      Maybe they didn’t know. AIDS was very taboo and scary back than. Her body was ravaged by the disease and her drug abuse so her family probably didn’t want her to be seen like that.

    • @cjking4511
      @cjking4511 8 месяцев назад +8

      I suspect her family kept it private. Gia's friend Francesco Scavullo "sent a Mass card when he heard the news." If her close friend did not know why would people in the fashion world know? Back then AIDS patients were sent to be buried or cremated rather immediately. People in the fashion industry would had to be invited to the funeral beforehand because the funeral took place in Philly not nyc and models like Gia were working out of nyc, la, and overseas a lot back then and even still currently are so attending a funeral could mean losing a modeling gig if not scheduled way in advance

      remember she became very famous years after her death, and at the time her situation was not uncommon among other people in fashion and modeling. There were a lot of people addicted to drugs, and not just models, photographers, magazine editors, make up artists, etc. Even Donatella Versace had a cocaine addiction, Gianni was HIV positive as well, so this time was a very dark time in the 80s. so unfortunately her death may not have been so impactful at the time, even though looking back it was a messed up situation.

      The fashion, music, movie industries are so.. ephemeral. The people who make up those industries are always focused on what’s coming up behind the current ‘thing of the moment’. They all know that anything else would be career suicide. Very empty, vapid way of thinking and of living. Sad. Heartbreaking, really.

      @@jessebacon817 You have an extremely valid point. People were terrified. I was a little kid back then, but I remember how frightened people were. I remember news stories where people who had the disease were spitting at police officers who were trying to arrest them. At that time, if you did a thing like that, you’d be put away for attempted murder 😳

I'm extremely lucky to have 13 months clean (today) because I know SO many people that didn't make it. The people around her strike me as fickle and opportunistic, people who are there to ride the wave of success with you but disappear during hardship. There is something in Gia's eyes that tells me she was aware of this, and this fact saddened her even more. She has some of the saddest most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. I think she knew the people she was surrounded by were fleeting..and that no one was truly there for her.

    • @jasminee671
      @jasminee671 8 лет назад +36

      +Cat Peach I would love if you could share more personal stories about her. I have a real affinity towards her. My words are not a sign of a lack of empathy for Gia. When someone is beautiful and they make a commentary about the difficulties of their beauty, a lot of people roll their eyes in disdain. Like really? how hard is it to be beautiful? The fact is that some people are not equipped to deal with the overt attention their beauty brings them. Gia had the outer shell of a top model with the soul of a playful little boy. she did not know how to overcome the endless stream of attention her looks brought her, and became lost in that whirlwind. She was not inherently selfish, she was not ungrateful, her soul simply didn't match her physicality. She was a lost child who never grew up..and who never had the unwavering support of anyone in her life. her mom used her, sandy used her, so many people used her. and she didn't have the tools to deal with the continuous attention but eventual rejection her beauty brought her.

    • @catpeach326
      @catpeach326 8 лет назад +33

      The book and movie about Gia was TRASH! Embellished on everything and didn't portray the Golden age of the modeling industry correctly. I was roommates with some of the people who helped make her. Tony V (fashion illustrator), Cohen Dee (hat designer), and Melino Stevens (Vogue Editor) were young and brilliant and considered the taste makers. And between Tony, Cohen and Melino, Gia became the IT girl overnight. Believe it or not, Gia was a model that was considered as "UGLY-beautiful". That sounds crazy given her beauty, but after decades of the same blonde hair, blue eyes, size zero, Cheryl Tiegs look, Gia's darker image was labeled Avant Garde, and not the typical ford model norm. She and the model named Esme who had the thick dark brows were praised for being "revolutionary" models. Her few shows (Perry Ellis) were funny in a sad way, she walked like truck driver lol. But she was on the cover of Vogue that season wearing Ellis (pink handknit sweater I think). Sadly most all are dead now (from AIDs and committing suicide), and the fashion world is a JOKE compared to what it used to be. Thanks to all the technology that exist, nowdays almost anybody can be famous with just a camera and some luck. In this moment of time people still had to have real raw talent, to make it big, with help of word of the mouth, back then celebrities like the Kardashians would NEVER be on the cover of Vogue, it would be considered an utter disgrace. Gia's last cosmopolitan photoshoot with Scavullo was sad, she looked TERRIBLE!!!! The HIV had already done a number, she looked like a walking corpse. Yeah, Gia was a mess. But she certainly wasn't the only one in that circle. Gia was just unlucky.

      @jasminee671 8 лет назад +22

      no need to call her that but yes, sandy if you read the comments please stop pretending that you didn't go there with Gia. It is an insult to everyone's intelligence and to the authentic nature of her story. its confusing for you to sit there and say you were never involved with her intimately because you were a "100 percent straight" then in another breath say you fell in love with her. she chose you when she could have had anyone in the world to call her lover. and it's not a coincidence that chose you. You are the embodiment of her mother in many ways-being ten years older than her, blonde, and tremendously selfish, narcissistic, and self-involved.

    I have read the book and seen the movie, and all all I can say is no one really knows what was going on inside Gia' s head. Don't condemn her for her mistakes because we weren't there to witness why they were made. She seemed to have it all, but did she really? I appreciate her for who she was, the good, the bad, the beauty, and the pain. In the end, I pray she found peace and the love and acceptance that she had been searching for. It has been almost thirty years since her death, yet people are still in awe of her. That, my friends, is a legacy.

      People only hype this chick up because of the Angelina Jolie movie and the fact that she died young. In her era, Gia was nowhere near as known as Christie Brinkley or Cheryl Tiegs and to pretend that a prime Cindy Crawford wasn’t on her level is downright comical. She was pretty yes, but FAR from the most beautiful model of all time. Everyone becomes mythical when they have an untimely death and a movie made about their life and Gia is no exception.

      You all need to stop with the sympathetic praise worshipping. You didn’t know anything about this woman like other models who probably led devastating lives. So trashing other models seems pretentious. She was stunningly beautiful when that makeup was put on. However, ppl only hyped her because of the movie decades ago. She was a troubled soul not an icon or legend. She’s a cautionary tale of being young and acquiring too much too soon esp when you’re emotionally unstable.

If you look at the photos of Gia and Janice Dickenson and other models you will see that Gia did not even have the typical model's body for that time because she was more voluptuous

    I remember seeing her on magazine covers in the supermarket back in the day. The first time I saw her, I thought she was Valerie Bertinelli all made up - and then realized it was someone else. Cindy Crawford said on MTV that her nickname was "LIttle Gia". If I remember, Gia's death wasn't reported on the news right away. It was one of those sad stories of someone who had achieved fame, disappeared, and then resurfaced as a cautionary tale.

    Being born and raised in Philly as Gia was and surrounded by drug abusers I see the pain of trying to express herself (although high) on her face. She had to be careful not to say certain things (especially what she really wanted to say) because she was already struggling to keep work due to her addiction. She needed help but they wanted her face even if it meant her life and the industry got what it wanted...obviously.

      I know right that part I was upset about. She work with very high end fashion designers. I also feel like the model industry chewed her up cause she was probably so vulnerable. And I felt like they replaced her with Cindy Crawford. You can tell Cindy became gia and it’s freaky how much they look alike. It was like the fashion world just erased her. All they cared about was getting the right shots for their magazines. Plus the modeling world was pretty cutthroat back then. They would give models pills so they don’t eat and so they can stay thin. It was a lot I’m sure they probably still do that today but back then it was different. If more people knew who Gia was they can see she was replaced by Cindy

    She doesn't have to be a procuct of her parents or the people who worked with her or her lovers. There isn't always someone to blame. She just took drugs, that lead to heroin and it gripped her sadly taking her life via HIV. There isn't always a"reason" for this kind of thing. Anyone could get addicted to drugs and (especially at this time where people were far less educted about the spreading of AIDS etc) catch HIV. I hope her story helps at least one person to straighten out their life.

      Actually at this time people didn't even know that HIV existed. They were just starting to see AIDS and it was rarely diagnosed before people were really sick. That's why it was killing people at epidemic proportions because there was no test and and no treatment and they barely knew anything about prevention either. We're starting to see more cases in younger people these days because education has dropped off. To the young people out there, please educate and protect yourselves. ❤

    Everyone who asks "Why didn't these people help her?" I mean, it's obvious she had a mental problem, and if you don't know what's like dealing with a person with mental illness and drug abuse, you don't know NOTHING ABOUT HOW HARD THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE ARE TO TREAT. Specially if the person doesn't want help, they'll always lie to you and the doctors. You can't trust, you can't do nothing if the person don't realize they need help. I say this 'cause I have borderline personality, my sister committed suicide and my mom is bipolar. You live in hell trying to help.

    I was at my lowest point last year and I saw Gia's spirit at the foot of my bed. I would think about her all the time and if she was at peace. I wouldn't stop researching about her and wouldn't leave it alone so that's why I think she appeared to me. It was the most calm experience I've had. I ALWAYS thought if I saw a ghost that I would have a heart attack but when I looked at her I just felt all peace and she didn't say anything but had some kind of telekinesis ability that told me to go back to sleep...so I did. I ran away to NJ last summer (I live in Ohio) and I went to my aunt's house right on the edge of philly, where Gia lived. I remember passing through Pennsylvania and just thinking that I was in Gia's state again! Her gravesite was about 20 minutes from where I was and I planned on stopping by before I hit the highway on my way back home. I totally forgot all about it and I was already like 30 minutes into my drive home. I started crying because I really wanted to see if I could see her gravesite and I FORGOT. I was all alone and the song "Pictures of you" by the cure was playing. I realized that she had already showed her self to me and that she was at peace and that I will always have the pictures of her and to remember the message she was trying to get across to me... just to leave it at rest and to know she is at peace with herself 💓
    I'll never ever forget this story and I wanted to just share it where I could to ease the sadness when it comes to Gia and how she went out. I promise all of you that I know what I saw and that Gia's spirit is at peace with herself 💗

    Fashion industry in that time wanted models to have that "fire" in their eyes - and they didn't care if it was caused by heroin.
    And after they had to stop that practice, it gave us only 10 years of "supermodel era"...Claudia Schiffer was the last one of them.
    After her - models started to die again - but this time the cause was anorexia.
    And despite all alerts regarding to that - models still look as hangers.
