"Britain’s Prisons Are FULL!” Why Prison Crisis Could See Dangerous Criminals Free To Walk Streets

  • British prisons are bursting at the seams - with overcrowding nearing breaking point - convicted criminals who should be off our streets could be on them instead.
This week former Met Detective Peter Bleksley is joined by Crime and Policing Commentator Danny Shaw, former Drug Smuggler and now Author Shaun Attwood and the London Victim’s Commissioner Claire Waxman, to discuss the numerous problems arising from the British prison crisis.
One proposal put forth by Justice Secretary Alex Chalk is to send convicted criminals who are sentenced to less than 12 months into the community instead of locking them up. This approach, known as community punishment, aims to provide offenders with opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society. However, this has raised concerns among victims of crime, who fear that offenders may pose a continued risk to their safety if they are not incarcerated.
The overcrowding crisis in UK prisons has been a long-standing issue, with the prison population steadily increasing over the past few decades. This has led to unsustainable conditions, with around 60% of prisoners held in overcrowded facilities. Overcrowding not only compromises the safety and well-being of prisoners, but also contributes to high rates of reoffending. Around 50% of prisoners on short sentences are reconvicted or cautioned within a year of their release.

@@run2cat4run So they turn up either illegally or on some sort of short term visa, (plus the ones who turned up "legally" under EU) do a crime, and the British taxpayer has to pay to keep them for however long their sentence is. How about sending them back to their country of origin to finish their sentences, and that would free up 10,500 places. If that can't be done, then get some sort of law and international agreement sorted, so it can be done.

Shaun’s eyes when you brought up his jail time was hilarious to observe
    Rehabilitation programs are needed
I know a young man who came out of prison and his family moved away they turned their back on him.
So he deliberately reoffended to go back to prison
They become institutionalised. Unable to rebuild their lives
Nobody should be jailed for weed
Shaun’s input on drug crime is right

    Deport dangerous foreign criminals
Find alternatives to prison sentences for low level crimes
Drive rehabilitation outside of prisons, create jobs and encourage businesses to employee ex criminals through offering lower tax rates etc
Community service should be more skills orientated, building work etc eg offer cscs cards
There is loads you can change but its not a priority for the current government
