    This interview was life changing for me. I’ve never really considered how I viewed the incarcerated before then. I’ve never had a strictly negative or dehumanizing perspective on them, although I think a lot of people do, but I never really made the effort to try and understand them. That understanding now makes my world a little fuller, and I’m now completely invested in the fight for humane rehabilitation! This is a great step forward

      This is slave labor. They’re getting paid almost nothing for risking their lives, and they only do it in order to be outside the jail and because any money is better than nothing. The worst part is that they won’t even be able to use this experience because ex-cons barely ever get hired as firefighters. This exploitation of inmates by corporations needs to end.

The color of their hats represent what group of the prison population they come from I think. The guys in the red hats was imprisoned as youth offenders as far as I understood, and they hadn't had access to a shower in 4 days because their only shower had been taken from them by the civilian wildfire fighters who didn't want to share it with inmates or something. Luckily people from the Coachella Festival donated mobile showers to them so I think they got to take a shower that night, but the guy that spoke about it was scared of being kicked off the program for saying something.

      My Ex was in this fire camp about 10yrs ago. People should defiantly not feel bad for them. It’s WAY better in the fire camp than prison. They get open air visits for 1-2 hours. And you can bring them whatever food they like. They are actually doing something constructive with their time. My ex told me that they got fed steak and lobster when they would be out on fires. Also my cousins wife was in a non prison related fire program at the same place. (Not same time as my ex). And she said the prisoners were treated better and got more freedom then they did. These guys aren’t angels, and they probably did people really dirty to get there. It’s a good thing they are serving society. Because reality is, when they get out, they might not do more crimes. Natural disasters always force people together. After it is over, people go back to fighting each other again, sadly.

    • @rickeykoga2312
      @rickeykoga2312 14 дней назад

      Yup. It's almost like COVID was our big chance as humans to come together to support each other but it fractured us even worse.
      I truly believe those who follow anything like politics or religion or celebrities are being manipulated by corporations and foreign hackers/bots. In 2016, we went to war online and never looked back. What happened was Russian/Iranian bots sparked online chaos very subtly and made us think our neighbors are our enemy. Small nudges and incendiary comments that set bad examples and give people toxic rhetoric. I'm not involved in social media much and I watched it all spiral downhill clear as day. I worry for our society because it seems we are crumbling as a species and we destroyed our home planet.
      We are swirling the cosmic drain.

    This program has been around for decades. I remember when a lot of inmates from the sierra conservation center came to copperopolis to fight a major fire up there. They were using tractors and bulldozers to make a fire line and putting out flames and so on. I went down to the fire line and gave them all a bunch of cold water bottles cause it was really hot that summer but they were some of the nicest people ive ever come across and am thankful for how hard they worked to save houses like mine.

    Thank you for covering this with information and education on the program. Much appreciated.
    I'm not too familiar with rehabilitation programs, but from what I understand it's a very positive thing (for everyone). Glad it's helping them, those affected by these wildfires, and communities overall.
    Some people want to continue their ill-intention trends in prison, and some do not. Based on the one interview with one of the inmate firefighters, it seems to be helpful in that manner. Those who want to change for the better get that opportunity, and those who want to stay in their ways stay imprisoned (and these firefighter inmstes can get away from it and can do great things).

    Inmate crews are contributing, that is something I am Thankful for. Their pay may not equate to the normal cost of living, although they have received training, continue to make progress. Perhaps 🤔 a day will come and any “pay raise” should be given to them upon their release (to help their families or pending shelter). Fire retardant sleeping bags could be helpful. Ty for this program for inmate, I have always applauded these programs. There is a compound about 30 minutes on hills by our home, and I love having them there
