Healing music - Shostakovich - Piano concerto 2 - Andante

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) composed and published this piano concerto in 1957. It was written for his son, who performed it during his graduation from the Moscow conservatory. Although the concertos have never ranked among Shostakovich' more "important" works, this piano concerto nevertheless remains popular. The middle "Andante" movement has a very romantic, melancholy feel and is full of consolation.
This subtle and heartfelt performance is by John Ogdon (1937-1989), accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic orchestra, conducted by Lawrence Foster.
