@Owen Yusuf i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
There is nothing preventing it from working sofar in 5e Ravenloft, although it should be noted that it works a little different in general in 5th ed. It no longer detects evil, rather it detects the presence of nearby undead, fiends and celestials.

The mummy lord asks the PCs if they seek to learn the mysteries of the cult's teachings.
Minor tetch on the Death's head tree; the floaty heads are not undead, as I recall; they're still all plant matter.

Not really important, but the Deadlands setting has the Boneless, too. 2 minions from one corpse. Cost effective.

Does a paladins detect ability work in the newer editions? It used to be that the background evil of Ravenloft ruined that ability

Boneless are nasty! They creep players out!
Ive had great fun describing in detail some of their movements and the sound they make as they move about.

Yeah, I find most things that regurgitate maggots tends to wig the players out.
