Chitragupta Temple...Khajuraho series (11)

Chitragupta Temple dedicated to Sun God was built during the 1023 AD by the Chandela Rulers, is the only Sun temple at Khajuraho. Chitragupta temple faces East, and the inner sanctum contains a 5-foot-tall image of (Sun) Lord Surya, driving in a chariot of seven horses. The lintel of the intricate doorway portrays three small figures of Lord Surya as depicted in the main sanctum. This temple closely resembles the Devi Jagadambi temple. The external walls are beautifully carved. It depicts voluptuous and full figured sura-sundaris, erotic couples, image of lord Vishnu in the eleven headed forms and the sculptures of hunting, dance performances, royal processions and elephant fighting. Apart from this, the temple also houses a three-storeyed stepped tank, which is another prominent attraction. Popularly known as Chopra tank.
