Daelin Proudmore innovations improve our quality of life on earth. My own philosophical view is that any progress made in the pursuit of eliminating suffering or improving happiness in the one life we know for sure we have is a necessary pursuit. If we took the mindset that eternity is around the corner, no one would innovate anything because what would be the point? A Christian can still innovate, but they’ll always have strings pulling them down compared to Musk, Jobs, Tesla, and other freed up thinkers
@@chayblay “but they’ll always have strings pulling them down” And what are those strings exactly? Need I remind you that some of most influential scientists of all time have been Christians and theists? Most Nobel prize winners have actually affiliated with Christianity. It’s a common talking point among atheists. “We won’t say it explicitly, but Christians are basically intellectually inferior to us “free thinkers” Whatever that means
Thiel promotes the scarcity theory of poverty, and Wright rightly points out that the only scarcity involved in global poverty is a scarcity of goodwill and fairness.
David Walsh No, simply not everyone can have what everyone wants, is that so hard to understand? There just isn't enough to go around for the various uses of each good and service.
JustAManFromThePast The myth of scarcity again. As I wrote, it is a false theory promoted by an economics of greed. Buy into it if you want. But I dont.
***** So you agree with my point; global poverty is not a scarcity issue? Are you aware of the effects of Western governments and corporations on Africa?
***** So we shouldn't have governments? Any African leader that tries to develop their people and economy independently will be unseated. Western corporations want Africa weak and disorganised so they can exploit their resources. The Washington regime and Pentagon etc enforces the corporate vision as 'national interests'. Just look at a map of US military forces in Africa and globally. Thiel is part of that system of exploitation.
I find that the Golden Rule kicks in very easily here. Can you imagine wishing people who could afford cable and cars had donated more to fight Alzeimer's before you needed an intervention? It's even easier to be proactive if you realize a portion of your loved ones are at serious risk. You *will* want effective interventions to be off-patent asap. Donations speed that process
The early church fathers widely held that death was a mercy imposed by God to keep us from immortalizing sin. I'm with Wright that we ought to do what we can to keep people healthy, but that extending this life forever is not the ultimate goal.
Portrayals of the future are dystopian because it makes a good story. If technology created a beautiful future where would be the interest? Every story needs conflict.
I am not going to die! For I will be living when the King and High Priest Son of God comes to judge the living and the dead. That Son of God will rule with an iron rod from Mount Zion. Read please Revelation chapter 21 and know the tent of God will be with mankind and death will be no more etc.. In that day those who are redeemed will as N.T. Wright is saying when they come to perfection will take of the fruit from the tree of life and will live forever as Sons and daughters of God the Almighty. And that day is imminent for Revelation 16:14-16; Psalms 2:1-7. This is the situation today the kings of the earth have massed together for the war of the great day of God the Almighty at the place that is called in Hebrew Har-Mageddon. As Matthew 24:22 God will intervene on behalf of his chosen ones before no flesh is saved. If WW3 that is in motion today was not stopped by intervention by God the Almighty there would be no survivors. The whole earth is living in great danger in this day. God's kingdom is imminent the ruling elites will not be ruling unless they are righteously judged by the Son of God.
Does anyone really take Wright serious? Can anyone point to where he really adds to the conversation? Unfortunately, seems like the average Bible thumper. A great deal of fear shaded by the vail of religion. Not pointing fingers, I used to share this. But this must be overcome in modernity. Anything less than what we are capable of is not a sustainable path foward at this point in history. Thiel is excercising patience and being conservative it seems. What did Thiel really gain from sitting down for an event like this besides pr and maybe ego stroking. Am I way off?
The sheer ignorance of your post is astounding. Wright is an "average Bible thumper?" He is considered the world's leading scholar on the Bible! In what way does he resemble anything remotely average? Even secular Biblical scholars recognize that he is an exceptional figure in the arena of theology. Much of Wright's interpretation of scripture is actually different from traditional, Western Christianity. What fear are you suggesting?
Depends on what your ultimate authority is in life...if your ultimate authority is subjective human reasoning...your stuck with everyone's opinion being equally valuable and the point of even having a discussion like this is pointless....if your ultimate authority is the Bible (thumped or not) and believe God inspired human authors to express how we should live and act....then your going to have an objective view from the God that gives you every breath...
Peter Thiel giving his deepest affirmation of someone else's opinions, "I don't disagree with that."

Really wish Peter got a chance to answer the question at 1:08:00 of what's the point of being a Christian when so many innovators aren't Christian

The early Church fathers were running a Nigerian Prince scam, just like the modern Church fathers. ;-)
Thiel doesn’t talk about immortality.
@@josephmelton4721 That's true. Peter Thiel is mostly caught up in his infinite love of Peter Thiel. ;-)
Did Wright use the word innuendo as opposite of crescendo? I thought innuendo meant something completely different.
He's saying 'diminuendo'.
Gerco Wolfswinkel and really should’ve said “decrescendo”

Tom Wright is one of the foremost theolgians, cultural philosphers, and ancient historians in the world.
