I think Krennic being killed by his own creation at the hands of his 'work rival' is better than Jyn killing him out of revenge

I liked that Jyn didn't kill Krennic...because we all expected her too. Having another person save her...then they still fucking die? Great.
I'll bet for a second people thought, "hey, They'll make it and become Rey's parents!" Annnd no. Heh.

Honestly, I never expected it to connect to Force Awakens. IT SHOULDN'T. The minute you make the standalone films essential to understanding the saga films, you ruin the point of them being stand ALONE. Now the saga films can be essential to understanding the stand alones, but not the other way around

    • @baseballlover312
      @baseballlover312 8 лет назад +19

I disagree. If you are going to make a backstory film about the Death Star, the face of the death star needs to be in it. perhaps less direct on shots, but he needed his role. And giving Vader his role, when he doesn't even believe in the super weapon, would make no sense. Hell, he would have less of a cameo in this than Episode 3, which would make no sense.

Totally agree this Hellogreedo I feel like went into this movie with set expectations and was disappointed when events and situations didn't happen his way instead of just accepting the direction they took. Especially with it being a spinoff movie, anything was fair game in a way

You shouldn't need to read a book to understand the movie. If you can't have Tarkin look good or have a meaningful role to play, then don't have him in the movie.

I enjoyed Rogue One much more on my second viewing. The first time i felt that the opening scenes were messy and the movie was moving too slowly until the last hour. the tone was overly dour, and the characters weren't fleshed out enough. I still really liked it, but i wasn't as satisfied as say, the first time i watched Force Awakens.
But the second time, knowing how it would all end, i found myself being much more appreciative of the risks the filmmakers took. They wanted to make a war-based, grittier, more melodramatic and subdued movie, with different depictions of the Rebels and the Empire, in addition to still having to world build and set up everything, and they executed it well. I also found myself enjoying the characters much more, since i knew they were actually all going to die in the end. They succeeded in making every character just likeable enough for me to care when they died, in only two hours. With this movie i felt the characters shined in this movie more through what they were doing, over who they actually were. In the end they're not Luke, Han, Leia, Obi-Wan, Anakin or even Rey or Finn, they're all just soldiers, and I'm glad no one had any plot armor just because they're a main character.
And setting all that aside, it still had a phenomenal final act with a great space battle and added context to ANH, well-done fanservice, and *that* Vader scene. Even the CGI characters didnt bother me as much since i saw it coming.
Overall i enjoyed it much more the second time, unlike TFA, which while i still really like, didnt hold up nearly as well the second time. I feel like this movie will be much more revered in a few years time because they attempted to do something different with Star Wars.

BattleUp Saber TFA was horrible in my opinion, no space battles (Rogue One check), no interesting dialogue and acting (Rogue One check), Storm troopers can't hit a barn (Rogue One check), Story that makes sense (Rogue One check), Story that goes somewhere (Rogue One check) ( TFA missed the next chapter after ROTJ Luke's jedi academy! and now you can't go back unless everyone is CGI).

Alec By 2020 NO ONE will be able to tell the difference between CGI and reality I 100% guarantee it. You can only barely tell that Tarkin and Liea are not real because you know how old they are. If they were brand new characters you would almost not know at all.
by 2045 no one will be able to tell the difference between humans and machines

    • @DarthFolo
      @DarthFolo 8 лет назад +3

As long as it's a human character you'll immediately know if it's real or not. Our brains have evolved to recognize faces, you can't just hide that with CGI.
Non-human characters are fine, but we're a long ways off from humans.
I didn't mind it in Rogue One though, even though I knew I think it was worth it.

I totally agree with you. That CGI was great and I was really happy when I saw them. The only thing that made me notice the CGI (next to the clear "the actor is dead/old") was that it had a higher fps than the humans. But still it was awesome :)

People like Star Wars for different reasons. It's a versatile saga. Some people like the action, or the characters, or the space battles, or the puppets and miniatures, or the CGI. Some people like swinging across a chasm with a princess. Personally, this gritty, war movie take on Star Wars, personally it wasn't for me. I love The Force Awakens, I love the characters, the story, some people hate it, whatever. It's all good everybody.

I think that this is a film that would be improved vastly with a director's cut.
Add another 15 to 20 minutes to the film to explain/explore:
    1. Jyn's relationship with Saw
    2. Galen's relationship with Krennic
    3. The crew of Rouge One. Not necessarily backstory, but more scenes of them interacting/developing comradery

It's ridiculous that people think you hate a movie just because you think it has problems. All the movies have problems. Even Empire. Rogue One for me is like Return of the Jedi - it's solid and ultimately very satisfying, with some awesome moments, but the way it's assembled as a film leaves something to be desired, and the script is a bit sloppy. But that said, it's still an enjoyable Star Wars movie! We're getting one a year, they're not all gonna be ESB quality! This internet mentality where everything is either a 10/10 or a 1/10 needs to stop. It's basically equivalent to Anakin saying "if you're not with me, then you're my enemy."

just like the people who find even the most tiny little flaw that the force awakens has, and they said that is the worst thing ever just because of that flaw. its like they don't look at good movies, they just look at perfection. tfa is not that awfull as everybody says and r1 is not that great as everybody says. they are both good movies with cons and pros. if you want to see a really good movie go and watch movies like terminator 2, apocalipsys now, or the godfather, if you want to see a really bad movie go and watch twilight, jack & jill and the last airbender

TJ Hastie I think its more then just "you either love or hate it". He claims he "likes" the movie but has spent most of his 27 combined minutes of two reviews talking only of what he disliked. Like roughly 21 of 27. Someone who likes s film spends more time on what they enjoyed then so much on the negative.

is there anyone who remembers the names from the characters in the movie "saving private Ryan"? I dont.^^
The reason why all know the names from Episode 7 is:
    1. they were all promoted very strong. even before the movie came out we knew every name.
    2. The names were easier to learn. BB-8 is easier then K2....or what ever his full name was ^^
    3. they using the names more often in Episode 7, in Rogue One not that much.
The thing is, Rogue One is just one movie, one little Story, while Episode 7 is part of a Trilogy. they have more time for the characters.

      TFA is like a 5/10
      R1 is a 7/10
Because it's not part of a trilogy and gets to tell it's whole story at once without witholding information and going "wait for the next movie". I also loved the intensity of the battles in R1, and that space battle at the end is easily my favorite of the entire franchise. There's this war movie feel to it, and for some reason looking at the Star Wars universe that way really intrigued me. TFA just feels bleh to me.

How fleshed out are Han Solo and Lando in their first films compared to Donnie Yens character? Didnt we see some nice progression from his introduction until his death? Did we really need his backstory? How would that have affected the pacing? I felt like Jyn and Cassian had a pretty good connection, and growth in the film. What more did we need to see between them?

bushwick Solo has a complete character arc in New Hope. Do you really think the Han we meet at the beginning of the film would have gone back to save Luke? He only comes back at the end because he has grown as a person.
Lando is a side character and even he changes a fair bit, he learns to stand up against the empire, joining the rebels at the end of episode v, which, again, the Lando we first meet wouldn't do.
Lando didn't even have all of episode v to develop, he had only half the movie or less.

Jason Fenton yes but what do we know about them? not much at all, han was a smuggler working for jabba who shot first asked later and in it for the money, that's it, lando was his friend and controlled bespin.

I believe Krennic's death was perfect. At first I thought Vader would kill him for not doing his job. But no. That would have been lazy and predictable. I feel the same about Jyn killing him. Instead, he was killed by the Death Star. Not even the shock wave, the laser hit the top of the tower, right where he was. He choked on his aspirations. It just, worked best, in my opinion.

And btw i loved all of it even the middle. It was great. And im not saying that just because its sw its just awesome. Im sad that some dont agree with me, but i think its the best star wars film yet.

Eemeli Kuusela mostly because the characters didn't resonate with me. Force Awakens has better character development. Plus, I grew up with the original trilogy. So the returning characters struck a cord. And I know that it's a remake of A New Hope but to me it is a refined version of A New Hope. I actually like it better than A New Hope.

I liked how after the Death Troopers killed the engineers and Krennic smacks Galen down and Galen tells him "You'll never win" and Krennic asks him "Now where have I heard that before?" • @adam145
    @adam145 8 лет назад +4

Unlike TFA, Rogue One holds up on second viewing. It feels like I already knew everything I needed to know when Force Awakens started a second time, but in R1 I went in wanting to get as many details as I could, anticipating that I missed something. As you said with the Labor Camp, there's so much more in this movie that I would like to be expanded upon, it would take another movie to cover it all. It's funny because I saw Jakku for the first time and I'm like "yeah, that's a desert planet, move on". After that Maz's castle and a forest "cool, an old castle and trees" and in the end, Hoth with Death Star in it.
Here I want to see more of the Jedha - its streets and the Kyber Temple. I felt like Eadu could use more screen time too. It had a base which probably could have some cool interiors, and the shuttle depot could be the first time we see a large imperial landing platform filled with ships.
TFA hit with nostalgia, but R1 hits with familiar theme filled to brim with new stuff that you want to see and explore.

I loved Rogue One. The first 20 or so minutes was has a bit choppy editing, and the first hour was a bit slow but I didn't mind it as it was building up to an awesome, satisfying, final hour.
I do prefer this to The Force Awakens, I just related to the characters more in Rogue One, these felt like real people and real people that I know. I related to Bodhi and Cassian a lot more than I did to Rey, Finn or Poe. K-2SO felt like that funny guy that always cracks jokes and makes me laugh, Chirrut felt like my overly-religious friend who has complete faith in his beliefs and follows them to be the best person he can, Baze felt my athiest friend who always makes fun of my other friends beliefs but still has some faith himself, etc. I felt connected to these characters more than I have any other Star Wars characters, and for that there was more connection to the movie and the mission, and more emotional impact when they each bit-the-dust. Not to mention, Rogue One actually has a original storyline which is more than what TFA can do which instantly gives it a point in my book.
And for those reasons, and many others, this is now I would rank Rogue One with the other films:
    1# Empire Strikes Back (10/10)
    2# Rogue One (9/10)

You know, it kind of feels like you're basing Tarkin's role on a special effect rather than his place in the story. If Tarkin was an actor with heavy makeup to make him look more like Peter Cushing, would you have the same complaints about Tarkin being in this movie?

    - SPOILERS BELOW -
I think what really stood out to me with Rogue one was just how damn dark the movie was. Before viewing, I had an idea that a good chunk of people would die and maybe even all of them.
But At that final part at Scariff, with the Rebels scrambling is when it began. At that moment, the lead heroes knew their fate and knew they were going to die. Especially the final two, Felicity and Diego's Characters. Like it was the rapture, and you see the explosion from behind and it slowly incoming while they hold hands and hug, preparing for death. And top top it off, they revived Darth's badass quality.
I do feel they missed out on characterizing and emphasizing on these characters. Most felt relativity dull. And the beginning felt like it was jumping around a lot, like with that random truth-octopus.
Despite these flaws I still feel it was an awesome movie. I agree that it wasn't anything spectacular, or better than TFA. But I do feel like it succeeds beyond the prequels however doesn't top any of the originals. 8/10

A lot of people say that I’m a loser for this, but my least favorite Star Wars movie is Rogue One. I mean, if you can even really call it a Star Wars movie. Here are my reasons:
    1. They had Forrest Whitaker, and Saw Gerrera is one of the most important characters, but he only has 10 minutes of screen time.
    2. Tarkin really makes me uneasy. The CGI really is off feeling, and I feel like bringing an actor back from the dead is, in my opinion, completely unethical.
    3. The story bounced around different places, each place getting so little screen time. They could have explored Wobani, Jedha, Yavin, and Scarif, but it was like they said, “Okay, we’re here! Onto the next place.”
    4. I hated the cheap nostalgia and cameos in there. “Hey! There’s Ponda Baba and Dr Evazan! They were in A New Hope!” “Guardians of the Whills! Cool, I read that book!” “Squadrons reporting in! They did that in the original movies!” “Bail Organa! He was in the prequels!”
The movie itself was really just a fanboy pleaser cash grab, and really did nothing to push the story of Star Wars forward in really any way.

  • @noahfortner2

Honestly making a Death Star movie without Tarkin is like making a Clone Wars movie without any clones. You gotta have it. It's so integral to what it is. And that's not just because of Catalyst. That's the canon. Tarkin's involvement with the station needs to be seen in a film this close to A New Hope. You don't wanna watch this and then see Episode IV introduce Tarkin's involvement with the Death Star there.
His involvement in Rogue One also made Krennic's role make more sense. The political drama between them-Krennic wanting to be credited for the station, but Tarkin knowing he has the power to take it over-was great and led into ANH perfectly.
Did Tarkin *have* to be CGI? That's where I won't argue. If you didn't like it, hey fair enough. I thought it was brilliant despite not looking totally real. It honestly would have been more jarring for me if he had been portrayed by a different actor since these films are neck-and-neck in the timeline, but to each his own.
There's my little Tarkin rant lol

meh to me tarkin was like legolas or galandriel in the hobbit film, out side the fact that they were alive in that time, they both had no reason to be in the story. you don't need to read the book to understand this

I feel like Krennick's demise is better if it's at the hands of his own weapon rather than by revenge. The latter is just too expected and not as satisfying as one would think. The utter humiliation that comes with Krennick being killed by his own people, consciously, is way more satisfying.

***** The reason TPM is my least favourite is because I can't stand Jar Jar and child Anakin, the only part I like is the final fight with Maul. Also, do you really think R2 and 3PO in the desert drags? It's not really that long before they meet Luke.

    • @simonnaylor3536
      @simonnaylor3536 8 лет назад

Ross T I my opinion, R2 and 3-po in the desert is one of the most realistic parts of all Star Wars, even if it drags. It really creates the feeling of being lost on an alien planet and makes you sense how far away from everything they are. The music is really fantastic and quite unique in the Star Wars films. I think the prequels and newer films do not set up new planets and locations as Tatooine and the rest of the original trilogy, and also the first Ewoks film did. Most films make things happen to fast and don't set the scenes well enough, in my opinion.

Empire has the best acting and character development in Star Wars. However, Empire has a small, very limited plot where not much of any gravitas happens versus Vader's reveal and Han's kidnapping. To me it's not enough which is why the huge serving of plot in Episode III makes that one my favorite of all.

I feel like you conveyed your opinions way better in this video, helped me understand your opinion on the movie. I want to go see it a second time myself, but from my first viewing I adored it.
I still feel like Tarkin had a place though. If he was the "big bad" of ANH, then he needed to be the big bad in the store that takes place literal days prior. As the head of the Death Star in ANH, I feel like it would be too difficult to write him out of this film where, once again, the Death Star is a main plot point. I feel like the CGI was great, and while I CAN'T be convinced that Peter Cushing was really there because I KNOW he wasn't, it was solid. Leia though? I agree with the "should have just been a profile shot". Would have been more powerful in my opinion, and less obvious it was CGI. I still respect your opinion though, I can see how it's jarring to some.
Great video Greedo, love the opening!

I don't think it's so much about people blindly loving rogue one, it's more about people liking rogue one much more than force awakens. I remember seeing so much criticism for force awakens when it came out because it was pretty much a soft reboot, but rogue one has either had like warm receptions or very very good ones, the people who said force awakens sucked are saying they loved rogue one. I noticed this while I was watching rogue one, I laughed much more at rogue ones funny moments than force awakens, all those laughs weren't forced but involuntary, and at the end I clapped, again it was like I wanted to clap, where for the force awakens I felt like I had to clap cuz everyone else did. Since watching rogue one I've been noticing the problems with force awakens more and more, and while I don't hate force awakens, the film did and DOES have more problems than rogue one.

6:41 Well, that's where you'd be wrong bucko. That's how the new canon works. The movies can't mess with the books, and the books can't mess with the movies. They all have to align with each other because they're all equally canon. You'd know that if you READ AND REVIEWED THE STUFF. Tons of us have only been asking for like the past 100 videos if you could read the new stuff and give us your thoughts on it, or watch Rebels or even The Clone Wars finally. You would actually like the new stories. You said you would read Catalyst after you watched Rogue One, but I doubt that's happening. Especially after your opinion of the movie. Having the Death Star without Tarkin is like having a Captain America movie without the shield. It's not right. I'm sorry that so many seem to not realize this for some reason and have no idea who or what Tarkin is despite watching A New Hope. Come on guys.

So they just made a prequel to Episode 4 and that gave them a perfect excuse to include loads of unnecessary shit such as AT ATs, AT STs, Death Troopers, Clone Turbo Tanks, Doctor Evazan and Pondo Baba.
