    I miss living in Duluth. It’s been 10 years since I was in college, but this city still calls to me. It’s the siren song of my soul. The intensity of the weather, the raw beauty of the land around us, the people. It is home.

    I'm like you. When most people want to stay indoors, I want to go out in it. Great to see.
    What direction was the wind coming from? Must have been East, but that's unusual for Michigan/Minn.
    One thing- those aren't 50 ft waves. They're 15-20 ft waves with spray (spectacularly) reaching 50 ft when hitting the rocks.

      Yes. Hit by 3 big waves in succession. As reported by the Arthur Anderson who was in the vicinity and was hit by same 3 waves.
      The Fitzgerald was overweight from what I've read. And had a captain from Toledo Ohio, and at least one of the deckhands was from Toledo and he started to someone he didn't want to be on that boat because the captain would go through any storm like it was nothing.
      So back then I guess they got paid more for getting overweight. And it's not like trucking where they have to deal with tickets at weigh stations.
      So that stupidly fearless captain got over loaded and took the boat into a storm.
      Just saying what I've read.
      Now days, they don't run in those months and dock the boats.

    Could you even imagine it? Being out there and your ship gets ripped in half. You’re on a “lifeboat” getting constantly battered by waves in these freezing conditions. No wonder people don’t survive shipwrecks on these waters. They just freeze to death while being constantly battered by wind and waves. As a native Michigander it really strikes a cord with me. Rip to the mariners who sacrificed their life on these waters.

      the spray from the waves hitting the cliffs might be 50' but not the actual wave itself. there is not enough fetch on that lake nor wind to blow hard enough

    • @drforjc
      @drforjc Год назад

      @@xisotopex Yes, wave height is measured bottom of trough to top of crest. These are no where near that. If you google highest wave height ever recorded on Lake Superior you will get results of about 28 - 29 feet.

    I love Tettagouche when the lake is angry:-). That would be a sort of treacherous drive in some spots. That hill going down into Duluth would be one place, and then there are some hills on 61 too that would be harry in the snow/ice. The old road would have been a LOT worse when it was actually closer to the lake in spots. Did you make it to Split Rock at all?

      These are splashing above 50' foot cliffs. So he's calling them "50' waves" and although that's *_scientifically_* incorrect. He's not exactly wrong either. They are splashing over 50'. They're just not measuring 50' from trough to crest.
