His View Of Separate But Equal May Shock You

  • As many of you know who have been following my video posts, I recorded hundreds of interviews in 1989 for a television project. This gentleman from Farmville Virginia is speaking specifically about the experiences he encountered there, around the time of Brown versus Board of Education, integrating school systems. Prince Edward County, his County, chose to close the public schools for five years rather than integrate. He was a schoolteacher and proud of it. Shocked by what occurred. Not certain that he was completely in favor of integration as it was being experienced by him and others in Virginia at that time. I appreciated his honesty and his clarity. He was not a civil rights activist but he thoroughly believed in the power and value of education to elevate people and give them opportunities.

    I remember reading a book called “Code talkers” about the Navajo people who were used for their language that couldn’t be translated by the enemy. He included that when he came home, he went to a bar, and a sign said “we don’t serve Indians”
    To which he replied, I don’t want an Indian, I want a coke. It was a good book and a good eye opener.

    In 2010 in NYC, my children attended 2 different middle schools. One middle school was predominantly Latinx students, followed by Black students, with very few White students. The students were given handouts of photocopied pages from textbooks and worksheets for every class. This was true even for classes which were expected to prepare students to take state-wide Regents exams. When I asked why, the teachers said they did not have enough for the students. Two teachers said that they would give my child a textbook, "since you asked." The other middle school was predominantly White students, followed by Latinx and Black and Asian. Each student received a textbook for each class. Many classes had extra textbooks for the students to use in the school. In spite of my and my husband's efforts and involvement, this had a detrimental impact on my child in the school without textbooks.

    This is very interesting and thought provoking. The things he’s saying are things I’ve never heard before or considered in the discussions happening right now. This was indeed very enlightening, but it doesn’t solve the issue of what is in people’s hearts. People must change themselves, and how they view and treat other people.

    Thankful for these videos. I am learning so much and I'm sad I can't ask my dad most of this. He is still living and will be 80 next year but grew up in Williamsburg and my aunt currently lives in Farmville. So much injustice and my dad is scarred, he can't talk about what he went through. My mother is from North Carolina and 11 years younger than him and shared some of her growing up when the schools became intergrated. Its hard to hear, but how else can we learn not to repeat the mistakes made in our past?

    I had a teacher in college who lived during the time when students were bused great distances to force integration. He commented that it was not necessarily a good idea for black children because they were forced to attend classes with white students and white teachers. Black children were subject to ridicule and degradation by their classmates. White teachers could not relate to nor understand black pupils. He argued that black students were much better off having black teachers who understood them, their needs, their experiences, and could give them better learning and personal development opportunities than their white counterparts. He said the same things mentioned in this video. Separate but equal would have worked if it had been equal.

    • @jefflewis4
      @jefflewis4 4 года назад +6

      Separate but equal would not have worked.
      That was the whole point of the Brown vs Board case.The findings were that the white and Black schools in Topeka at the time were about equal in buildings, curriculum, teacher, qualifications and salaries. The impact of segregation as as much as psychological as it is physical.
      The only thing that really drives the desire to have separate facilities by race is the view that one race is superior to the other. That doesn't change because you make everything else equal. It still makes the whites students feel superior and the Black students feel inferior.

    • @jusletursoulglobaby
      @jusletursoulglobaby 4 года назад +2

      @able street there WERE very much "equal" accommodations but it was a rarity. there were pockets of the country that has very high achieving standards where graduates went on to have those desired professional positions. the pipeline to HBCUS in the south, particularly in Florida was very strong. the black community as segregated as it was in many of these areas were unique tho.
      Derrick Bell wrote about Brown v Board in Silent Covenants. fascinating read. unpacks and debunks many of the central arguments of the ruling. also identifies the REAL issue of separate but equal

    • @gewurztramina
      @gewurztramina 4 года назад +9

      @jefflewis4 Well said, I agree. Even if it had been possible to do “separate and equal”, there’s no justification for being separate, except to show one as superior to the other.

    • @jefflewis4
      @jefflewis4 4 года назад +2

      @able street I'm not wrong. I can only suggest you re-read the case because its in there clear as day. Its in the very first footnote of the opinion. The Kansas District Court determined the separate black and white schools in Topeka were equal. The NAACP lost that case on that basis, and they appealed to the Supreme Court from that decision. You'll see no disagreement with this in the Brown Supreme Court decision. The Supreme Court just said it doesn't matter if the separate schools are equal, its the separation itself that was un-equal.

We had a black president elected by the American people for TWO TERMS. Many black people have become INCREDIBLY successful. Black people have the EXACT SAME RIGHTS as every other race in the United States. So, again, I ask, please explain what you mean by that we have a lot of work to do.

      @S. W. Sonny You are right. Cops cannot get away with abusing white people. Also, you forgot, black people. More importantly, ALL people.
      I never dayis the majority of black people are well off and successful. Is that the case with white people? No. So what's your point?
      The disrespect President Obama got? Are you high? He had the media in his pocket the entire time. The media were his best friend and were ALWAYS in his corner. I DO remember the amount of not just disrespect but also the amount of pure hatred President Bush received. Him and his entire family. That was disgusting. President Trump has been attacked from the day he came down that escalator. The Democrats were talking about impeaching him before he ever took office. He has been berated and attacked since he decided to run for President. But that's okay with you right?
      And if there was systemic racism, how do you explain how ANY black person becomes successful? If the system is racist, then that should never happen but it does. Explain that.

      Linda Here are a few examples of how American institutions continue to uphold racism and prejudice: redlining still disproportionately effects Black Americans, resumes with “Black” sounding names are less likely to be called for an interviews than white potential hirees with the same qualifications, BIPOC are disproportionately incarcerated (research the school to prison pipeline), intentional over policing in Black majority communities, police kill Black people at a higher rate than white people, and Black women are more likely to die during child birth than white women. We still have a lot of work to do to make our country an equal and fair place for all.

    In the North there were integrated schools. We knew that it wasn't all the South thought it was. The Supreme Court's ruling in Brown v The Board of Education was based on the fact that schools hadn't been equally funded as per Plessy v Ferguson ruling. The Court's ruling wasn't in promotion of integration. The NAACP made it about integration as they wouldn't take the case if it wasn't.

    • @jefflewis4
      @jefflewis4 4 года назад +1

      E Walker@ It wasn't based on unequal funding. There had already been lower court rulings that dealt with that and directed the towns that did not provide equal facilities to do so. Read the findings of the appealed District case (Judge Huxman) The Topeka schools were seen as having equal facilities and teachers. The Supreme Court case answered the question are the students equal if they are separated by race even if all the 'tangible' factors are equal. The answer came back no. Even if the schools are equal, segregation by race is inherently un-equal.

    • @ewalker1057
      @ewalker1057 4 года назад +2

      @@jefflewis4 No. The original plaintiffs wanted equal funding. They as most Black people wanted Plessy v Ferguson enforced. It was the NAACP that made it about integration. They refused to take the case unless it was. Brown v The Board of Education was not their first case, their first try. The Supreme Court decision was based on these schools failing to abide by Plessy v Ferguson. Since they did not make schools equal for Black children, then Black children would be allowed to attend the better schools created for white children.

    • @jefflewis4
      @jefflewis4 4 года назад +1

      @@ewalker1057 It was no longer about unequal funding or facilities when the Brown case went to the US Supreme Court.
      It was already settled in the in the Kansas District court the schools in Topeka were equal.
      Its stated as such in the very first footnote in the Brown opinion.
      "...that the Negro and white schools were substantially equal with respect to buildings, transportation, curricula, and educational qualifications of teachers. 98 F. Supp. 797. The case is here on direct appeal under 28 U. S. C. § 1253." (347 US 483)
      The District court confirmed Topeka had abided by Plessy v Ferguson that's why it decided against the NAACP.
      The NAACP appealed to the Supreme court on that basis, arguing that even if the facilities were equal Segregation was still not an equal education.The Supreme Court in Brown directly addressed this point, its written as such in the decision....
      "Does segregation of children in public schools solely on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other "tangible" factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities?
      We believe that it does." (347 US 483)
      The Brown case answered the question whether separation on the basis of race could in any way be equal. The answer was no , separation on the basis of race was inherently un-equal. Equal funding or equal facilities does not change this.
