The majority if not all the women who lived in Forbidden city had miserable lives. Only a few could rise to the top to gain favour with the emperor - the majority were sold to the Emperor in some fashion and not there by choice. If they did not strive to rise to the top - or a good position their families would suffer or they would suffer (because only the most favoured concubines had food and better provisions) - if they did bot gain favour with the emperor they would be forced to remain not only chaste for the rest of their lives but without the possibility of even having their own children (even if they did - they did not always get to raise those children) - so yes many of those women had to be calculating to survive
I couldn't muster an ounce of sympathy for Jia. She was so busy digging a grave for Ruyi that she fell in it herself.....and it served right. She could never stop calculating. She was just like Fuca Empress, who, on her deathbed, continued to disparage Ruyi. Even though emperor told her he knew what all she had done to harm Ruyi. Just pitiful.
Jia did all that for a man she loved. She treated her son as a pawn. All he wanted was to be with her yet she used him like that clan and prince used her.

It was a game of schemes and whether or not you liked it, you had to participate in it once you entered the gates of the Forbidden City.

But her clan helped the emperor in war , so he couldn't kill her or punish her clan for any misdeeds. Hence , she was demoted and confined .

If you look closely at the other harem members they usually wear these long rings that protect those nails, only the wealthy would be able to grow such long nails because they didn't have to do any labor. For Jia, she has lost hope in regaining her old status as the Noble Consort, so she bit off her nails. The emperor took it all away and demoted her as a Commoner, one of the lowest rank I think. She is humiliated to have fallen so low and lost her dignity all for nothing. She did everything for one man, a Korean lord who threw her away to save himself in front of the emperor. She's now just waiting for her death to come.
