The Belgian MOTHERSHIP Supercell (June 17-18 2021)

In the night of June 17, a train of severe storms was forecast to race across the BeNeLux countries, so we positioned close to Namur in Southern Belgium.
Around the local airport we were perfectly set for the first storm of the night, that had formed in Northern France. Lightning activity already went crazy before we even got a glimpse of the whole thing.
As it moved in closer the storm revealed its beautiful Low Precipitation features while showing off some crawler lightning that I have captured in slow motion with the iPhone.
Shortly after, its mesocyclone was clearly visible in front of us and while it was already quite elevated it somehow managed to produce a short-lived tornado that seemed to swirl up some dust a couple of kilometers south of us.
As soon as our old storm passed, lightning activity in the storm south of it was beginning to peak, but the incredible supercell that followed exceeded our wildest imaginations for the night.
It arrived as a flickering mothership and our escape window was closing rapidly, so soon we raced Northwards but didn’t make it far through the countless Belgian towns and eventually got swallowed by the flickering beast, smashing us with hail and severe winds.
The storms continued to rage on well into the morning hours but since we weren’t able to chase any further into the Netherlands, we finally decided to call it a day and took a well deserved two hour nap before getting ready for the next round of supercells up in the Netherlands.
