  • A large opportunistic underwater predator has caught the attention of San Diego divers this year. There's been a spike in the number of broadnose sevengill shark sightings this year. KPBS business and environment reporter Erik Anderson says the creatures can grow to 11 feet long and they don't scare easily - and KPBS video journalist took her camera on a dive with the sharks just off La Jolla Cove.

I've had two encounters in two days off South Mission Beach--no kelp forests here. I normally swim from South Mission to Crystal pier, and I stay about 1/4 mile offshore. Yesterday (9/4/2014), I had a simple pass by (less than 10 feet away): I didn't know what kind of shark it was, but it was around 8 or 9 feet and, after watching this video, I believe it was probably a 7-gill. Today (9/5/2014) I had a more frightening encounter: the swell has stirred up the waters and the visibility was down, and there was a large shark (blurry due to vis) slowly circling me in a big arc. It never surfaced, so I don't know if it was a 7-gill. After a summer of 2-mile, shark free swims between South Mission and Crystal Pier, now I'm spooked...

Saw one yesterday night at 10pm lobster diving off Palos Verdes, California. I didn't see it until I looked up and it was 4 feet in front of my face, visibility was only about 5-10 feet with sediment. Surprised the heck out of me but it was an awesome encounter.
@skimmilk- heck no it wouldn't, the ocean would kinda suck without sharks

I went diving their yesterday. not a shark in site all tho I did get slammed into by something pretty large and fast I didn't see it but I doubt it was a deal due to the seals sticking by me. what ever hit me did not. I was snorkeling off la jolla cove. past flat rock.
