Fun fact: She recorded this album in her friend's studio on Christmas (no one else wanted to record on Christmas) and thought about naming this album Two Jews on Christmas.
As far as the fact that it was all recorded on Christmas day, there are multiple articles that mention this. It also says this on regina spektor's Wikipedia page. As far as the name of the album, I'm pretty sure that I heard her say this in an old interview. There is a forum which mentions the "two jews on christmas" in a different context. The link is board.reginaspektor.com/index.php?/profile/7957-folderol-and/content/ although this is obviously not official and is not where I heard it from. The producer of the album was Joe Mendelson who is also Jewish (hence the "two jews on christmas"). I'll try to find the interview where she explicitly says this. I'll come back and leave the link to it if I find it. Hope that helped!
@@lizzaurd I think I looked for a little while and then got discouraged and gave up. I am reminded to try again though so thank you (I'm rather confident that I didn't dream this up 😂). If all else fails, it's a good excuse to binge-watch Regina interviews. Always a good time.
She's the only artist I've heard that isn't afraid to sound strange, because it's her. She expresses herself better than anyone I've ever listened to. Awesome lyrics, awesome piano, awesome voice. Beautiful.
She's not the only one but she's a clear stand-out as, back in the 2000's at least, it was definitely part of her style. She was classified as an anti-folk artist for that reason and her poetic yet not always sensible subject matter or word usage.
When she says "Sit on the grass and eat all the flowers" it's like she catches herself not making any sense and tries to speak everyone else's language. ". . . and shit." it's brilliant.
She is definitely my favorite artist. She expresses herself so well... I'm seriously awe struck by her raw talent and self expression. There's so much i want to say, but when it comes to Regina Spektor, I'm speechless.
More people should know about her! (I'm spreading the love with a t-shirt) I only know 3 people who have heard of her: My friend, her older sister, and my awesome R.E (ugh R.E) teacher! i found her via my magical favourite t-shirt with ReSpekt on. That means respect in german, and Re (gina) Spekt (or) must be very language-savvy to know that, as well as french and a few others.
I really enjoy her references to Greek mythology. Icarus was giving wings made of wax and feathers by his father, but he ignored his instructions to not fly to close to the sun an the wings melted. He fell into the ocean and drowned. I don't think most people realize just how dark this woman's work is. It's hauntingly amazing.
This is one of the songs that made me head over heels for Regina. Her imagery is insanely good, you can't help be moved to passionate desperation while you sing along.
They keep on burying our dead They keep on planting their bones in the ground But they won't grow, the sun doesn't help And all we've got is a giant crop of names and dates Possibly my favorite lines :)
This high artistic standard, this serious topic, and this wonderful sense of humor, and her brilliant voice are ingredients that have stirred her to a perfect little work, which Mozart would certainly have liked!
so two years ago i was the only one who knew about this amazing angel at school, and now word has spread and so many people know about her. im so happy. im converting them to regina-ism, that or spektography:)

@teverde579 She doesn't do silly love songs! Only Fidelity, that's really it. And it wasn't silly. She analyzes stories and makes songs of them (Samson, Odepis Rex). She's amazing and imaginitive.
Emilia López I really hope I can convince you otherwise! :-) you can see the evolution of her mental health, her in youth digesting concepts of brute existence, failed love, existential competition, and personal struggles. From the album "Begin to Hope" and forward, you see a change in attitude. She suddenly comes to realize that life is made of all this pain, glory, beauty and death, that despite it all- we cannot escape it and there's something hauntingly beautiful about it. In Remember Us to Life, you see her arrival to adulthood- literal odes to the passing of time and all its beauties, no matter how painful. The new stuff may be more commercial, but don't think it lacks depth! It's definitely told from the perspective of a mother. She is talking to her audience as a mother! It's comforting. I love that we as fans witness her coming of age. It's lovely!

Se meu jardim tivesse uma cerca
If my garden would have a fence

E comer todas as flores
And eat all the flowers

Oi, eu sou Ícaro, eu estou caindo
Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
Abaixo, o homem para julgamento deve me preparar
Down, man for judgment must prepare me
Poupe, oh Deus, em misericórdia me poupe
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me
Cara, eu tenho um sentimento terrível
Man, I have a terrible feeling
Que algo deu errado, muito errado com o mundo
That something's gone awful, very wrong with the world
É algo que fizemos?
Is it something we made?
É algo que comemos?
Is it something we ate?
É algo que bebemos?
Is it something we drank?
Oi, eu sou Ícaro, eu estou caindo
Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
Do pó da terra retornando
From the dust of earth returning
O homem para julgamento deve me preparar
Man for judgment must prepare me
Poupe, oh Deus, em misericórdia me poupe
Spare, oh god, in mercy spare me
Lacrimosa

Nós continuamos enterrando nossos mortos
We keep on burying our dead
Continuamos plantando seus ossos no chão
We keep on planting their bones in the ground
Mas eles não vão crescer
But they won't grow
O sol não ajuda
The sun doesn't help
E tudo o que temos
And all we've got
É uma colheita gigante
Is a giant crop
De nomes e datas
Of names and dates
Oi, eu sou Ícaro, eu estou caindo
Hi, I'm Icarus, I'm falling
Neste dia de lágrimas e luto
Down on this day of tears and mourning
Do pó da terra retornando
From the dust of earth returning
