  • FRANCE 24 spoke to Lina Attalah, co-founder and editor of the independent Egyptian media outlet Mada Masr. In late August, the paper published a story about corruption within the ruling Nation's Future Party, which backs President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. As a result, Attalah and three of her staffers were charged with criminal offences, including "publishing false news", before being released on bail. In a country where press freedom is shrinking, independent Egyptian journalists "feel really lonely", she said.

Sad, she is the last person that believes in free journalism in Egypt.

I really hope that countries like Egypt and Iran can finally transition into democracies, but it has to the local population to do it. In the so called "west" we are tired of being insulted and blamed for other people's mistakes and wrongdoings, so don't expect the "west" to try to bring democracy to those countries... Look what happened in Afghanistan, there people did not even wait until the last western soldiers left the country to receive with open arms the taliban, who forced women to wear hijabs, started killing perceived gays, apostastes, drove away foreign business, shut down schools and made the country reverse to absolute poverty in just a few months...
What did the afghans do? Almost nothing... A few ladies in the streets protested for a couple of days, got beaten up by their relatives and that was the end of it.
for a country to become a democracy, the people need to want it.

The media is not your concern. Making sure you are covered up and chaste is.
