The crowd clapping to Radio GaGa at Live Aid is one of those things I wish I could’ve witnessed in person. It gives me chills to see that many people being happy and enjoying music.
I saw it on TV in Germany, stuck in a chair, so high I couldn't move, except when I had to get up to be sick. (Germans seemed to like their mj mixed with tobacco, so I got really sick.) What a way to waste the experience of a lifetime. I was like that from maybe 11 PM till 5 AM.
Yes, and it’s basic A capella harmonizing, that I’ve heard Gospel singers do like it’s nothing. The parts aren’t difficult. If one likes the Eagles singing, then they like it, usually. I just don’t like Henley or Frye’s vocals. Their voice annoy me, and have something that even on songs with music I really love, just isn’t enough to like it. Desperado makes me want to break whatever is playing it. I have special feelings of breaking things, for many Eagles’ songs. 😄
I have bought very few albums in my 7 decades. Usually just a single every now and then. Never went to a concert, just mostly listened to the radio or watched TV. Sit down. I never bought a Beatles single unless it was "Let it Be", but I'm not sure. I'm so useless. But you are waking me up to music and albums I missed. Thank you again.
I was 17, she was 27 with two kids in my swim class in the YMCA back in 1984.. Yep. We hooked up. Her husband was a cop. And threatened to kill me. But she had a red T top Pontiac Trans Am! She would pull down her boob top and we would ride around Greenwood, Indiana
I saw an interview with Don Henley where he laid it out. It is a song about lost innocence. About going from Adolescence to adulthood and not being able to undo those responsibilities and go back to childhood. He wrote the lyrics on a dark desert highway after leaving the Whiskey, exceedingly drunk and on his way to Needles, CA to find some peyote. Passing the cacti and lonely desert motels, he quickly wrote the words. It has no other meaning than Once you take on the perks of being an adult, you can never go back to being innocent again. You can never go back to virginity.
Interesting. I had always subscribed to the mental institution hypothesis. “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave,” fits that narrative so well, but I suppose it’s even more figurative than that. If Henley says it’s something else, I’ll have to go with that.
@@02TuRDsounds like drugs... "Checking out"... Never leaving=addiction, once an addict always an addict ....even if you don't overdose and die you'll still die an addict (you can never leave the addiction). Just my 2 cents
It has that meaning for Don, and it also has whatever meanings that listeners ascribe to it, to those listeners. That's the way it goes with songs and lyrics. Especially cryptic ones.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” always makes me think of my Dad, who has been gone since I was 19 years old. It’s related to a specific moment in time, and it’s something I share with my own child now.
I’m always amazed by how much I learn about my favorite songs and bands from viewing your content. So well-written and delivered. You truly are the Professor of Rock!
Back in the 80s and 90s, classic rock stations would play “deep cuts” of artists and bands. For example, “Sleeping With The Television On” by Billy Joel. You NEVER hear that song on classic rock radio anymore. They play the hit songs, but only if they are considered “rock”. Classic rock stations will never play The Monkees. They’ll never play any Beatles songs before 1966. Why? Because they’re more “pop”. Yet they also never play any Genesis songs from the Peter Gabriel era or Pink Floyd from the Syd Barrett era. Makes me wonder if we need a classic pop station. This is why I have satellite radio.
I agree, but even Satellite radio is guilty of this. Steve Van Zant show "Little Steven's Underground Garage" is probably the best for covering lesser played classic rock.
Unfortunately radio stations are like this. Blinkered. The BBC thinks the only thing ever recorded by Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel was "Come Up and See Me", for instance'; everything else, great tracks like "Sebastian" or "Mr Soft" or "Judy Teen" are ignored. Even when Harley died, the only tribute song to be heard on BBC radio was "Come Up And See Me". You want to hear something by the Blue Öyster Cult on the BBC that isn't "Don't Fear The Reaper"? Dream on... forget "Godzilla" or "I Love The Night" or "The Pact" or the one I'd replace "Reaper" with on broadcast radio, "Golden Age of Leather" -or for sheer gonzo impact, "Dominance and Submission" or "ME262".
I have a local classic rock station that is basically a glorified pirate station. It's some dude out in Florence AZ with a giant music collection, and he pays the FCC license to stay legit. He will play bootlegs, deep cuts, etc.
lucky for us we have indie radio we had a indie classic station everthing motown soul rock deep cuts requests but developer drove them out went off air everyone was bummed
My trick was I went almost 40 years without listening to '80s music, now I'm reliving it all again and loving all of it, even the songs most people have heard to many times. P.S. I've always loved Zep's Rain Song.
Well played! As a karaoke aficionado, “Don’t Stop Believing” was in a personal list of 7 songs that I would have been happy to never hear them again.” …..Sopranos, Family Guy, and Glee REALLY got on my nerves for bringing it back every few years. Now I can tolerate it again though.

But sometimes the audience is too set in their ways or too plain drunk to appreciate & demand other, sometimes better, songs.
DJs are a thing of the past. Play lists are computer generated, and the DJ, if there is one, does there sounders prerecorded. There are some college stations and internet that do it the old fashioned way.
Nearly all radio stations use play lists these days. These play lists will be based on a bands most liked and well known songs, so type in Pink Floyd you will usually get Comfortably Numb, Deep Purple..... Smoke On The Water, Lynyrd Skynyrd ....Freebird, Queen ... Bohemian Rhapsody etc. The rock stations do vary it a bit, but generally it will still be the band's most popular and well known songs that get played. Lay Your Hands On Me gets played here in the UK almost as much as Living On A Prayer as does Dead or Alive. To be honest I've stopped listening to music on the radio, it was much better in the old days when the DJ had some input on what was played. That's why Bohemian Rhapsody was a hit in the first place, the Radio stations hated it but some of the DJs liked it so played it anyhow. Here in the UK Radio GaGa gets played to death as well by the way.
ALL great songs, Adam! The “over played”, as well as your substitutions. Not one of the “over played” is in my mind as such, at all, but the secondary, “take a break” songs are wonderful, too. Thanks for this episode, Adam! ✨ “If you remember the Cabbage Patch craze of the 1980’s, you’re gonna love this channel!” I don’t know where that came from, but there it is!😂😂
"Don't Stop Believin'" will always bring me back to a time when I still had childhood wonder at the world around me... before I had to start being cynical (Sound familiar, Supertramp fans?). It was played constantly around Christmas of 1981, and I think that was the last of my childhood innocence days. After that, the real world started to seep in to my thinking.
Journey have such an amazing discography and also what shocks me is that not a lot of the Gregg rolie era is ever played on classic rock radio the first 3 journey albums and the first few Steve Perry and Gregg rolie albums are almost totally forgotten by radio and they're fantastic and should get more airplay
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 absolutely a few years ago I found from bgo records which is a British company that reissues classic rock CDs and they usually come in 2 cd sets so I found the second and third journey albums look into the future and next these two albums are so radically different from what the Steve Perry era would be it's more prog and jazz rock and well worth exploring
I only have Look Into The Future and Next on LP and Journey, Look Into The Futrue and Next on CD. And I saw Ringo Starr's All Star Band a few years ago. I got my ticket when I hear Gregg Rolie was touring with the band. My only disappoinment? I wish Gregg would play a song from the first three Journey albums.
"And I won't stop! Believing! Oh man, it may sound like treason. I know they're the best But let's give a rest To the same old songs!" -*Same Old Song* Taking Dawn
Interestingly, The Last Resort was supposed to have been the title track for the album that became Hotel California. The latter was a late addition to the work and took over the vibe of the album.
The Rain Song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. My favorite Zep song (and that's saying something). The Journey selection is also top notch. Still They Ride is one of my favorites from them. Dean Castronovo does an incredible job with the song with Journey's current lineup.
Don’t Stop Believing was voted our class song in High School and I married that small town girl from down south (Virginia) and I lived and grew up in the DownRiver area south of Detroit.
When you mentioned “Hotel California,” I immediately thought of “Seven Bridges Road.” I love the harmony. As to Queen, I don’t think I could pick one other song, since they recorded so many really great songs, many of which were never singles.
Just happy to be here today. Love these episodes that explore "other" songs. Remember, a song is overplayed only because they are loved by many. Thanks Professor. Great shirt, and I hope everyone has a great weekend. ❤
GREAT choices for substitutions. Still They Ride is a great song, but I humbly submit the rocker "Stone In Love" also, which never got it's due imo. As for "The Rain Song", even though I was a huge Led Zeppelin fan, I always gravitated towards the hard rockers, until I was at a house party 35 years ago, and some guy played "The Rain Song" MASTERFULLY on an electric guitar and I absolutely fell in love with it, and have loved it ever since. Led Zeppelin RULES!! 😁
Nice mention of “Still They Ride”. Anyone who was in high school in the old days should remember cruisin’ main on the weekends, riding endlessly through the night to meet friends or to go to a party. It is so true as decades go by people move, and pass. The words “now, nobody knows his name” are very true in the story he tells. Poignant and sad with an orchestration that is so beautiful, it could almost be a funeral song.
I would consider "Thank You" to be Led Zep's first Ballad. And as much as I love the Rain Song I would offer No Quarter or Achilles Last Stand as a proper epic to replace Stairway
I would to, but maybe they didn't play it in concert a lot so Harrison might not have known. I guess it does "rock up" a bit near the end, but it's still a ballad to me.
Great episode! Three of my all time favorite bands here, but I agree ~ those songs are overplayed. My alternate picks for the Eagles would be Take it to the Limit (never tire of that one), Journey's Stone in Love, and Queen's Too Much Love Will Kill You. Great lyrics, harmonies and relatability. That's what makes a song for me.
Wow, 10 great songs in this video! When you were talking about Zeppelin, I thought the replacement song was going to be "All My Love." If you can consider it a ballad (it's more like a mid-tempo love song), I think it's HIGHLY underrated! The Bon Jovi replacement also surprised me. "Lay Your Hands On Me" is definitely underrated, because it never plays on the radio. I thought you might've chosen "Never Say Goodbye." That one IS a ballad, though, not a rocker. You could say it's also overplayed, especially for a song that wasn't released as a single. I actually heard it play at Walmart last night. Thanks for another great video, Professor!!! 🙂
I'm not a big Bon Jovi fan, but "Lay Your Hands On Me" is definitely a great song. It's almost as good as the identically titled Peter Gabriel song off the 1982 4th "Peter Gabriel" album (called "Security" in the US).
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" refers to fame. Actually, the whole song is about that, but that one line is the one that hits the nail on the head.
And here I interpreted it to be about excesses and addictions, of course after when I was little thinking they were literally being held hostage at this hotel!😂
I think Queen's song "It's Late" from their album News the World would be an excellent substitute for "Bohemian Rhapsody". "It's Late" is 6½ minutes long, start out slow, get more upbeat, climaxes with Brian May's fast-paced guitar solo, winds down, and just as you thought the song is about to end, it climaxes once again with another fast-paced May solo, and then finally coming to an end.
Here's additional overplayed songs, Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child o' Mine" AC/DC's "Back in Black" and "Thunderstruck" Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" Heart's "Barracuda" Boston's "More Than a Feeling" David Bowie's "Let's Dance" Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" I can go on!
@@debbiereitmulder2151 Well it's funny, I hear Professor (and some other people on RUclips) talk about how they don't hear certain songs on the radio, but here in Canada, I still hear some of them, examples would be Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff" the Band's "The Weight" "Up on Cripple Creak" and "The Shape I'm In" the Guess Who's "Share the Land" Triumph's "Lay It on the Line" and "Hold On" Santana's "Hold On" (It's the only song I keep hearing of them on radio over here, I never hear their other stuff) April Wine's stuff, Glass Tiger's stuff, I can go on.
"Just a city boy. Born and raised in South Detroit. He took the midnight train, going anywhere". As Jim Gaffigan said, "Because anywhere was better than Detroit". Actually, your list was very well thought out and the suggested alternate songs were good choices.
This was a brilliant video theme. Rather than a view of "overplayed because they're not deserving", a view of "taking a break". Ultimately, that will INcrease appreciation of the timeless classics when we spin them once more. Nicely done!
Hearing a song outside its normal setting can undo this curse. Example: 'More than a Feeling' is something I'm just numb to after radio gave me a 3000x dose. I watched "The Men Who Stare At Goats" and the song plays. It was refreshing and full bodied. This song's great!
This is an awesome collection of Rock Ballads from a lot of legendary bands and artists from the past as always Thank You for the Memories of Classic Rock and Roll Thanks Professor.🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶 R.I.P. Phil Lesh bassist of the Grateful Dead.💗🎸🎸💗
I know what this is referring to by the title alone - I'll watch AFTER I post this comment. Harrison was wrong; Zeppelin HAD, in fact, recorded the masterful ballad "Thank You" which appears on their second album.
Nothing is more memorable to me than the start of the 4th quarter at Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium when 30,000 people sing Don’t Start Believing in unison with an equal number of cowbells clanging in rhythm.
I was honestly hoping to hear Rubicon as a replacement for Don't Stop Believin'. It's theme pairs so well with its more popular brother; striving, taking chances, taking action to make one's dreams a reality, and you rarely hear it played on the radio. On the other hand, Separate Ways brings that energy that makes you bounce in your seat and play air keyboards. There are a lot of songs that make you think "Nice." when it comes on the radio, but it's another thing entirely when you hear the opening notes and think "YESSSSSSSSS!" I may be slightly biased towards Frontiers. Teeny bit.
These songs are like the bag of Doritos sitting in the pantry you grab when nothing looks good for lunch. At one point they hit the spot, and every now and again they work when you're on a reeeaaalllly long drive down the 93.
In the early 2000s I was a manager at a steakhouse in the Atlanta metro. We had live music every night. On Monday was Open Mic Night, where anyone with an instrument (or voice) could join the band. We had flyers printed for advertising, with one even saying "bring your zither..." One night a woman brought her zither, and the rest of the band broke into a magical, spell-binding, once-in-a-lifetime rendition of Seven Bridges Road. Complete with mesmerizing harmonies. It was one of those magical moments you knew could never be duplicated. No matter how many times you played it, or how hard you tried, it would never be the same. I wish I had a way to record it back then, but I was sanitizing the menus for the next day.
At a karaoke bar, somebody forced me to sing Hotel California. I’m traumatized by the experience. The song is soooo damn long. I now hate it and think of The Big Lebowski who hates The Eagles. I don’t hate the eagles, but sick of the song. The Rain Song by Zeppelin is def underrated. A masterpiece. Great analysis , Prof.
Talk about over-played... When I was in college, I lived in a single dorm room on a hall where all the rooms were singles. The girl in the room next to mine had exactly three albums (vinyl, not CD's; they hadn't been invented yet), and she played them incessantly. They were _Tubular Bells_ by Mike Oldfield, _The Grand Illusion_ by Styx, and (wait for it) _Hotel California_ by the Eagles. She played at least one of them, in its entirety, at full volume, _every day._ Needless to say, after I graduated, I had to buy all three albums... 🙄
YES!! Radio Gaga is my FAVOURITE Queen song! Another overplayed song is Simple Minds Don’t You Forget About Me. Replace with Alive and Kicking or Sanctify Yourself.
I agree 100 percent with all your choices and swaps Adam. I have to say I truly miss when we had legit DJ's on the radio. Great voices and distinctive personalities. It was fun getting to call in and make a request, trying to win something in their contests, all that. Now we might have a DJ here and there, but they are stuck with these digital playlists that you can set your watch by. iHeart and the likes have such a monopoly over everything, it's boring. Your channel brings the joy back. Thanks Adam.
I ❤️ Journey; one of my favorite bands. But every time I hear DSB on the radio, I think, "Journey had a dozen hits! Why can't you guys play them?!" Modern radio playlists are an absolute repetitive bore... main reason I don't listen to radio much anymore.
This is my favorite Professor of Rock video, even though I disagreed with every replacement. The love you show for the overplayed songs really resonated with me. While I would have selected different replacements, your choices are solid and appreciated. Thanks!
On board with all of these, except "Stairway." It doesn't get that much radio play, and I guess I just never got THAT over it. If I had to pick Zep song in this category, it would be "Black Dog."
My father (now 90) said he pictures the Muppets when he hears Bohemian Rhapsody, and thought they'd be so cool to see. 😊💜😎 Have the Muppets ever done that?does anyone know?
I really like how you took what might be considered a “negative” topic and inserted a positive twist on it. The “replacement” choices are great as well.
There are videos on YT of guys going into countless instrument shops to buy a guitar, and when they want to try one out, they start the intro to Stairway and the shop owner/assistant shouts 'no, no, no.....not that', because they are so sick of hearing it nearly every time somebody wants to buy a guitar.
Thanks, Prof of Rock for including and deep respect for that: "Hotel California."! Yes I am so sick of hearing that one, yet like you said also deeply admire it. "Seven Bridges Road" is a very good temp replacement; I first heard and latched on a year plus ago. Helped me re-appreciate the Eagles.
See, for me, I could live the rest of my life without ever hearing We Will Rock You again. Conversely, I'm down for Stairway and Hotel anytime, anyday, any state. Livin' on a Prayer and Don't Stop, I have to be pleasantly buzzed to put those on. Bohemian is somewhere in between. I can also listen to the Rain Song, Seven Bridges and Radio Ga Ga any time.
I was hoping you were gonna pick "Only the young" from Journey. 😊It has a special place. Its an amazing song and has an amazing story behind it with their visitation in the hospital with young Kenny Sykaluk. One of the saddest and most heart wrenching stories of the rock era.😢 RIP kid! I tell his story to my kids when they start feeling like they just have the worst life ever, like teenagers do. The saddest thing is,in just a few short years he would have a treatment that would have let him live much much longer!
Great top "5!" I must agree, with you....... I would add Fleetwood Mac's "Go your Own Way" I'm a big fan of Fleetwood Mac, so, didn't bother me, hearing it, quite often. I was lucky enough to see the last concert that Christine played in, with the band (maybe 2015?) Thanks Adam, for all your great videos!! ❤
You picked absolutely correct…. We all love those songs but they do get over played. All of these are great bands and have so many great songs I wish they played a more diverse selection from them.
Any other early Queen song could've, should've received recognition over the Gag song; White Queen, Liar, Lap of the Gods, Now I'm Here, to name a few. White Queen, especially.
Maybe “Misty Mountain Hop” from Zeppelin, “In and Out of Love” Bon Jovi, “Hammer to Fall, One Vision” Queen ,” Hard Day Tonight” Eagles and anything else from Journey in saying that down here in Australia maybe “ Good Die Young or Only Lonely “ from the Divinyls instead of Pleasure and Pain or “I touch myself “ as an example of a localised song/s beaten to death and yet your 5 examples apply here too
Adam, you were the one who got me into LZ with your episode on Rain. I grew up in the 70s and knew LZ but never really cared for them. But I liked your Rain episode so much that I bought Houses - and was blown away. Went out and got a boxed set of all their albums; how did I ever miss them?? I will never be able to thank you enough. ❤
Here's my list of substitute songs. Eagles: "One of These Nights" Zeppelin: "All My Love" Bon Jovi: "Raise Your Hands" Journey: "Mother Father" Queen: "Hammer to Fall" The *One of Theae Nights* title track resonates for me as a proto-Disco tune, something that many people don't even know Eagles did, even if they know the song. "All My Love" is a combination of my adoration for synthesizers and the raw emotions Robert was grappling with after the death of his son. "Raise Your Hands" gets my nod for being the Bon Jovi tune licensed by Mel Brooks for my favorite film of his, Spaceballs. "Mother Father" came my way when my mother got me a copy of *Escape* - right when she and my father split up in 2003. "Hammer to Fall" hit me close to home as a prime example of how Brian May was the Queen member whose original material helped push them in the direction of the same melodic rock template as Journey during the 80s, and I consider that only a good thing.
I own one record by Queen, the single release of Radio Ga Ga I was that lonely teenage kid listening to the radio late at night, so it hit hard with me I didn't really get into music until 1982 when I was 18 years old Until then I just listened to whatever came on the radio A switch flipped in '82 and I actually started to pick and choose what I listened to from that point on
Love "Seven Bridges Road". But we have a road in Rome, GA that goes to an old cemetery, on Berry College land, where people claim you count 5 bridges going in but only 4 coming out (or 3 in and 2 out, according to who tells the story). For some reason it reminds me of that.
I agree, Still They Ride is such a great song, Steve’s voice, Neal’s guitar-amazing, Ross on base Steve Smith drums and Jonathan on keys, together is top playing of each band member’s talent. Each instrument and vocals don’t miss a beat harmony. 💯🎸🎶
"BoRhap" has nuthin' on "The Prophet Song". I'll fight anyone on that! 😊 Every time I hear Brian's notes on that toy koto, my neck hairs do gymnastics. Heh. Whenever we played Magic The Gathering, anytime a coupla Saran Angels hit the table, everyone would do the epic "Ahhh! Ahhh-haaaaaaah" section from that. And we knew what was coming next. Sure enough, someone would start belting out the vocal intro to a Styx classic whenever they were about to drop two "Man Of Miracles" to help those Angels tear our Aurochs and Lhurgoyfs to shreds ... 😂
Man, I just have to give you a major thumbs up on your writing. I’m obviously a music lover being a fan of your channel. But as someone who had multiple little old ladies as high school English teachers who insisted we know how to read classic literature and be able to write persuasively and effectively I equally enjoy the way you write these episodes. Well done, my friend.
Nonono. . ."Radio Ga-Ga" is a great song, I'll agree. I bought the album (on vinyl) when it came out, but if you're gonna replace, "Bohemian Rhapsody", you need something else that bombastic and somewhat complex. I suggest, "Innuendo", the title track from Freddie's last album. Look, nothing's gonna compare to "BR", but you have to get into the same neighborhood at least.
When I was a kid and I discovered Led Zeppelin, I used to listen to their music every day. Nowadays, whenever they pop up on the radio or on a playlist, I hit the skip button. Same with Nirvana, Radiohead and The Beatles. We need to find alternatives to the classic rock bands and bring out of obscurity some great underrated artists that don’t get the airplay they deserve.
Just looking at the fringe on Jon's lame ass "thank God Nirvana killed this stuff" jacket is painful. Remember that time Triumph The Insult Comic Dog asked Heather Locklear if Richie "feathered his pubes" 🤣😂😂😂
I live in Nicaragua, a country that loves (bad) 80s music (Laura Branigan, Boney M, Sheenah Easton kind of music) and the Bee Gees (makes up for the bad 80s music). I have heard Living on a Prayer countless times. I swear every time I go to Restaurant/bar they see me, the foreigner, and put on Living in a Prayer.
Remember the time Triumph The Insult Comic Dog asked Heather Locklear if Richie feathered his pubes? She laughed hard enough to make it quite clear that she was meta conscious of the ridiculousness🤣😂😂

@@ProfessorofRock I agree with many of your choices, but "Radio Gaga"? I like the song, but my choice would be (probably another overplayed Queen song) "Somebody to Love". As always, I love how you explain the song in specific detail. Cheers.

I’m always amazed by how much I learn about my favorite songs and bands from viewing your content. So well-written and delivered. You truly are the Professor of Rock!
He is a virtual encyclopedia for classic rock.
I’ve been promoting “Still They Ride” as one of rock’s most underrated songs for decades! Glad to see it getting its due.
my personal favorite song from them
is colors of the spirit, it's on
their album trial by fire
Oh yes I love that song!
The party's over/hopelessly in love
My absolute favorite Journey song! And I love Journey.
That song is amazing. I belt that out no matter how bad I sound!😊 And Send Her My Love 💕
It’s just bullshit. So baffling.
My trick was I went almost 40 years without listening to '80s music, now I'm reliving it all again and loving all of it, even the songs most people have heard to many times. P.S. I've always loved Zep's Rain Song.
These types of episodes are really fun. 🎵🎶
Thanks!
Karaoke isn't just a destination; it's all about the Journey.
Ha ha!
Of course!
There are so many journey songs I know but I just can't hit his notes...😢😢😢
Well played! As a karaoke aficionado, “Don’t Stop Believing” was in a personal list of 7 songs that I would have been happy to never hear them again.”
…..Sopranos, Family Guy, and Glee REALLY got on my nerves for bringing it back every few years. Now I can tolerate it again though.
I see what you did there, brilliant! 🌟🫵

From the sounds of it, we just need DJs who are passionate about music & are not predictable & lazy. But sometimes the audience is too set in their ways or too plain drunk to appreciate & demand other, sometimes better, songs.
Sums up why I never listen to regular radio and stick to Deep Tracks on Sirius.
My Pet Shop Boys sun would be Rent.
ALL great songs, Adam! The “over played”, as well as your substitutions. Not one of the “over played” is in my mind as such, at all, but the secondary, “take a break” songs are wonderful, too. Thanks for this episode, Adam! ✨
“If you remember the Cabbage Patch craze of the 1980’s, you’re gonna love this channel!” I don’t know where that came from, but there it is!😂😂
Uh-oh. Somebody forgot about that damn "Freebird."
It's in the top 10!
....I CHOSE to! ...ha-HAA!!
I thought that would be number one!
I said the same thing before I saw your post. Great minds think alike. lol
Well i guess there's a Vol 2 in the works@ProfessorofRock
So underrated. Love their 70s stuff.
@@garyoconnordbaairrepair7775 that's really cool look into the future is a definite favorite of the early albums for me and next is really good too
I love all of Journeys albums
Still not tired of any of them.
Don't stop ..... believing....
"And I won't stop! Believing!
Oh man, it may sound like treason.
I know they're the best
But let's give a rest
To the same old songs!"
-*Same Old Song* Taking Dawn
I nominate The Last Resort for Hotel California 'replacement'.
Interestingly, The Last Resort was supposed to have been the title track for the album that became Hotel California. The latter was a late addition to the work and took over the vibe of the album.
I was going to add this one as well. The Last Resort is one of all time favorites.
Same.
I'd lean towards "Wasted Time" myself. No one does melancholy better than Don Henley
Or Wasted Time.
The Rain Song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. My favorite Zep song (and that's saying something). The Journey selection is also top notch. Still They Ride is one of my favorites from them. Dean Castronovo does an incredible job with the song with Journey's current lineup.
All great songs.

@ProfessorofRock you have manifested this principle better than anyone I know
Same here!
He should have selected "The Prophet Song"
Just happy to be here today. Love these episodes that explore "other" songs.
Remember, a song is overplayed only because they are loved by many.
Thanks Professor. Great shirt, and I hope everyone has a great weekend. ❤
Plus, payola does still happen sometimes. Happy weekend to everyone!
Thank you guys. Y'all have a good weekend as well! 😄
Good point, these songs become like the Skin Horse
so true.
@@LaManteca76 Have a great weekend trip in your trailer and motorhome, LaManteca76! I mean, have a good weekend!
😊😊😊
Good call on Rain Song but I would’ve gone with Fool in the Rain.
Ok!
Okay I love Seven Bridges Road so much. I always wonder why it didn't get more play
Same!
I absolutely love Seven Bridges Road
...............................and why it wasn't a bigger hit! Only made the Top 20.
My favorite zep song is no quarter, talk about creating an atmosphere
Yes, Thank You.
I would have picked “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Also a great choice!
Thanks Bill!
All of my Love is a song in honor and inspired by the death of Plant’s son. Recorded in one take because he couldn’t do more than that.
@@gregman1069 Wow, I never knew that. It's sad that some great songs come from tragedies.
I'm not a big Bon Jovi fan, but "Lay Your Hands On Me" is definitely a great song. It's almost as good as the identically titled Peter Gabriel song off the 1982 4th "Peter Gabriel" album (called "Security" in the US).
You could have chosen Runaway. But I don’t know if most people think that song is overplayed or not
"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" refers to fame. Actually, the whole song is about that, but that one line is the one that hits the nail on the head.
Indeed. You know your lyrics.
@@ProfessorofRock 😁
😊
We talked about that in English class.
I love "The Rain Song", but I'd put "Over The Hills And Far Away" as my alternate Zep song. Great video again Professor!
Good list.
You must listen to some good radio stations if you hear "Don't stop me now" often...
I love Don't Stop Me Now...but I don't think it is ever overplayed...
at least not on the stations I listen to.
YES! Rain Song!!! I was hoping that you would choose this one !!! It’s so beautifully done. One of my all time favorite Zeppelin songs.
I just love this channel!! Your exceptional topics would make Casey Cason so proud!
I think you mean Casey Kasem.
You know what you've done by showing those songs again though... I've got Living On a Prayer going round in my head now! Arrgghh.
Someone sang that at karaoke the other day. I had it stuck in my head all night.
I hear you loud and clear. I usually change station.
This is an awesome collection of Rock Ballads from a lot of legendary bands and artists from the past as always Thank You for the Memories

Fantastic songs, all! I’d choose “Runaway “ for Jovi, “Wheel in the Sky” for Journey, and “Hammer to Fall”. Keep rocking 🤟
Love, love, 💕💕💕 love Hammer to fall.
Excellent choices! 🤘🏻
Yes to Wheel in the sky!
I know what this is referring to by the title alone - I'll watch AFTER I post this comment. Harrison was wrong; Zeppelin HAD, in fact, recorded the masterful ballad "Thank You" which appears on their second album.
But it did light a fire.
"Thank You" by Led Zeppelin was the last song played on San Francisco's KRQR before it switched to KLLC. I was in its studio at the time.
I can't be the only one who thought PoR would go with, "We Will Rock You", as the overplayed Queen song.
He should have selected "The Prophet Song"
This sounds like a killer episode fellow music junkies!
I’m pumped and ready for it.
LEt me know what you think!
I love this subject. Great call on the list and the alternatives.
@@ProfessorofRockWhat Fred said (see above).
Nothing is more memorable to me than the start of the 4th quarter at Mississippi State’s Davis Wade Stadium when 30,000 people sing Don’t Start Believing in unison with an equal number of cowbells clanging in rhythm.
As an Alabama fan in 2024 I miss you and the cowbells on our schedule!!!
There are a lot of songs that make you think "Nice." when it comes on the radio, but it's another thing entirely when you hear the opening notes and think "YESSSSSSSSS!"
I may be slightly biased towards Frontiers. Teeny bit.
These songs are like the bag of Doritos sitting in the pantry you grab when nothing looks good for lunch.
At one point they hit the spot, and every now and again they work when you're on a reeeaaalllly long drive down the 93.
Haha! Yup.
I legit got goosebumps when you suggested "Rain Song". I've loved and been fascinated by that song since I was a kid. It's my favorite Zeppelin song.
Prof, you nailed this all the way. Have to give you 5👍 today
Thank you!
In the early 2000s I was a manager at a steakhouse in the Atlanta metro. We had live music every night. On Monday was Open Mic Night, where anyone with an instrument (or voice) could join the band. We had flyers printed for advertising, with one even saying "bring your zither..."
One night a woman brought her zither, and the rest of the band broke into a magical, spell-binding, once-in-a-lifetime rendition of Seven Bridges Road.
Thank you for taking me back. These songs absolutely tell parts of my story. Takes me back to a different time and space that can never be replaced
The harmonies on Seven Bridges Road are absolute perfection.
So great!
What do you think of Steve Young's original? I like Iain Matthews' five part harmony version best.
@@shiroibasketshoes Haven't heard either, will have to check them out.
I think “Since I’ve been Loving You” by Zeppelin showcases each members talent.
She played at least one of them, in its entirety, at full volume, _every day._
Needless to say, after I graduated, I had to buy all three albums... 🙄
YES!! Radio Gaga is my FAVOURITE Queen song!
Another overplayed song is Simple Minds Don’t You Forget About Me. Replace with Alive and Kicking or Sanctify Yourself.
Good call!
Alive and Kicking gets my vote 👍
Tired of Crazy Little Called Love. Almost sick of it for decades.
@@flyteoffancy agree with Simple Minds but I’d change it to See The Light

So true!
Same here. I’m just sick and tired of it.
I don’t know if any Zeppelin song can be classified as overplayed. I think that would be a little too mean.
When I hear that piano opening for DSB, everything gets just a little better.
My father (now 90) said he pictures the Muppets when he hears Bohemian Rhapsody, and thought they'd be so cool to see. 😊💜😎 Have the Muppets ever done that?does anyone know?

Agreeing on the Eagle's replacement song, although my personal favorite is "I Can't Tell You Why".... still listening to the video...💜😎✌️

Maybe not buy into staged videos? Yeah the "No Stairway" sign is an old old joke also used in 'Wayne's World' .
@@bruss529 I believe everything I see online because I'm 70 and thick as shit......wibble.....
I agree with you professor about every song still they ride by journey is one of my favorite songs.
I listen to the same music all the time. Just like a 5 year old.lol
Me too, but this channel has reminded me of all the music I used to listen to. I now find myself widening my options.

I would add Fleetwood Mac's "Go your Own Way"
I'm a big fan of Fleetwood Mac, so, didn't bother me, hearing it, quite often. I was lucky enough to see the last concert that Christine played in, with the band (maybe 2015?)
Thanks Adam, for all your great videos!! ❤
Isn't that a cover from The Cranberries?
You picked absolutely correct…. We all love those songs but they do get over played. All of these are great bands and have so many great songs I wish they played a more diverse selection from them.
Any other early Queen song could've, should've received recognition over the Gag song; White Queen, Liar, Lap of the Gods, Now I'm Here, to name a few. White Queen, especially.
Maybe “Misty Mountain Hop” from Zeppelin, “In and Out of Love” Bon Jovi, “Hammer to Fall, One Vision” Queen ,” Hard Day Tonight” Eagles and anything else from Journey in saying that down here in Australia maybe “ Good Die Young or Only Lonely “ from the Divinyls instead of Pleasure and Pain or “I touch myself “ as an example of a localised song/s beaten to death and yet your 5 examples apply here too
I'm actually not a fan of most of the replacement songs, but I love me some Radio Gaga!
Radio Gag Me?
Radio Gaga is AMAZING!

Eagles: "One of These Nights"
Zeppelin: "All My Love"
Bon Jovi: "Raise Your Hands"
Journey: "Mother Father"
Queen: "Hammer to Fall"
The *One of Theae Nights* title track resonates for me as a proto-Disco tune, something that many people don't even know Eagles did, even if they know the song.
One of These Nights is a superb call. Love most of the Eagles work but that track is my favourite. Absolutely gorgeous intro to that track 👍
Interesting...I love so many songs by Queen but skip Hammer To Fall
Not that I usually question somebody's taste, @@kevinstarski1598 , but you might want to give the song another chance.

I own one record by Queen, the single release of Radio Ga Ga
I was that lonely teenage kid listening to the radio late at night, so it hit hard with me
I didn't really get into music until 1982 when I was 18 years old
Until then I just listened to whatever came on the radio
A switch flipped in '82 and I actually started to pick and choose what I listened to from that point on
Love "Seven Bridges Road".
great t-shirt Prof. One of the ultimate 80s movies.
Amen!
Seven Bridges Road is my favorite Eagles song. I have always felt it vastly underrated. Thanks for showcasing it.
Yes! 🙌
In a similar vein... Innuendo, after their patchy period known as the 80's, I am so glad that they finished their main story with that album/single.
I also was thinking innuendo, can't argue with prophet song either, two of my favourite Queen tracks.
Ooh, a countdown! I love when he does countdowns.
...I miss the (weekly) Top Tenners Prof. does, because my memory sh-oots back with SO many moments! ...allows me to BLAB, too! ...ha-HAAA!!
Hopefully not the Final Countdown..🤣
I always want to hear the top 10 redux countdowns on a Saturday. This was the next best thing.
@@martinkasper197 ....OH MY GOD, I forgot to add that to me LIST! ....Thanks, Martin! ; )
@martinkasper197 Ha! I see what you did there.
I want the overplayed songs to be played even more-I want more people (more generations) to know the songs, the albums, the artists.
"Living On A Prayer" is just painful to listen to at this point. When it comes on the radio, I just pray there's something better on another station.
Agree
Blasphemy
My husband would sing "I sniffed your underwear" to "Livin' On A Prayer". He was goofy sometimes. 🤣 I really miss him.
I can put "Dont Stop Believing" on loop and never tire of it. It's just one of those songs.
Not me!
I haven't thought forever 💭 about the fact that there WAS AN END to the tv broadcasting day - yep, young folks, it REALLY happened.
Very, very good and thoughtful episode Professor.
Fantastic episode! Thank you
Thanks for watching.
LOVE your stuff man
Not sure I need to give any of these a rest but your suggested “substitutions” are spot on. Well done!
Overplayed songs? AHHHHHHHH! But I can't wait to hear the songs that need "their shot in the spotlight"!
Let me know what you think!
@@ProfessorofRock I agree with many of your choices, but "Radio Gaga"? I like the song, but my choice would be (probably another overplayed Queen song) "Somebody to Love". As always, I love how you explain the song in specific detail. Cheers.
Underrated songs that should get more airplay:
REO Speedwagon, Out of Season
U2, The Three Sunrises
ELO, Twilight
Yes!!! Out of Season is so catchy! It will stay in my head for days, not that I mind.
And how can you not love the little guitar intro?
Bohemian Rhapsody is the one song on this list that I don’t get tired of.
Same here.
Also, I always get pumped up when *We Will Rock you* is blasted LOUD and shaking the bleachers...
Neither do I. I'm always excited when it comes on. Always.
i
first heard it on

Same here.
Im a huge Queen fan. So you can't over play Queen
