- Coming up, we’re telling the tale of a misunderstood sibling rivalry between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. We’re talking two legendary singer-songwriters who were the driving engines behind one of Music’s most legendary bands The Beatles… until it all fell apart. And yeah, it was one hell of a fallout. And that’s where we’re going with today’s episode, the aftermath and all its wreckage. As Paul and John went solo, a war of words ensued through their music… songwriting skirmishes and potshots launched via lyrics. Including some low blows. But was it really as bad as it seemed? The answer may surprise you. Today, it’s an all-out, free-for-all, “tell us how you really feel” songwriting slugfest and a multi-song episode that proves that the pen is mightier than the sword… Would there be a happy ending? Find out NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Today, we’ve got a really good show for you. I’m excited about this one, I’ve been wanting to talk about it for a while. It’s a story of sibling rivalry, maybe not literally, but for this band it comes pretty close. I’m referring to The Beatles, or more specifically what happened after the band broke-up… especially between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. There were definitely some rough patches there.I want to take a closer look at the feud between Paul and John and find out if there was really something to it or if it has been overhyped by the media.
The two of course engaged in an epic war of words through their songwriting. They were like two heavy-weight boxers trading punches through their lyrics. Some of those were cheap shots and really hit the other guy where it hurts. So to tell the story I’m going to zero in on a few different tracks, including McCartney’s John Lennon jab 'Too Many People’ and John’s ice-cold uppercut How Do You Sleep. And I‘m gonna throw in a couple surprise tracks at the end that will help us round out the story. But to get this thing started, let’s do the cliff notes version of the Beatles break-up and go from there. Approaching the late 60s, it was clear that each of the Beatles were developing own artistic agendas. The boy band days of I Saw Her Standing There and I Want to Hold Her Hand seemed like light years away.
And by 1968’s White Album, the cracks within the band had started to come apart. Ringo Starr left the group for couple of weeks during the White Album sessions, and George Harrison later quit for five days during the Get Back rehearsals. Exacerbating the band’s growing internal conflicts was the passing of Beatles manager Brian Epstein in August 1967. With Brian gone, Paul pushed for his new father-in-law to manage the band, however, the other Beatles outvoted him in favor of infamous businessman Allen Klein… ultimately leading to a lawsuit...

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Long and Winding Road
Yesterday

A Day in the Life
Norwegian Wood
While my Guitar Gently Weeps
I really like Long and Winding Road... so did a girl in my school. It was the graduation song for both my junior high in 1979 and high school graduation.... in 1983.
Helter Skelter
Rain
Blue Jay Way
Melody at the end of Abby Road
I have a John Story for you. When I was 6 years old I watched them on Ed Sullivan with my two older screaming sisters. a short time later when they toured Seattle, one night we had a frantic phone call from my Seattle cousins saying that the Beatles had come to my grandmother's house. Well, that was the way my 6-year-old ears heard it. The fact was, my Aunt, had met John at the hotel she and her husband were preforming at. As she told me, she was standing in the lobby when John came down the stairs. She had no idea who he was when other ladies started screaming. She said, one girl even passed out next to her. The manager noticed her calm deminer and asked her if she knew any good jazz clubs she could take John to that night. She replied yes and a short time later she was in a limo with John. She told him they could go to some clubs but first, she had to go by my gram's house because she owed her for babysitting. John agreed and a short time later they were parked at Grama's a black area of town. John was going to stay for dinner but a large crowd started forming outside and my two cousins were starting to freak out inside. John offered to pay my aunt's babysitting bill and handed my Grama $50 bucks (which was a lot of money back then and way more than my aunt owed). They then visited a couple of clubs before dropping my Aunt off at her place. She told me he was one of the nicest guys she ever met.
Thank you so much for this great story. I loved John so much. I miss him every day.
preforming sounds exciting
That's so cool!

One of my favorite post Beatles stories was told by Paul:
He was visiting John in New York, and they were watching SNL together, and they tossed around the idea of taking a cab to 30 Rock and crashing the show live on air.
Can you imagine if they ever went through with it? Oh man.
@billg3356 It was not their idea, it was producer Lorne Michaels doing a skit, saying SNL would pay the ex-Beatles a ridiculous low amount- $3000- to reunite on his show ("You can split it any way you want; give Ringo less if you want").
John and Paul (who, according to Paul, had been smoking weed that evening) considered going to 30 Rock, a short drive away. But then he considered the headaches of all the attention it would get, how they'd sound with no rehearsal, and the fact they were tired (the weed probably didn't help). They decided not to do it. What might have been...
@@bluemoon-20 I can just image the two showing up and John smirking and saying "Where's my $500 mate?" and Paul trying to hold back outright laughter.
@larrybremer4930 lol, and Paul also said he and John hadn't spoken to George or Ringo lately! I'm guessing it would have been just John and Paul going to 30 Rock and having fun with the idea- no George, no Ringo, and no songs played.
Still, it would have been unreal!
@@bluemoon-20hmmm, this story had to have happened in the mid to late 70s, as for Paul not speaking to Ringo at least, in 1983 on Paul's "Take It Away" song (from his 'Tug of War' album) and subsequent music video, Ringo is right there with him and Linda, playing the drums. 🤷
@@simplysteve68 No Steve, I only meant they were not readily available that night while John and Paul were watching SNL and got the idea to head down to 30 Rock that night. I doubt they could have got Ringo and George to join them on such short notice.
Wouldn't being criticized by Yoko for being a crappy musician be the informal equivalent of winning a Grammy?
Chuck Berry's reaction to her singing is priceless.
He gave a stare to his sound tech that said, "cut this bitch's mic NOW!"
Dude, I've seen that Chuck Berry reaction video and laughed so hard! Despite her bizarre animalistic howling - which got on my nerves like fingernails down a chalkboard - I had to watch it 3 or 4 times. Now that your comment has reminded me of that I must watch it again!
@@boboala1what video is this, pray tell?

I had always loved the Beatles and I respected all of their solo careers. I had just purchased "Double Fantasy" and was reveling in the return of Lennon with my friends when we heard the news on the radio about John's passing. We couldn't believe what we heard. I remember the tears, all of us being musicians and so deeply entrenched and attached to our idols. Then Elton John released "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Jonny)". My band played "Shooting Star" in honor. The protagonist of the song is "Johnny" and he was inspired to play music by The Beatles. It seemed a fitting send-off to our muse as well. I'm so glad that Paul and John were able to make up before John's passing, and his ode to his friend is so personal, I get a tear every time I hear it.
50+ years after the band came to an end, the group still fascinates. Most musicians of nowadays will be lucky to be remembered in 25 years much less 50+.
For sure!
I think you're being rather generous to some musicians.
@@TerrickTerran Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and The Beatles. I suspect their music will have the same longevity as our classical masters.
@@KatieReadsKoziesAndMore I didn't even realize it until a few days ago, but one of my favorite movies, "It Takes Two," has some classical music. I recognized it when I listened to a video that had bits and pieces of 100 classical songs.
I know right?
I bought and have over a half dozen McCartney albums that I still play regularly. Imagine is the only Lennon LP I ever bought and I still have it. Imagine was the only song I wasn't disappointed with. I haven't played it since the 1970s. Lennon's tragic death was a terrible loss to the music world.
I can't imagine a world without John and Paul never have writing songs together. Never like the war of words as solo artists i believe each made the other push their boundaries musically and lyrically and made music that changed the landscape forever. I'm glad you read so much that you give these stories of what happened. Great episode professor
It's now a world I want to live in!
You said the Konami code, which is literally on your shirt, wrong. 🤦🏻♂️
Exactly. It would be very boring without their dynamics.
I think of the Beatles, and I have to include George Martin. He took their musical visions, and was able to translate them to not just take them to new places, but to push the production process to new highs. As solo artists, they were able to take that with them. Paul peaked early, but George I think had the pop longevity, going even into the oughts. John I don't think would've been able to keep up.
well, have you SEEN the movie "Yesterday' yet?
I will remember the day I learned that John had left us. It was a Monday...football was playing on the television in the living room. My bed time was 8 p.m. I was listening to the noise from the living room television as I tried to go to sleep and then I heard it, "....John was shot outside the Dakota..." I believe it was Howard Coselle and I cried myself to sleep that night. We miss you John.
It was Howard cosell.
"Another indicator of the violent world we live in today, a man walked up to John Lennon a few moments ago in New York City and shot him in the back repeatedly".
I called my brother immediately and we cried.
It was my senior year of high school. Unlike so many I was not watching football, I was laying in bed reading school things.
The radio first announced that John had been shot. Then a few minutes later they added that the shots were fatal.
This hit especially hard as John's "Starting Over" (a great song) was getting lots of airplay, and I had just read John's interview in the latest issue of Playboy (father had a subscription).
It has been said that "Silly Love Songs" was a retort to John Lennon telling Paul that he wrote too many love songs. Guess we still wanted those songs, as this one hit #1 on May 22, 1976. Friends always have differences...but true friends get past them and carry on.
That's right.
And it was the biggest hit of 1976 to boot
I thought was a reporter or music critic, not Lennon.
Yup.
Silly love songs has an underrated bass riff on the intro.
John and Paul truly had a "sibling" relationship. They both loved and hated each other at the same time.
Add the old British "taking the piss" at each other added to it... harsh but not as evil as the press interpreted
They brought the best of each other that way
The Yin and Yang of Rock and Roll. Never a one vs the other as much as one AND the other.
Same with me and my sister.

Same with me and your sister too.
Paul is the GOAT. He was the engine that drove the band. I remember growing up in the 70s and listening to wings. What a great band. It's no secret why Paul was the most successful member post Beatles. He's a lyrical and arrangement genius.
Having Denny Laine was a huge boost to Wings also.
I was a HUGE fan of Paul & Wings in the 70s. I remember professing my love to a girl in 9th grade because she looked like Linda. She moved to Oregon 2 weeks later.
Paul used to be my favorite Beatle!
Yeah, Silly Love Songs is the very pinnacle of pop music craftsmanship. Said no one. Ever.
Yeah right, cause it only went to Number 1 in Canada and the US and Number 2 in the UK. Better get out to your woodshed because I guess you have an ax to grind somewhere..
Who is it now?
The complicated relationships we have with people. The finality of death. How we never know when's the last time we will ever see someone alive and have the chance to say how we really feel about them and to tell them what sort of profound effect they've had on our being, our lives and who we are. How we regret that we never said those things we really wanted and needed to say when we clearly had the chance but instead put it off because we naively and unknowingly thought there would be many more chances to do that in the future and misguidedly and regrettably believed we'd have more courage to say what needed to be said then than what we have now. That, of course, never turned out to be true. The regret we often feel about things that we did say and the important and honest things that we truly wanted to say but never did to those who who were so monumental in our lives while we had the chance. That regret haunts us forever and is what life, experience and age teaches us.
I hear your emotion in this description. You are what music strives to capture in life's moments. Thanks for this!
Music is the PUREST of emotion.
Like Kanye said "I chose music over art (he is a legitimately good artist) because I saw how my music effected a crowd."
Even after 60+ years… can’t get enough of Beatles Lore❤🎉
Amen!
seems endless i have lewisohm conplete chronicles and mojo ten years that shook the world by many different journalists and author has more of the lore and god knows how many books about them complete more historical documentary and mojo you could spend days reading just those two
I didn't appreciate the Beatles until after Lennon was murdered. My friend was broken up about it. One day he asked if he could sing a song in my car. It was "Hide your Love Away".From there I started really listening and found my favorite was "Norwegian Wood". I'm glad you enlightened me about the break up. I never heard all that before.
Of all the shows I've watched over these last 6 months, TODAY'S WAS THE BEST. Classy, touching end; great insight to their fued. Thanks, Professor!
Thanks for sharing, the little story about your dad. That connection is so tender.
12:38 Ringo was not only bothered by the rift, he put those sentiments into his 1972 hit "Back Off Boogaloo". "Boogaloo" was his nickname for John Lennon.
I love both of those guys but How do you sleep is absolutely sublime
The breakup of the Beatles was more like a divorce by two people who still loved each other while also by this point unable to stand each other. Both were hurt and I think said things they did not mean or believe only to make the other guy hurt as much as they themselves hurt. Thankfully they both had mostly patched up their relationships with each other before John was taken from us. I will also be forever happy that John had a very successful release with Double Fantasy, which I would say is some of his best work. It was also not many years ago I saw Paul at the Hollywood Bowl, where he commented how the lads were with him last time he was here and how much he missed John and George, very nearly made me cry.
Amazing episode. So personal and intimate. Thanks for reviving this old man.
You got it!
My first album was Wings Over America and I was a Wings fan before I had heard of the Beatles. Maybe I’m Amazed live was such a great song. Then I became a Beatles fan and all hell broke loose when I found I am the Walrus
Great episode Professor! I loved the Beatles and hated their breakup but I have to wonder if they had stayed together would've we have got as much great music from them as a group as we got from their great solo work.🤔 looking back now I truly believe it was for the best! Couldn't imagine not having Paul's Wings or John's great solo songs as well as George and Ringo's! Looking back now I'm glad thing's worked out like it did! Just wish John and George was still with us!😢 Thanks for keeping the music alive Professor!👍
This was a very moving video, Professor. Thank you for sharing stories of your life along with the music.
Thank you!
There is a vid on YT of John doing a TV interview in the mid-70s. He describes his relationship with Paul as very close now, dismisses their 'too many people/how do you sleep' feud by asking if he can't fight with his best friend then who can he fight with?, and he talks about a time recently when he and Paul were at a party and everyone was watching them jamming together. Along with a few other things both of them and others they were hanging out with have said, it is pretty obvious that their friendship was solid; sure, there were ups and downs but their brotherly love was intact. As was the friendship and brotherly love with George and Ringo too. Quite a few times over the years they have all worked together in different combinations. They were no longer a band, they were each doing their own thing, but they were still mates.
Thanks for sharing.

Pretty sure more people than just Gen X knows the Konami Code...
@@HeartlandNewsfeed I still remember the code to go straight to Tyson in “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out”
Little known fact. The Konami code works on real life as well. You just have to figure out the buttons! ^-^
I've often felt like Silly Love Songs was Paul's response that he was writing "Muzak". He wrote a lot of great songs that people absolutely love and cherish, and they don't all have to be weighty tomes of existentialism to be good.
Even though I was born in 1960, the Beatles were the GOAT for me!!! Even the early teeny bopper stuff because it reached into my heart and grabbed something!! The melodies just made me happy. I loved how they evolved into deeper psychedelica..I was kind of before my time (or after my time?) with how much I adored them, at some point I realized how cool they really were! Because did they did evolve and mature. Along with their later single work... Thanks Adam, you too, are the GOAT!!!!
They were so consistent in their quality of music and it always had a great spirit to it.
I am so thankful to have been alive to witness Beatles music as it was unfolding. It was an amazing time, full of music by so many talented musicians. Every couple of years I binge on their entire catalog, and the sound is so old now, that it sounds fresh and new at each listen. It's comforting to know that with less time in front of me than behind, that "In My Life" will be played at my funeral, and that a motion sensor recording of "A Day In the Life" will be placed inside the cannister with my ashes and shot into outer space, so that some being in some distant galaxy who perchance stumbles upon the cannister, will hear that song as they open the lid.
I always kind of chuckle when people exaggerate how different John and Paul were from each other. They were, in fact, in agreement over 90% of their music. And for the most part, what differences they did have complemented each other. Paul tended to knock off some of John's sharp edges, and John tended to offset some of Paul's sappier inclinations. While they tended to write separately, they were a team regardless.
Love how you relate to your dad over The Beatles. I'm sure there's lot of parents and children that can understand. ❤
McCartney’s drums in the Coming Up video read “Plastic Mac Band,” surely a reference to the Plastic Ono Band.
The split was a natural progression. And from it, we were gifted so much more music than if they had tried to continue on within the confines they'd each grown beyond. Grateful for all of it. What a journey!
"Here Today" is a beautiful song! You can feel how much Lennon meant to McCartney. I'm pretty sure the feeling was mutual for John too. It's hard to not cry listening to that song.
The first time I heard that was the live solo he did in some room in New York with bad audio on some random person's cell phone.
I was blown away. One of the few times a song got to me. What Paul and musicians can do is unequalled on earth.
I had the chance to see Paul McCartney on his "out there " tour( 2015? or 2016?)....wow what a show! Paul played 3 solid hours... never took a break, played many on the beatles famous songs, told heart filled stories of both John and George and how he missing them and the joys they had. On top of that he talked with the audience like it was his first time playing for them. IT FELT LIKE I SAW THE BEATLES !!! Paul came across like he entertained and this was not work or a bother! thanks for the indepth information, will check back to some of those songs!!
This is a great example of the old saw: The opposite of love is not hate; it's indifference.
Now if only Hall and Oats can watch this program. I have grown in appreciation of the music created by the Beatles over the years and thank you for sharing the back story because it adds to the richness of the music produced.
Hoping everyone has a better week than the Beatles did when they broke up.

When I think of the Beatles and their successive solo careers I think of the quote from Aristotle, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." Each was amazing in their own way, but together they were epoch.

Thanks Professor of Rock. Very touching and interesting story of the Beatles. Also thank you for sharing the story about your Dad. I know you miss him as I do mine.
John later on professed his love for Paul. He stated on Dick Cavett that Paul was his best friend and yes they bitched at each other occasionally. John also told a cabby that he loved Paul and would do anything for him.
One wonders if John had lived into the 2000’s if there would have been musical collaborations between he and Paul.

There were a couple of little jabs on the Wild Life album - there was a song called Dear Friend and on Some People Never Know (which is a great track), Paul sings "Some people can sleep at nighttime believing their love is alive." Afterwards, there were a few nods to each other as well - Paul wrote Let Me Roll It on the Band on the Run LP which was inspired by John and John returned the favor on Beef Jerky on his Walls and Bridges LP (there's a little guitar lick which sounds closely to the riff on LMRI). Paul even mentioned him on Let Em In as "Brother John".
.....a FAR-better album than MOST critics admitted at the time of its release.....
@@ogam5 Wild Life is probably my 3rd favorite Wings album after Band on the Run and Venus and Mars. Some People Never Know is excellent, Mumbo is a bop, Love is Strange is fun as hell, and Dear Friend is just filled with emotion. The title track is solid as well, but carries on a little too long.
I appreciate too, that there was a “musical” Beatles Reunion of sorts, when all 4 Beatles magically re-appeared together sonically in the songs, “Real Love” & “Free as a Bird” with the incredible technical skill of, Jeff Lynn, from ELO. Those 2 songs rank right up there among the best in the Beatles catalog. Long live the Beatles and may long live your father’s spirit in your great accomplishment with your awesome channel. Through music, we all become immortal.🙌🏻🙌🏻🌎🍎
The main issues I have about John is that he basically turned his back on what made him who he was, and Yoko. Idc what anybody says, Yoko had alot to do with the Beatles breaking up. She had some power over John, whatever it may have been. He changed when she came into the picture. I honestly think the Beatles could've lasted till maybe 1975 atleast, then went there own separate ways. He just had a different way of thinking and it didn't fit the Beatles anymore. Does anybody remember the VH1 movie "Two of us"? It depicts Paul going to visit John and spending the day with him talking about everything and anything. They showed the SNL scene where Lorne Michaels offered the Beatles $3000.00 to come and perform and Paul and John almost did it until Yoko called and John reverted back to what was his "Normal" self again at the time. If you haven't seen it, it is here on RUclips. I loved the Beatles music but in all honesty, John was my least favorite member. Paul, Ringo, and George to me were much more likable than John. Idk, I guess I just didn't "get" John and his way of thinking. Thank you for this episode P O R, it was a good one.
I'm not downplaying John's contribution to the world of music, to me he just seen the world in a different light and alot of people just didn't get him.
John is my very least favorite Beatle
I can’t stand John Lennon songs. Have to turn the channel when they come on. Imagine is such a stupid song.
On the other hand, can’t get enough of Paul McCartney songs and love to crank them up.
The information presented in this POR reinforces my long held belief that Yoko's complete and transparent control over John was nothing short of terrifying. I do believe there is a lot of evidence to support that she manipulated his thinking, stroking his ego until he thought the two of them were the hippy messiahs or something. That woman did so much damage to he and his family and friends it can not be overstated. I actually find it more than a little disturbing. The more I've found out over the years about the thing he did under her influence have made me lose all respect for him. John and Yoko didn't like something... who gives a rat's a......
but...face it, the Beatles ended at their best, with the question always being asked, what if they continued, this actually sealed their legacy. If they went on and started to create sucky music, or even music that didn't hold up so well some of the magic would be gone.
Wild Life didn't ignore 'How Do You Sleep?' Far from it. There are two clear references: Some People and Dear Friend. Paul first rebuts the accusations on HDYS ('Some people can sleep at nighttime, believing that love is enough') and then offers conciliation ('Who in the world can be right all the right time, I know I was wrong, make me right'). Check out the lyrics to Some People. Finally, Dear Friend offers past reminders and future hope of their renewed friendship.
I can't think of any moment in my life where the death of someone outside of family and friends hit me so hard as the day that John was killed
So sad.

Regarding the lyrics to "How Do You Sleep?" -- I've read that Allen Klein contributed the line, "Since you've gone you're just Another Day," because John's original line was "You probably stole that mother anyway." Klein was worried that McCartney would have grounds to sue Lennon for defamation for suggesting that Paul had stolen the song "Yesterday" from someone else. Thus Klein suggested a substitute line.
Regarding the live version of "Coming Up" which topped the US charts in 1980, I was in the audience when it was recorded in Glasgow in December, 1979. So... I've been on a Billboard #1 hit single!
P.S. I agree that the live version is much better than the studio cut.
I remember hearing an interview with George and he was talking about the time McCartney and Lennon announced to he and Ringo that they would be allowed to have one of their own songs on the next album.
Its the pause and the tone in Harrison's voice when he says _"One song. ...big deal."_
Thanks for sharing!
@@ProfessorofRockit is said that John and Paul thought George was not a good songwriter initially but as time went on he became better which can be seen by him having more tunes on the later albums. As well it was Paul and John that formed the band .
George was given two songs, Ringo one. Considering George was brought into the band to play lead guitar only, he should be grateful for the two songs per album. Initially, he didn't even sing and only learned to write songs after the Beatles became famous. He did covers and Lennon/McCartney penned songs in the beginning.
@@braemtes23 wow so you are carrying on the tradition of belittling George, correct? Is he still the runt teen in the band to you?
Remember, George had 3 on “Revolver” including the opening track. On the US Capital version he had more than John.
This may be your best episode, and that is saying something!
George was my favorite, deep thinker more than the others. My favorite Beatles song While my guitar gently weeps. He was observant, when musicians can’t get along the music suffers. But some groups the irritation creates great music. (Fleet wood Mac) Paul’s best deep thinking was live and let die. Johns was working class hero. They all had their day.
Idk, I think Eleanor Rigby and Blackbird are pretty deep... p.s. that's my favorite Beatles song too.
Oddly I never noticed George, but when he started his solo albums, I felt he wrote the best songs.
Agreed about George. Good man with great songs
😂
Paul had many songs that were deep. Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Let It Be, Blackbird, among many others. Just because he wrote accessible music, doesn’t mean it wasn’t deep. The only one whose writing never got deep is Ringo.
John NEVER said, "War is over," he said,
"War is over, if you want it," which is extremely different.
Despite all the infighting, there was the night when they phoned each other debating whether or not they would accept Lorne Michaels' invitation to appear on SNL.
They were actually together!
Can you imagine if they weren't too tired to go and actually showed up at the studio?!
@@ProfessorofRock There was a tv movie made about it, "Two of Us".
@@peterperpetua2974 yeah but it fictionalized the event somewhat, in that movie they were getting ready to walk out the door to go to SNL but then John got a call from Yoko (who was away on a trip) which ended that.

Great partnership with the 80s t-shirt website. Seriously, I think this is the 1st time ever I've seen a YT channel make an *excellent ad partnership* with an extraordinarily relevant company that is aligned with the content they put out.
I remember those days. We were all broken up at the Beatles breaking up. Good thing they did mend some fences later. I did enjoy Wings a lot though
Wings is awesome!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 So so agree! :)
I loved your breakdown of this musical clash of the titans. I've also really enjoyed your thoughts about musical movies, especially biopics. Would you consider doing more in-depth looks at the movies made about music legends? Your blend of music appreciation and behind the scenes details are exactly what I want to hear about those movies!
The album Wildlife did not ignore the feud between John and Paul. The song “Dear Friend” is a direct (though much less confrontational) response to “How Do You Sleep”. The song “Some People Never Know” also responds with the lyric “Some people can sleep at nighttime…”.
When I heard "Silly Love Songs" it was the first time I heard the rebuke to Lennon from McCartney! I really thought you were going to go over that Professor!! And yeah, I was 18 years old when I was in Monterey CA, attending DLI (Defense Language Institute) and I remember our class was really, really upset about the shooting. In fact, when Reagan got shot, I hardly remember any concern (at least in the same intensity) from my classmates! But we loved listening to Double Fantasy! And Elton's "Empty Garden" was a beautiful tribute song (I know there were a lot more, but that was the one that got me....)
Many of us had a bad breakup of a friendship but few come from one of the greatest musical influences in history. That’s some soapbox. Both men seemed to mellow as more time passed from the breakup of the band.
For real!
Was a little young to see the Beatles back in the day, but was lucky enough to see Paul when I was pregnant with my second baby (who is now an entertainment lawyer and major Beatles fan!) and Ringo's All Starr Band. At least I got to see half of them, so I feel grateful, because so many people have never had the privilege.
I saw Paul and Ringo's All Starr Band too!
Even though the Beatles broke up and feuded (somewhat), they all remained friends. Many people see the feuding between them as something more than it was. It really wasn't that rough. They were still on good terms as time passed, even with the occasional dust-up between one another. Imagine John and Paul's surprise when sitting in Johns apartment watching Saturday Night live, and Lorne Michaels offering money just to reunite them on the show in 1976! This is a rock act that can't be ignored, and they knew it. They just went their separate ways.
Love that story. Was going to cover it but ran out of time!
It’s like divorcing someone and still remaining friends with them.
I remember vividly this album. One of the 3 albums I first bought with my allowance. Not eating almost anything just to have those albums. After Tug Of War, I bought Donald Fagen (IGY) and ABC (The Lexicon Of Love) and actually stopped, for awhile. I have no more recollection of what follows next though I bought a lot of cassette tapes back then, such as Thriller. Eventually, I have those 3 albums in CD format and tucked under our bed for a long time now. One day, I'll play them all again.
I'm sobbing now. I love the stories about you and your dad so much.
I'm glad "Here Today" got a mention, an awesome song. I didn't even know it was about John at the time.
John could keep his artistic integrity. For my money, Paul had the better career after the Beatles ended. He was more prolific, and he wrote the better songs. Maybe they were more commercially viable, but that isn't always a bad thing.
Better songs? 😂😂😂
@@DavidVRubio So it wasn't getting better all the time? 😂
Better songs than George?
@@DavidVRubio Better than what John was putting out towards the end. Except that shit he did with Michael Jackson. That was garbage.
Paul definitely lived longer.
Thanks for sharing the memory about your dad❤️
John was emotionally stunned & mentally unbalanced. if he hadnt met Paul, you would not even know Lennon's name.
I would have to say that my favorite was the flip side of "I want to hold your hand, since it starts with, "Well, she was just 17". I loved that because I was 17, when it came out.
Paul needed John to keep him from selling out and John needed Paul to keep him from vanishing up his own backside.
Fun Fact: Sharp-eyed audiophiles will notice in the Coming Up video the version of Paul with the Charlie Chaplin mustache. This is an homage to Ron Mael of the criminally underrated band Sparks. If you haven't heard of Sparks I strongly suggest checking them out. It's well worth the dive and you might just discover some new favorite songs.
There's also a great interview answer from John talking about Julien and him calling each other just talking as father and son, and telling each other about the new bands they've heard and liked... So Julien tells John about Queen... Which he didn't know much about yet... And John wanted to feel cool and hip to his kid, and mentions "have you seen that Hitler guy playing the piano?!" Lmfao
Sparks - from mainstream Pop/Rock (Big Eyes) to New Wave/Pop/Alt Dah-lings (Whomp That Sucker) 😋 I Predict - ed😏.. Ooh ! I have to go back and augment my awesomest 80s song poll answer f/ couple vids ago 💨
Sparks is AMAZING! They had so many great songs.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980: one of them that has NEVER gotten its PROPS, is "Amateur Hour" - DEFINITE Ferry / Roxy vibe, but - still DIFFERENT; melodic as ALL get-up.....
I've been a Beatles fan since before I could talk. I love them all, really. They had so many literally Great songs! Every album was awesome. I do think that Georgia Harrison was a brilliant song writer and vocalist. He's still underrated.
Am i crazy for saying that even though when john died, my parents probably didnt even yet think of having me, it still makes me tear up when i think of it ?
I was 3 when John died & never knew about him til Julian started singing. My older brother explained that his dad had been killed & it hit me hard! I got into John's music after high school and it still makes me sad even though I don't remember him dying. When I pray for the dead, I try to include John as well, esp on December 8th. I always tear up when I watch documentaries on John because I know how it ends. 😢
Beautiful video, so nicely tied together at the end.
JOhn dissed Paul's "Granny Songs". And THEN, he put "I'm Your Angel" on Double Fantasy!!!!! :)
Right!
It was half Yoko Ono's album. I say she put it there. It was a great song.
And "Woman", every bit as treacly as the silliest of Paul's silly love songs.
@@shiroibasketshoes you're right it is really well done.
Also, Thank you for sharing your story about your dad, Professor. Beautiful
My favorite John Lennon song is a song not written by Lennon but about him. 'Only a Fool Would Say', by Steely Dan.
Thanks!
With great friendships can come big arguments and discord. Fantastic to know they were able to reconcile and put their differences to rest.
John Lennon and Rodger Waters. They had the world by the tail but couldn't see past their narcissism.
Some of my favorite post Beatle tunes by the Fabs? "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Here Today", " Imagine", " Love", " All Things Must Pass", and "I'm The Greatest". There are many others post Beatles tunes I love.
My eight year old just got busted last week in third grade for being on an “unauthorized website,” during the classes Chromebook reading session. He was listening to Here Comes the Sun.
Can't really blame the school. They gotta have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to that.
Can you imagine how mad at the school a parent would be if there child accessed "other" stuff on the school computer.
@@williambarry8015I don’t think they can access that “other” stuff, im sure it has some kind of block on it against that “other” stuff doesn’t it?
I appreciate all you do Professor- the music, bands, and icons you cover and interview. I was only a Beatles fan through the "Rubber Soul" album, which I still think is their best. Then my musical life opened up - the Stones, the Kinks, Cream/Derek & the Dominos, the original Fleetwood Mac, - all the bands of the British Invasion. I know I'm leaving some out, but hey - I'm OLD!
Thanks for sharing!
Funny you didn't mention the Sparks reference in the Coming Up video
That's exactly what I read going to point out. The fact that Adam hasn't (to my knowledge) done anything on Sparks is an amazing oversight! Can't really call hoedown the Professor of Rock without "teaching" us about one of the most influential bands of ALL rock.

I always thought of Ringo and George the most realistic anyway.
Added: I just remembered meeting Ringo inn 1993.
I was impressed how genuine he acted.
Paul took a lot of shots at John as well (ex: Three Legs).. that said, John didn't come off as the most likeable person. If not for his celebrity, his bitterness and anger wouldn't have gotten him far. Even after the celebrity run with the Beatles and the early 70s era.. people avoided him and he knew it (ex: Steel and Glass).
it was a pretty brutal break up!
@@ProfessorofRock Excuse. Pre-Beatles break-up.. His treatment of Stu? His treatment of his wife? His son? Never mind countless other stories.
Side tangent, ever notice that the songs "How do you sleep" and "Steel and glass" sound very similar?

Man, that was sad to hear John attack Paul. Peace to Ringo for not being a yes man and standing up to him. I'm glad Paul made peace with Yoko, but I hope she makes peace with GOD!
I hope they all do...
I saw paul in Little Rock. High point of my life was singing along with Paul to Here Today. My fav Paul song bar none. It always makes me cry.❤
John liked to make fun of disabled people. And his early drawings were of horridly crippled people.
He was nastty toward Cynthia and left his firstborn Julian out of his will. I just learned of his Julian snub lately..
The management trued to hide Cyn and Julian because of the Fab4 image.
He left her at the station when they were headed for a majort event.
He didn't leave her. She was lagging behind talking to someone, and as the train was about to leave John was yelling for her to come on. As she was heading toward the train a security guard put out his arm to stop her as the train started moving. That was her fault. John had no control of the train.
I always had a problem with the line ‘jump when your mama tells you anything’. It’s interesting that John would make such a reference toward Paul and Linda, while Yoko was constantly at John’s side. We can see in the Get Back documentary that Yoko is right next to John nearly every moment.
