I started hanggliding during that time in the Netherlands at the age of 15. we were reading the American magazines as well. All the pilots in the film were the heroes i was reading about
+IkarusFlying1 Visited you channel. Nice flight videos. Always wanted to get involved with Sailplanes. But never have been close enough to a center to make it convenient. Still flying today (Hang Gliding).
To fly there they made you fly from the 500 foot hill and land in the LZ without overshooting, no other credentials required…then you were good to go. My very first flight was there and I almost ended up in the picnic tables on the far side of the LZ, but that was good enough for them so I got to fly again! After that I looked up Mike Meyers over at Wills Wing since they were within 10 miles of home for me and that started that relationship. I think it was at this site that Bob left us filming a commercial when one of the choppers flew across his flight path ahead of him and when Bob went through there was still enough down air there that he went in too hard. If memory serves me correctly…Bob was our real life Hero then, much more to us than some astronaut somewhere. I don't know anyone who didn't know of him…you could reach out and touch him and he was as real as it gets. RIP Bob! All the best air to all you ole' Farts out there…and you younguns' too! charlie
Wow, what a blast from the past, my family flew at Escape Country for several years, great memories, I still have a Visor from the 1974 World Hang Gliding Championships we flew in. I flew a Seagull lll then. Its sad to go back to that area now, its all houses, but you can still see the 1500 take off point. We were the Soaring Solesbees back then. Great memories!
Nice job on the filming and the narration! I hoped I would be in here, but no! I blew myself out on the speed run and was the flight instructor at Escape Country! I learned a lot at this meet and grew from it. Thanks for the history. I think you got most of it right in terms of names, but I cannot add any more but my own Jeff Anderson
Very cool! I took over Fly Above All in 2012 from Chad Bastian, who took over from Ken DeRussy, glider #4. Fly Above All, as a HG school, started in 1974 so this would have been early in our history.
I flew the 6b in this event. Trip Mellinger was my mentor. As I remember the finals were judged on an "aerial ballet" set to music. Trip took third. Thanks for the post
You probably dont give a shit but does any of you know a method to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me
@Bronson Alec i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This appears to be a commercial production. The voice is not John Smith who was the main announcer at Escape Country. From where does this piece come? Is it a part of a longer possibly televised program? Thanks for posting it. Ken de Russy Glider #4
Hello, Ken. Mike Kelsey here and I am narrating. My brother did the VHS recording. No Sound, so I had too do a lot of work to get the help from the HG community to help identify each glider and the pilot of the glider. Got so much help from so many. Very Cool. This was a fun project. I enjoyed the years that I participated in the competition. Never placed well as the other pilots were simply much better than I.
