Also, about $3 goes out of your check to fund programs as a whole. It’s not like you can’t be on any programs if you’re working.
I think is healthy for kids to have responsibility in the family as long as parents do not take advantage. It helps them grow up to be responsible adults.

Grow your own veg and learn how to can (preserve) food. Grow food in the summer to harvest for the upcoming year. These are basic skills that should have been taught in Home Economics.
Not everyone has the time or money. I have a big vegie garden, but it's very time consuming. The only reason I am able to do it, is because I'm disabled and can't work. It helps with my mental health, and most of what I grow goes to the local food bank.
