Up until 11:40 I was trying to figure out if you were saying "boats," "goats," or "motes." Finally figured out it was "votes."
Imagine the variant wherein your resources are boats, goats, and (magical) motes.
lol, awesome
that got a genuine LOL from me :)
As much as I like SM titles like Viticulture, Scythe, and Wingspan, this doesn’t seem to have the attraction in looks or gameplay to make it to my collection. With shelf space getting smaller, I really need to be picky about games these days. Rahdo, thanks for the runthrough! We love your channel. 😀
Thanks Rahdo! I’ve been eagerly anticipating your run-through of this game since I first heard of it. It seems to me almost like a natural escalation of the central thesis of Viticulture, an early Stonemaier game. Both games feature worker placement with a focus on timing, but this game seems to take that idea to an extreme degree! I’m generally not a big fan of real-time strategy board games, but after your video this one certainly has my interest piqued.
Thanks for the video! I always appreciate seeing your 2-player play throughs since my wife & I typically play together. I'm also glad you showed the "timerless" method of play as I suspect we'll use that style most often.
Appreciate the quick rundown on the rules, about 10 minutes for the basics was pretty good I thought
I kinda dislike the graphic design. The main board looks both busy and sparse, if that makes any sense.
I get what you're saying. lots of icons, little actual art.
It isn't a deal breaker or anything, but I agree the graphic design of this one isn't as clean as say wingspan, scythe, viticulture, and other Stonemaier games.
Reminds me of The Magnificent - Lots of room for a theme to go through but nothing really there.
Did the Misprint on the board confuse you at first?
The production icons on the mats are different from the ones on the board in the relation to dot placement for colourblind players (yellow & brown).
I’d be interested to know if it was the same on your copy as well.
Thanks for the great review.
oh wow i didn't even notice the existence of those dots (not color blind here). that is unfortunate. i suspect color blind players have to make lots of modifications to their games to correct for oversights like this, but very much a bummer when the developer was actively trying to correct for these issues but goofed :(
Rahdo That’s why I have a lot of different coloured Sharpies lol
Still enjoying the game though!
the variant is actually more interesting than the realtime. The real time videos I've seen are Chaos with lots of mistakes and shouting.
yeah, i wouldn't call it a variant at all. it's a fully fleshed out mode which i'll definitely talk about at length in final thoughts later this month :)
If we get this game (pretty likely), I suspect my wife & I will play the turn-based method more often (although I'm sure we'll try both).
YES! I'm glad this was the first video I watched. The other videos with the real-time use of the sand timers showed me it wouldn't work with my partner and I, nor would my normal gaming group (will it ever not be quarantine???) enjoy this game.
I just came here to thank you for your shirt! :)
I'm sure it's a good game but the main board isn't selling the theme and looks like a bit of a mess.
I feel like playing this with 4 people would be absolutely insane. You all need to know the rules to not cheat and not know about it. The time element just seems 100% tacked on for a worker placement game.
Real time gameplay is interesing, but it seems that's about it. Without the real time aspect, its like a run of the mill, messy work replacement game. Art and board design is average tbh, and it even has less theme than Tapestry, which had theme pasted on (I do like and enjoy Tapestry and still have it in my collection). Good job on the runthrough though. Just wondering if the original Roman theme would have made more sense... with the votes and military actions.
I too am curious why they switched from the original Roman theme. It seems like that would have tied things together nicely. I still think it looks interesting but would love to see the original version for comparison.
Oh it used to have a Roman theme? That explains SO MUCH. A major faux pais on the production to change that to painfully generic fantasy.
Completely agree - I enjoyed the original theming on this
@@hudeduge9240 Yes, the designer originally presented this with a Roman theme.
I have this perception (and maybe be wrong on that) that Jamey dislikes historical "real" games. Even Scythe is set in a alaternative universe. Seems to me that he wants to avoid stay in some position that people can confuse the game with the view of the company - something like "if I do Puerto Rico, people will think that I'm racist or support slavery".
Very interesting real time game with variant rules for turn based gameplay. Thanks Rahdo for the great rundown as usual.
Not usually one to enjoy real time games, but this looks like it works really nicely, and with the fallback to a turn based structure I think I'm going to have to pick this one up.
I'm still a little confused by the 2p gameplay with the use of the white meeples. I'm usually not a fan of an automata-esque player, like 7 Wonders, it feels like games such as that should be considered a 3+ player count. But it didn't seem like this game there was much you had to pay attention for that "player". I hope you go over that in your final thoughts and I'm not sure how much you can say in the comments and I get that. I am just very curious if that's a turn off for how the game plays. Or if it can be used as a strategy. Thanks for another great video!
oh i don't see how anhyone who has a problem with 'dummy players' in games would be bothered by these. they have no ingame function, they're just the equivalent of having worker placement spots that have a 3+ on them in other games (where, you ignore the spot if you're playing a 2p game) :)
It's nice to have a much more solid idea of what the gameplay will look like.
I have always been impressed by Jamey's breadth of design offerings (even if he does not design all of his published games), and now feel very comfortable setting my FOMO at the side of the road regarding Pendulum. No doubt, this speaks to many players and will likely sell well (or sell out as Tapestry and Wingspan did), but the theme, graphic design and presence of sand timers don't speak to my preferences in gaming at this time. The fact that the timers are NOT essential for gameplay leaves me with the impression of their inclusion as more gimmicky than perhaps intended.
As always, thanks for posting your thoughts! 🖖
Thank you for playthrough, It's interesting to look how real time mode works after that.
This looks like a game that would be fun to play but not fun to watch. Thanks for the great playthrough. Much better to show it turn based unlike another video I watched.
My first impression is: This is definitely not a sand timer game, I know that Jamey hates phases but this game can use some of those. I cant imagine moving all the pieces in real time it would be a chaos.
I feel like one person is going be real good at watching the timers and will get stuck focusing on that and making poor choices. HUGE Stonmaier fan, have all their games, I'm not totally sure about this one. I like the worker placement mechanics and the grande is always nice; I just don't see myself playing in real time. The optional turn track is nice.
Fantastic game when played as a turn based one. Thanks for this option in this video!
At 6:10 you should add that you conquer a territory or if you haven’t gained it yet take the legendary token. You can only do 1 or the other though.
Thanks for the Run-through. I'll have to pass on this. This looks interesting but I was so interested in Tapestry and it fell short. Was fun for a couple of games and that was it for me. The last 2 games by Stonemaer didn't click with us but that's ok.
Who else pre-ordered the day it came out!!!
I was very fascinated by the real-time mechanism when they first announced this game. Unfortunatly, a part from that aspect, which I'm still not really sure if it's implemented well, the game doesn't feel particularly interesting; in the end it's just the classic, collect resources, take action, make VP. With a game like this I think a lot comes down to the cost, if it's a 35-40€ game it might be good enough of a buy just to try this new idea, but if it's 60+€ I don't think the game offers enough to justify the price. Let's wait and see, but, as always, great runthrought!
When you're playing as "Jen," do you alter your playstyle to match her actual playstyle more, or are you just trying to playing off of yourself in your own style?
my main focus is to try to ensure i follow 2 different sorts of strategies so show off as much of the game as possible. so that could be me copying something jen did, or something jen did might be what i assign to myself. it all flows out of the game which i set up randomly :)
@@rahdo That's what I suspected. Similar to what I try to do when learning a new game (that doesn't have a solo-mode)...with the difference being that my strategies aren't well-informed given that i'm just learning the game. ha. But ultimately, try to do what seems best for each player in the moment (with the strategy as a vague guide).
Look forward to seeing your final thoughts (since I rarely make it through entire playthroughs...I usually prefer just getting a sense of the game and feelings about the experience).
Wow this is an overwhelming looking game!
I think the original Roman theme would have made thematically much more sense than this generic fantasy one (votes, conquest, military...). This just doesn't seem to click.
Man do I love some SM games, absolutely love Viticulture with both Scythe and Wingspan being really great games I pull out a lot as well, but something about this one just seems so messy to me. I appreciate they are keeping some of the popular ideas that have made their previous games so successful (grande worker, asymmetrical powers, etc). Idk I wish it seemed better to me because I appreciate when designers try to do something really unique like this Timer euro game. But something just isn't working with this one.
not every game is going to work for everyone. this is a really unique one, and i can totally see it being a love or or hate it kind of thing :)
Is there a way for players to easily track which round they're in?
yeah, it's based on the council cards left in the deck. you're in round 1 or 2 if there's still black cards in the deck. you're in round 3 if there's red cards in the deck. you're in the last round if the deck is gone :)
*Potential Charterstone Spoilers* So I immediately noticed this was tied to Charterstone via the Forever King. Is it just in the same world or is this land actually the world we build in Charterstone? I couldn't quite tell if the story was meant to be a sequel or prequel. Regardless, I like the idea behind tying them together.
Timeless King. My bad. 🤦🏼♂️ Maybe they were brothers? Haha.
wow, i didn't make the connection, but i'm going to say yeah, there must be something there! :)
11:44 ”if I do a brown production” Is that an euphemism?
Do the debossed player boards hold the tokens as well as double layered player boards would?
nope. the player boards do have an interesting 'rough' texture to them that creates more friction than you normally find on these sorts of components, and that does keep the pieces from sliding as much as they otherwise might (while not impeding the player's ability to slide them purposefully)
@@rahdo okay, thanks 😊
Love your channel❤️! Do you know when this game will be released in Europe?
sorry to say all i now is pre-orders go live on aug 5th. you could probably ask publisher directly at stonemaiergames.com/about/contact/
@@rahdo thanks! What do you think is the best game for 3 - 5 players? (We are very good friends, so the game could be punishing or not that fair)
@@Luj8n sorry i'm not the best person to ask, since i play the majority of my games as 2p only :(
What happens, when you forget a worker after the timer switches and it switches again? Is it blocked again allthough it was just forgotten?
yup, it will be stuck there until the next flip unless you've got a special power to get it out. in the realtime game, you might purposefully flip a timer specifically to make one of your opponents workers get trapped, so it's wise to always free your workers first thing after a flip. this is all for the realtime game, of course. the turn based game doesn't really feature this same feature.
@@rahdo Thanks a lot! Nice shirt btw... best wishes from Germany!
Art, graphic design, and theme are a little off putting to me. It doesn’t look like the Stonemeier brand to me.
Rahdo! This turn based walkthrough has completely changed my view on this game. The other videos of this are frankly unbearable. Great job!
This looks very cool.
Thanks for the video
How does this scale with more players? :)
the board is 2 sided, so more worker placement spaces at higher player counts. but i've only played it 2p, so i can't say more
@@rahdo thanks for the fast reply. Two players it is 90% of the time. But I like to know the options anyway. 💪🏻😉
Jesus Christ. What a crazy mess)
Ульянов Дмитрий lol
Feels like a bloated Res Arcana with even less theme. I cannot locate the inspiration that made it collect the most votes ever at the Stonemaier open day.
I am intrigue. Looks fascinating!
One of the things I love about Scythe is the subtle assymetry of the player boards...this is a bit reminiscent with the assymetric score tracks.
Not to mention the intriguing use of real time mechanics...I will be super interested in seeing how that works.
Ha! Around the 45 minute mark I think you swapped whos workers were whos. These goofs definitely feel like they're mostly a product of trying to play two people at the same time and not something that will happen during a real game.
yup, that happens to me all the time, not just in realtime runthroughs (for instance, this is not a realtime runthrough, but demonstrating the turn based game, but my brain still fails from time to time) :)
The game looks very interesting from a casual perspective and even from a more competitive perspective as well. However I believe the game will be bashed of course for being SM and I also think your a-typical euro fan is going to find the real time aspect annoying.
yeah, i'm sure the very vocal minority of SM haters will be out in force, like always. and i hope folks don't dismiss the turn based rules, which are definitely not an afterthought and give the game a very tzolkin-ey sort of feel.
@@rahdo I am definitely not a SM hater, but this game is a mess. A jumbled mess of accidental cheating over and over again (when in real-time).
@@masterbridgemaster1 yes, accidental cheating is an issue in all real time games, it's inherently part of the genre, no doubt. i can say though that we've found it very easy to spot when each other makes mistakes in this game, since we're both almost always looking at the board and we have ample time to think, so "you can't put that there/you can't pick that up" are pretty quickly identified (at least, in our experience)
Yikes. After Wingspan, what's happened to Stonemeier?
they continued to make games :)
@@rahdo Games that put the focus on the victory point tracks rather than the gameplay or theme, in my opinion. Both this and Tapestry have a very thin veneer of theme to cover or even explain their relatively simplistic mechanical gameplay of moving up tracks to score points.
Damn, I got burned. Thank you.
Yeah I'm not feeling this one. Definitely going to wait it out a bit. My guess is that come holiday season it'll be selling on Amazon for 30-40% off whatever SM sets the MSRP at
Tapestry has dropped so much in price since its launch, this game will be exactly the same. There is nothing special about this which is so disappointing. SM fanboys will buy this regardless and that's totally cool SM has done an awesome job building that fan base up, but once the excitement dies down I think this will be quite forgettable
This will be a hard pass for me. This board makes me dizzy just looking at it.
well if you ever get a chance to look at it in real life, i'd recommend it, because i putting it in video makes it seem a lot busier than it does IRL, where we had no readability issues at all :)
