  • Remember when Dutch had that lovely Triumph T100?
Ever wondered if he misses it?
...Well although he loved his 2016 Triumph Thruxton Café Racer, he's been secretly hankering after something that looked like his original D&O Bonnie but with the benefits of that Triumph 1200 belter of an engine and the upgraded Ohlins suspension, so he let loose and re-imagined the 'Hoxton' with the help of the boys at Down & Out Motorcycles. The result is a hybrid between the Thruxton and the Bobber.
So, is he nuts, or is it The Nuts?
Check out why he did it, and how it turned out...
Thanks to Down and Out Motorcycles for delivering yet another stunning build!

There is so much scope to customise these stunning motorcycles, I love seeing the unique variations as a fellow owner. The seating position is one of the least favourable things about the model. People think Thruxtons are about the look but you need to feel comfortable on such a wonderful machine and if changing handlebars helps you enjoy it more then how can that be sacrilegious? They are pretty to look st but marvellous to ride.

@Archimedes I did this to mine before my Europe round tour and it was the best thing I've done to it yet. It still looks kick ass and I feel It's even better at cornering, not to mention the increase in comfort which is substantial. Would recommend this to anyone who love the old thrux but want a bit more usability out of it.

I like the idea and think this works really well. Love the small details that down and out go into with the wiring etc. I’ve heard that getting rid of the xpipe or bend in the exhaust looses quite a lot of the torque, have you noticed that with these pipes? Also what make are the slip-ons? I desperately need to make my Street Twin louder. Cheers.

    • @BikeShedMotoCo
      @BikeShedMotoCo  5 лет назад +1

The bike feels, and fuels, so differently that I can't feel a loss of torque or power, but on these open pipes it feels much rougher, and the sport mode feels more on/off than before, so we have probably compromised the fuel mix. However, the bike has lost so much weight it feels much faster, so I'm ok with losses on paper-charts if the whole package is as much fun to ride - or better. ... I do hope to take the bike up to Chris at X-Bikes at some point as he did a great job on my old twins, and on the deBolex Ducati.

The scorpion pipes are good, but the kink-in and back out, and if I was using those I'd mate them to some SC Project end cans. These pipes are full brushed S/S and come via D&O's sources, which they keep to themselves.

these pipes will pass MOT if they are not overly loud for the type of motorcycle, which is subjective but we don't have absolute DB limits.

It just puts me in mind of the days we used to drill holes in everything that could be drilled, (and one or two bits that couldnt/shouldn't)!
It saved as much weight as taking a leak to be honest.
    Eliminating unnecessary complexity?
    Maybe.
    Weight saving?
    Meh...........
Other than that, great looking bike, great option for the future, nice one.

    • @BikeShedMotoCo
      @BikeShedMotoCo  5 лет назад

I definitely saved a couple of dozen kilos on this bike. You can feel it in the box of parts removed, and you can really feel it moving the bike around the Bike Shed - on and off plinths, and around the arches. It now feels lighter than my stripped down street scrambler, whereas it used to take some proper 'hefting' to get it moving across a door frame or up a small step. ... I've swapped a double layer, double-linked, steel exhaust plus massive baffled end-can, complete with hugely heavy catalytic converter box that feel like a good 5 kilos alone, and now I have two single-skinned shorty pipes, unlinked, un-catted and un-baffled. ...and that's before you start counting up big heavy OEM fenders, tail/plate hangers, etc.

They're not a crime, but they con't conform to certain modern homologation standards. If I was very unlucky I might get a rectification order, which could mean retro fitting some baffles, but the law isn't really that bothered by small misdemeanours on modern bikes that are generally safe, new, and being ridden with tax, insurance and due care.

You talked about lightening the bike but never quite got around to telling us what it weighs.
So the $64,000 question is: how heavy is it? (I'm guessing 420-430lbs)
Me? I wish Triumph would produce a SuperLeggera model - with 100bhp and weighing no more than 350lbs max.

    • @BikeShedMotoCo

I haven't weighed the bike, (I don't have scales that big) but I have a big box of plastic and heavy metal parts that weighs at least 30kg, and the parts I have replaced them with weigh less than half - plus the bike feels much lighter to move around and to ride. ...It's a very easily noticeable difference.

Nice bike, but good luck seeing anything coming from behind without mirrors. I don’t get the “it’s got to be clean” look before safety. No mirrors and minimal lighting is not safe.

Hi Johnny, Very sensible advice, thank you for your concerns. I've been riding in London every day for about 30 years, mostly without mirrors, and I've been ok so far, using proper observation and life-savers, but I do currently use a mirror on my daily ride - which this bike is not. ... Despite the "smallness" of the design, my lighting is far from minimal with LEDS are the brighter than the OEM lighting. I agree that bright indicators are essential. When it comes to safety, we all need all the help we can get, but to be frank, riding a motorcycle is relatively unsafe, full stop. Keep it upright. Dutch.

Dutch. It wasn’t my intention to come off as a grump. If so I apologize. I like your channel and admire the builds you do and would love to visit the Shed someday. Keep safe. Cheers mate!

London City streets under 50-mph,.. err hmm
you meant to say under 20-mph, right?
I've also been speaking to Ohlins, but so far they haven't been kind enough to gift me any of their suspension products. Which is their loss really as I would love to say nice things about their blackout front USD forks to my army of 8-Insta followers.

may I ask what is up with the seat on the old T100? There is a piece of frame sticking out?? Quite unprofessional in my opinion.. don’t get why you think you’d get away with this kind of attention to detail

Do you mean the frame loop at the back of the bike, that goes beyond the seat? ...This is a styling choice, popular with brat-style and cafe racer customs. It retains the length of the bike, despite the seat being shorter.

or you might be looking at the numberplate hanger, with no plate, from the original PR photos, which do look odd in one or two photos.

Hey thanks for your response. Yes I meant the frame loop. Most (or actually all of the bikes) I see on this channel are built with high attention to detail. This frame loop looked like an unfinished one to me. But yeah, I think I just don’t get it.
This new “Hoxton” on the other hand looks just absolutely amazing and very finished so to say hehe. So big kudos!

Thanks, I love it more and more every time I have another ride on it. I can't believe it turns so well on those fat wheels. I'm overjoyed.
