Her face and eyes showed all the emotions without saying a single word during the movie. That is what I call a real actress, Rita Tushingham. O. Reed was superb in his performance, as always.

A splendid love story that started with harsh feelings. 1st time I saw it in mid- 70s', then in the late '90s & now today 2023. This film has its own charm. A dumb, deaf orphan girl sold by a home lady to a skin trader where she has a strange experience of life. On one occasion she left him/trader & came back home but here on her wedding day village girls praise her adventurous life in such a way that she prefers to go back. Indeed, a superb film with no word from actress, Rita.

Good points. She is not deaf, though. She can hear but not speak as she was traumatized by witnessing the massacre of her parents by Indians.

same here, dad and me, i thought i was younger, must have been 11. high adventure and been outdoorsman ever since.
i whistle the tune when in a good mood, much to daughters anoyance as she can only see the brashness of Jean, and not the purpose and intent of his song.

I watched this film in 1974, and it was the first time I watched a film by Oliver Reed. I was astonished by his performance and the strength of his presence to the point that I started following his works with passion. As for Rita Tushingham, she was another world that made you move away from your reality and caught your attention without effort. A film that will not be repeated. I consider it one of the strongest things cinema has presented.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this movie!!!!!! It is my absolute fave movie of all time!!!! Ollie Reed is smokin' hot in this flick. And he gives an outstanding performance as the wild, crazy, lonely trapper who deeply yearns for a loving relationship with his "bought" wife. It is through his accident that he is humbled, thus rendering him completely dependent upon her. And Rita Tushingham does a spectacular job portraying the traumatized orphaned mute woman who must face & conquer her fears. And in doing so she eventually falls for the trapper. Their on-screen chemistry is magical. They both rock this movie!!!!! Nothin' like a great love story!!!!!!

NOTE: Missing about 5 minutes in the middle when Jean escapes from wolves & sends Eve to neighbouring Indian village to get medical help, for his leg, which is a scary thing for her to do, considering her traumatic past. Right after Eve leaves the cabin at night in search of Jean, she bravely rescues him from the wolves and gets him back to the cabin, but when his foot fails to heal, Jean sends Eve on a mission to fetch and bring back a medicine man from the indian camp located several days journey away, which Eve reluctantly sets out to do, however when she gets there, the entire indian camp is deserted, so she returns back to the cabin alone, which is where the scene right after the wolves picks up at.

Women were second class citizens then, an up till their first Vote... If more men realised, one man, can get 800 women pregnant, from the time he got the first woman pregnant, till she had her baby..!! (Not funny !!!).....so, That says to me, if it weren't for women, there's no future generations!!!..More respect is needed...Don't take me wrong, there's heaps of real gentleman out there, truly awesome... Heaps of women have become staunch, usually through past abuse...Respect is treating someone else, like you'd like to be treated. Learning how to compromise, is a good foundation in any relationship.. A good message from this movie is ....Happiness does not come from a materialistic way of life, it comes from the simplicity of life itself , and, Attitude..

Chopped out the section where she finds him fighting off the dogs, sorry, wolves and they make it back to the cabin. Then she checks his serious leg wound and wraps it up.
He tells her she has to go find a Native village that can come and heal him. He is left alone with only a jug of water and some food he can reach. Then it continues on screen again.
These are not total spoilers as they were not even in the movie. Had been edited out.

I saw this movie in a theater in NYC when I was 4 or 5. The only thing I remember from that trip to NYC is this movie and an advertisement in Times Square of a giant can of deodorant that sprayed something into the air every several seconds!

LOVE THIS MOVIE, PARTICULARLY THE FIGHT SCENE, AS
THE TRAPPER FIGHTS FOR HIS LIFE AGAINST THE WOLVES.
THOSE WOLVES KNOW HOW TO FIGHT, AND DID NOT TAKA BACKWARD STEP. OLIVER REED WAS ENJOYING HIMSELF
TOO MUCH KILLING AND BEATING UP THE WOLVES. SOME
MORON REMOVED. THE BEST PART OF THE WOLF FIGHT, WHERE HE IS OUTSIDE THE. SHACK,. AND THE WOLVES ARE THROWING THEMSELVES AT THE. CABIN DOOR.
THIS FEEDBACK IS MY BELIEF ONLY WITHOUT PREJUDICE.
THIS REMINDS ME OF MY EXPERIENCES IN MELBOURNE
    OFF LEASH PARKS,
