Beyond Jupiter, beyond Saturn, communications take four hours to travel to and from Earth. In the impenetrable radio silence, utterly inexplicable and alone, an impossible thing softly calls.
Sci-Fi short film created using Blender 3D & Adobe After Effects CC.

Directed by Benedict Jewer
Featuring Huw Smallwood, Kjetil Muri Skarstein & Jack Ingram
Created for the Into Film: Into Space competition 2016.
I didn’t know the default cube in blender had such a devastating effect on the user.
I'm thinkin' the 160 down-votes are from folks traumatized by the default cube.
hahahaha
'Hal.......Hal.......tell me what this short sc-fi film is about'.................'I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."
ha! good one...
*Firebrand55*
👆👏👏👏😂
*"🎵Daisy, Daisy, give me🎶...no, don't touch that, Dave!"*
"My god, it's full of Space Odyssey references!"
That's what I kept thinking - it's full of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I was going to write something like that, but you did it first - and better.
ziiofswe hahahaha! Good one:)
Someone give Hal a nudge, he's singing to himself in his sleep again and we're off course, I mean, _really_ off course!
Not too sure what the meaning of the story is, but the graphics are spectacular.
Seems to be a tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Bunny Winslow Obviously...NASA is the most expensive Hollywood studio.
Nice for once to see a short film that _doesn't_ have a horror style ending, or a generally grim depressing ending. Those seem to be such a trope with short films. I don't know why.
The fact that most tended to end like that pretty much put me off checking these thing out.
Horror is easier, that's why.
One thing good/bad about these films, they end just when you're about to get some sort of answers and there's never a part 2.
Excellent. A perfect example of how you don't need to cram a storyline into anything, short or long. You only need enough to bring truth. The shots, edits, music and words, wonderful images had me transfixed and emotional. There is much skill and sensitivity here: to work with such economy yet show true pacing, timing, and give resolution to my emotions. I want to say it should be longer, but no, it's perfect.
Excellent visuals. I would love to see this story fully realized.
Then watch 2001: A Space Odyssey

I have, all three, plus the books, on several occasions, but I'd like to see this particular storyline continue to see how they do.
Beautiful. Like 2001 meets Contact. Great work.
Nothing less than a good visualization of the hypothesis according to which the aliens are actually the humans from alternate timeline.
This is amazing I have never seen anything come out of blender this beautiful!
Nice and deceptively simple concept. Leaves a lot to the imagination in a good way, not in an incomplete way.
Wow I think we found here someone with a huge talent...
A Space Odyssey in 360 seconds. Kudos!
Stunning. One of the very, very few S-F movies I've seen that I wish would go on and on.
I'm not sure what I just watched, but I liked it...
I love the Apollo mission refference. An awsum time in our history,
that may never be again.
Amazingly well done! Like others mention, 2001: A Space Odyssey. However for one who had actually read the book, it connects even the more, it so much feels like an attempt to capture some of what the end might have imagined to feel like if they had the technology to do it. If you like these, and might have missed it, the book is absolutely recommended!
All three books...'01, '10 and '13.
RIP Arthur!
Gorgeous, and a realistic and a realistic timeline to Saturn
The idea of going to Neptune is so interesting and exciting
Why stop there?
Both Voyagers, launched in the 70's, have already gone beyond our known system and are still operating and, as this film and Arthur C. Clarke's three Odyssey films and books portrayed, these _portals_ take them much further than Neptune...
_Much further!_ Lol.
@@billyandrew I did not really think I would find another Clarke fan here and resurface good memories, Going further and becoming a matter-free being with HAL is indeed a grander adventure. In this case I just thought it would be nice going to Neptunian system to stay for a while to fully appreciate its beauty. And there's a proposed body much farther than Neptune with a mass of many earths messing with TNOs' orbits, ready to be found, I really wonder what that planet looks like
It's nice that Apollo 8 is remembered. It was the emotional high point of the space program.
Yuri did okay, but wasn't given the acclaim by us in the West.
I think most the planet watched the moon orbit with even more watching the landing.
I kept expecting Armstrong to sink into the surface, as a part of me was secretly hoping it _was_ made of cheese! 😂
I think it's the graphics, that was spectacular
Astonishing. Just fascinating.
very beautiful imagination and perfect graphics...
The voice-over is Comm. Frank Borman of Apollo 8, Dec. 1968, doing that never-to-be-forgotten Christmas message from Moon orbit...
'This is Apollo 8, ( et seq ).......'..God bless all of you - all of you on the good Earth.' Other voices are James Lovell and William Anders.
What's not to like here ? Kubrick & Clarke in one and same homage.
I did enjoy watching, and have subscribed.
Thank you!
A nice "Space Odyssey 2001" inspired short, nicely done.
I would love to see a full length version of this film so i could get the story better :) nice job whoever made it.
Then watch 2001: A Space Odyssey
YES! We need a story now! Amazing!
I particularly enjoyed the 1969-era graphic depicting Atlas-157's insertion into orbit around Neptune. Very nostalgic.
I love this! As a Sci-Fi nerd this tickles all the right spots! This was beautifully shot! Please make more :D
More!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic short sci-fi - exactly what it should be. No more and no less. Well done!! Mitch from Australia.
Thanks Mitch!
@@BenJewer - You ought to be proud mate :) +1 Sub for the personal response.
ey dude, absolutly spectacular! gz!
This is a great job!
Beautiful graphics/visuals! But the story is nearly incomprehensible. I still enjoyed it. :)
Try the three Odysseys, books or films, by Arthur C. Clarke...2001, 2010 and 2013.
Great job, congrats from Spain
Spectacular FX! The story has been done tho... all we need is HAL. 🥴
*"Good afternoon... Tango Bango. I am a HAL 9000... computer."*
*I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois... on the 12th of January 1992.*
*My instructor was Mr. Langley... and he taught me to sing a song...if you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you."*
Altogether now _🎶Daisy, Daisy,🎵_ ...
❤❤❤WONDERFUL❤❤❤
This movie seems to be in footsteps of 2001 Space Odyssey. Very nice and opened ended.
Nice little nod to startrek, oblivion and 2001.
Awesome 👍👍👍
the Borg! Elysium! The Tet! It must be the VFX Artist's' Production Annex!
Keep up the good work. That's amazing! Wow! The cryptic meaning allowed your imagination to wander.
Why this film hasn't won the competition back in 2016?
Really nice. Shades of 2001, love your work...
Great piece of work - looking forward to seeing your next one.
Good special affects, vague story line
Runs along similar lines to *2001,* basically.
It's the Borg.
This has so much potential!
Whoa, heavy...
I want more please!!!
“ What’s in the Box ?”
god forgot to remove that cube after rendering the universe
Cool Job - very professional . The music match really good and create a nice atmosphere !
very nice ty
Awesome.
Cosmic.
Disappointed not to have a bit of _Dark side of the Moon_ played, when the triangles made their appearance. 😂
I sincerely hope there's a follow up to this?
2:35 - Hah, 'Ringworld'!
Very impressive visual journey to somewhere very bright and very far away.
This is really good. Love the concept and the render.
AMAZING
So that's where the Cube is
Damn, That was really well done!
I really like this short film, good job!
awesome indeed!
Amazing!
A spinning module on a ship, never because of inefficiencies. That close to Jupiter, never because of radiations
Final mission to Uranus
Graphics are amazing-- good film
GREAT!
outstanding work !!!
When you said 'short film', you really meant it, huh?!
Amazing, I hope you can make it a full featured film
It already was a full-featured film called "2001: A Space Odyssey". If he's trying to get people to invest in a larger story, he'll probably get sued for copyright infringement. If he's just trying to show his animation chops (which is what I suspect), then he did a good job. :)
Very cool! Nice work!
the TET From Oblibion (2:09) and the ELYSIUM Space Station (2:39)
The ATLAS Ship also is from Oblivion (i think)
I'll bet you meant Oblivion
That was a critical system error
Very good job!
Nice
My god it's full of stars.
Visually interesting...
Very Visual Indeed! :D
NO! It's a trap! It's a cloaked Borg Cube!
Resistance is futile....
awesome!!!11
loved it
Such quality! Subbed!
I'm jealous. I also make short sci-fi films... But as a complete beginner my graphics are nowhere near yours. Great stuff
Great film good job 👍👍
wow!
Bravo! Feel free to make this into a movie.
very good work...
Nice Work.
And God said, You’ve got three minutes.
But, did he think it was good?
2001 Abridged. And that's a good thing!
Am I right in thinking that there was a few live-action faces in this?
+Mike Futcher Cheers! Yup, a couple of live action shots composited into NASA photos!
Basically took the idea from 2001: A Space Odyssey but instead of the Monolith, they had a cube.
But it is different because monoliths were not portals to other galaxies or solar systems, but the building blocks of stars. They were deadly, as far as I can remember. :)
Not quite! Frank Bowman was transported somewhere in/with the pod by the monolith. In one of the books A.C. Clark mentions that the monoliths are more like a swiss army knife.
Guyz ... it's a nod (ie an _homage_ to Odyssey .. even l got that 😉
Very good indeed.
Well..😒 that's 3 minutes ii can't get back !
great movie. but why do you end it, where the plot actually starts?
Copyright, possibly, as it seems to be an homage to *2001.*
Someone has been reading 2001 and randavue with RANA.
Default blender cube. The movie.
Feeel space bro
