    No-Res looks identical to the open cell foam used to make foam speaker surrounds. My family has been involved in the speaker component manufacturing business since the 70's. They went through tons of that foam. I used it for a few DIY speaker builds and it really is fantastic stuff. Also, I love the work GR Research is doing and you can tell they really do care about the quality of what they offer.

    Just ordered an X LS Encore flat pack from Peter, and not only did he make the whole process extremely easy.... he was a pleasure to deal with. I also ordered the matched center channel that Danny offers for these speakers (X CS Encore/not on website) as this will be the foundation for my wife approved home theater system.

    About time you got into the DIY reviews. Being a lifelong DIYer myself, I am in the process of building a pair of X-MTM speakers that Danny has but isn't on the website currently that go down to 40Hz at -3dB so that I don't need to use a subwoofer, since I plan to use them just for music playback and the low E string of the 4 string bass guitar is at 41.2Hz. Since some music may use a 5 or more string bass with a low B string frequency of 30.9Hz , I plan to eventually design and build a open baffle sub. One great thing about DIY is that you can do whatever finish you like to the cabinets, myself I will paint the cabinets a gold metallic color with several layers of clearcoat for a finish just like I on some sports cars that I can't afford, but at least I can afford high end sound for about $500 the pair and stare at the beauty of those speakers.

      I bought 2 sets of completed speakers direct from GR Research. First I got the Carnegie Acoustics Davanti bookshelf speakers. Designed by Danny for some guy with marketing plans, he built them in China and the market changed. Danny helped him liquidate the Davanti speakers for $300 or $400. Happy with these I bought the completed L-XS Encore with all the upgrades. With supply chain issues it took 3 months. I moved the Davanti to the NAD M10 with a HSU subwoofer to my TV. And put the XLS to my Parasound P23 and preamp Bluesound Nodes. After a few days the XLS changed and now have more base than the Davanti with Subwoofer. But also more clarity and transparency. Maybe the amps? Both rooms are side by side and 12x24 feet. I can put them in the same BlueOS group and A B test them most everyday. I have a 3rd BlueOS zone in my home office.

    Dude! The X-Static kit is $400 and has 4 of the woofers with the tweeter and a 3 way crossover. I can also get a servo sub and still have $800 left in my pocket. I've built high end custom kitchen cabinets from raw lumber so boxes are child's play. I'm also an electrician and plumber so soldering is a cake walk. Everyone in the USA has someone near that can build a box for $100.

      so how did your x-ls encore build go from danny. Im a first timer who has never soldered anything, would use the $140 flat pack of wood to build the box. did you use the flat pack of wood to build the box? seems soldering would be scary for a rookie but easily done, since I would have it on a work table, easy to reach. I've stained wood before, but must buy clamps. clue, stuff to put the cabinet together. Please advise. a friend has a klipsch forte 3 he bought in 2018, saying they are too big for his room, wants $2200, shipped from az. too far from my home in NJ to see or hear them. but the $540 (all upgrade and flatpack) ls encore might be better. I have klipsch floorstanders rp5 from 1990, 1 tweeter, 8 inch mid, 12 inch 150w amp built is, and thiel c2.3 1 inch,3 inch, 8 inch from 1990., in 13 by 18 room

    I design my cabinets the same way. I use MDF in cased with oak and hard maple. But I design my own speakers and they are much bigger. I even use the fasteners but I have big rubber feet on them. But I use a industrial accustic damping gel adhesive instead of wood glue. I have built them with MDF alone and listened to them and then I applied the maple and I can hear a big difference.

      @@Newrecordday2013 LOL.... Yeah I got a pair of X-LS Classics for $125 with the bolt on stands AV123 used to sell from a guy and never really knew much about them. Started down the rabbit hole and discovered Skiingninja.com. Sean used to work with Danny on crossover designs (not 100% sure on this) and mentioned I can mod these to make them even better. So working with Sean, he gave me images of the Encore crossovers and what values I would need to buy, NoRez cut sheet with measurements, etc. Basically everything I need. I then contacted Danny and bugged him and eventually everything got delivered to my door sans the tube connectors(was on a tight budget at the time) and replacement drivers. Life took over and 3-4 years and I still need to finish my upgrades. I do want to buy a new set of drivers so I can give all my existing internals and drivers to a friend and then he can build his own cabinet and have a great set of speakers!!! Distortion measurements have no industry standard and no accuracy taken outside of an anechoic chamber. Distortion measurements also have little correlation to how something sounds. It could highlight a problem if one existed, but those same problems can be seen in other measurements as well. 6:29 - what does the rounded frame edge have to do with whether the woofer is countersunk or not? Countersinking has little to nothing to do with performance. Actually the rounded front edge just means the woofers should only be front mounted.

    • @cup_and_cone
      @cup_and_cone Год назад

      Countersinking the woofer means you have to groove out the front panel, which makes it thinner, and thus becomes potentially a point of resonance. The fact these taper to nothing mean you don't need to do that, and it also has the added advantage of keeping the transition smooth as you move away from the cone...which helps any weird refractions.

    That is one of the cheapest Chinese woofers I’ve ever seen. Are they even made of iron? Close the doors, or else the woofer will blow out of your hands. It may sound ok, but I would take a nice Seas, Vifa or Scan Speak driver.

You appear to be addicted to the “perfect sound”….. one can enjoy music without spending $5-$20K … $2,500 gets you plenty, assuming you know where to place your speakers and how to treat your room. You did a good job on those subjects.

    • @dannyrichie9743

      The X-LS Encore can easily be compared to the Usher BE-718 that won awards at every magazine. And I am pretty sure on that one. I designed the crossovers in the Usher BE-718's also. So they are both my work.
      The NX Studio Monitor is on another level. It is more of a cost no object monitor design.

    lol those tweeters have so much distortion and the woofers are pretending to have phase plugs. the tweeters are hot trash, which is ironic because Peerless also makes some really good CHEAP tweeters too. i love your content but Danny's opinion ignores measurements (even though he measures the crap out of price point competition) and product referencing of newer designs because he can't get past nostalgia and snake oil and adventure into something outside of his personal opinion. Sure old designs are fine, but at cost there is MUCH MUCH MUCH better sounding parts out there.

My products have been in every magazine online and in print and won all of their highest awards. I have exhibited at all of the shows and won the highest show awards as well. I've also designed every type of speaker there is. Few people in the industry have the experience that I have. You better go do your homework.

      @@dannyrichie9743 I have literally seen you post measurements to trash rival brands and those measurements are your room acoustic flaws. Every single speaker you measure has dips and peaks in the same places. And then you go to correct them because the original designer quote didn't take the time. I understand you want to defend your product but don't continuously crap on other people's designs. The fact that you have to put down the competition to make yours better shows what kind of business man you are

    • @dannyrichie9743
      @dannyrichie9743 Год назад

      @@djfirestormx That is incorrect. I have never posted a room response or any measurement that contains room reflections. We use a gated time window that allows us to get the same frequency response that we would also get when we measured that same speaker in our anechoic chamber. Yes we had an anechoic chamber at our last location. What you see in the measurements are exactly how the speaker measures (no room reflections), and my measurements are and have been confirmed by others including JA at Stereophile.
      And the kind of business man I am is the kind that tells the truth. What I show regarding any speaker is exactly how it is.

    Beautiful, but having built speakers with real solid wood baffles, not laminated to MDF I wouldn't recommend it. Not nearly as stable as MDF in a home environment that has central heating (like UK) as they can swell and shrink and crack even at that thickness. That said, gorgeous cabinetry.
