    When I think of Reliability, I'm most concerned about the likely hood of X vehicle having me or my family stuck on the side of the road. Buttons and switches and doors and clunks and rattles are minor issues that seem to be more considered in "reliability" tests now days. Because a Bluetooth connection drops from time to time should not count against actual reliability. IMO. However listing those details are still appreciated.

    • @davidm5707
      @davidm5707 4 года назад +2

      I thought they had said a while ago that they were taking those things out of reliability and adding a category called Usability just so as to focus on what you and I consider reliability.

    • @kenhoward3512
      @kenhoward3512 4 года назад +1

      There's virtually nothing sold today that leaves you "stranded by the roadside" anymore. But, if an issue causes me to have to leave my car at the dealer, again-and-again, with what should be fixed under warranty - but repeatedly doesn't get fixed (in my experience) - calling it a "reliability" issue seems like a useful warning to me.

    • @davidmccarthy6061
      @davidmccarthy6061 4 года назад

      Perhaps they should include buttons and software since that is now 80% of a car's functionality, especially the first couple years of ownership. Tech is the new trim level and for me reliability is not having to drop the car off for one or more days for repair of any kind. Obviously a turbo failure at 15K miles is bad and should count but even some small things effect daily livability with the vehicle.

    I think "innovative" shifters falls into my category of things I never felt needed "improving". A traditional shifter at least gives you tactile feedback as to what you are doing with it, opposed to hitting a button. I didn't have to look at my shifter to know I had put it in reverse, or drive.

    I’d like to see electric vehicles that are large and wouldn’t mind if they traded acceleration in the seven second range if it meant that it would deliver six or seven hundred miles of range between charges. We went small due to gas mileage and emissions and without those as concerns we can go back to what we’ve always done best and also be comfortable. Shifters on the steering column would be nice too. You don’t need to move your hand as far when you park your car when you get home. I realized this after driving a pickup for six years with a column shifter and bought an SUV with a floor shifter, got home and thought “Oh now I have to move my hand now!”
    I never thought I’d think like an old guy after years of driving a standard shift.

    I appreciate that you're pushing AEB since NHTSA won't mandate it.
    Given AAA's research that lane centering/dynamic cruise control may actually reduce driver vigilance and the NTSB report on Tesla autopilot contributing to fatal accidents, I wish you would also consider how well vehicles with partial autonomy keep driver attention.
    For example, Subaru/Cadillac have driver monitoring cameras. Toyota forces you to use your mirrors even with blind spot monitoring. If there's not a design feature like this, partial autonomy systems should result in negative points.

    My biggest gripe with CR and pretty much all other reviewers is their inability to function in a car without having a huge mechanical lever to change gears like they're in a steam locomotive. Y'all need to get over it. I'm older than these hosts and all the other staffers I've seen to date and I am able to push a button to select reverse. You make it sound like you drive along the highway and need to suddenly put the car in park or reverse without looking. Nobody does that! The only thing you really do in a car without even a glance is using muscle memory to change the volume on the radio. You should film yourself in a 1980 minivan and tell us it is the pinnacle of automotive engineering. I love the shifter in my Bolt EV (which this episode showed) and it takes no extra brainpower to select the mode I need, and I'm already stopped and looking around so I don't hit another car or human. I won't miss the huge center console that hides all the linkage when the space can be given to me. But I'm sure your predecessors complained about the Model A not having a leather harness to hold onto and stirrups for your feet.

    Electronic shifting is necessary for all of the automated features where the vehicle needs to move itself in and out of gear... so I understand the need to move away from mechanical shifting. But maybe that's not a license to remove the shifter itself? Are there vehicles with shift by wire or are they all still mechanical?
    Also kudos on pulling away from luxury and size categories - this has been getting more and more true over time and it hurts some of the most innovative vehicles and companies when they're ignored as comparisons to fancier rivals.

    • @carljaekle
      @carljaekle 4 года назад +1

      The automatic transmission in a new car is controlled by a computer. When you move the shifter you are signaling the computer what you want. The computer activates the components inside the transmission needed to give you the appropriate gear. So we are now free to use buttons, if we want.

Some touch screens are good, and some are bad, but they're all better than a ton of single function buttons. Some push button shifters are good, and some are bad, but are any really better than a mechanical shifter? That's my point, not some abject fear of the new or unknown.

      55,000 miles on the over engineered 2017 Volt, and still very reliable. Operating over 80% on electricity alone with the engine hitching a ride as dead weight. We saw a 25-35 % winter range drop in Minnesota over the EPA range. We only saw a 40% drop once, and that was during the polar vortex with -25F temps. They make for incredible winter cars....they always start, the heat is immediate, and the traction is great.
      We're now living with the Kia e-Niro in the mild Pacific Northwest, range drop is hardly noticeable as we're still beating the EPA range figures with temps between 25-45F. The Heat pump heating system most definitely helps with heating energy efficiency. We regularly seeing estimated ranges between 250-270 miles, above the EPA figure, during the winters here. My commute is 140 miles round trip at times, I can comfortably leave the E-Niro unplugged for weeks and still come home with enough range to complete my drive home with over 80 miles of range left, after driving 140 miles, and that's with charging up to only 90% before the start of the commute. We only charge up to 100% for longer weekend outings for battery care.
      We have yet to use the equipped DC fast charging capability, there are plenty along interstate 5 and around the populated areas. There are few, none, on the Coast. Tesla has that area covered well, nothing yet for the other manufacturers. We haven't had a need to use fast charging with the range capability with the vehicle, but will most likely give it a go with trips into the Cascades.
      Performance is superior to the gasoline variants, the Niro is a mid 6 second 0-60 car. I can literally be brisk with all accelerations and still beat the EPA range figures. Driving over 65 MPH continuously will drop the range a bit, one RUclipsr managed 190 miles at 75 MPH continuous.

      We lived with a Volt in Minnesota. The car still managed 35-45 miles with those temps, EPA is 53 miles or similar. The trick is the leave it plugged in and remote start on demand with the phone or scheduling departure times on the phone for auto schedule pre-heating. Heating up a cold soaked interior is going to require an incredible amount of energy, best use grid power for the task instead of using the stored energy in the car. Doesn't matter if it's a house or plane, the energy require to heat a cold soaked surface and volume will be intensive. We never noticed this in cars previously as 80% of each gallon of gasoline is wasted as heat anyway, engineers simply tapped into the wasted heat... assuming the engine finally warms up after idling for 15 minutes, or longer.

      Kind of off subject, but I'm sitting in the e-Niro while commenting. The car is sitting "idle" no heat or A/C on. Idle in this vehicle is 250 watt hours. Or 250 watts continuous. I found some figures for the idle fuel consumption of a 2L 4 cylinder car. 0.3 of a gallon per hour while idling, just turning the engine and running the basics electronics, over 10,000 watt hours worth of gasoline energy. Even on the low end figure of 0.1 gallon per hour manages 3,500 watt hours.
      Off subject a bit, but impressive nonetheless.
