      @jenniferPhelps Trying to fully understand, as I have seen Orwell interpreted multiple ways. To me, Orwell's writings are a critique of the Soviet structure under Stalin, perhaps Putin, and "to me" equate to Donald Trump ... and
      Totalitarianism ... I hope that was a warning against Totalianarism (Putin, Trump, DeSantis, Netanyahu etc.)

    Hey Jenna
    Great update - Thank you!
    Yep lost all my cukes last year from wilt due to beetles...fingers crossed so far this year all good.
    And Yes I discovered the same issue with the plastic rabbit proof fencing...they chew through it with vigor! I amused one of my neighbour's this morning chasing a bunny round and round the garden beating on my harvesting pan to scare him. Then I noticed someone laughing at me...my neighbour and good friend Terry.
    It gets even better when I am chasing down cabbage moths with an old tennis racket.
    Seems like I have found a purpose in life - entertainment for the neighbour's! Glad it brings a smile for them....😁
    Thanks again and have a great day!
    Mike 🇨🇦🍁

    To address your problem with cucumber beetles, take Habanero Peppers and reduce them to a thin purée. Use this as a base for an organic insecticide - you can also add other plants that have an insecticidal effect. Add some vegetable oil or dish soap to help the insecticide adhere to the plants. Do not spray on flowers or buds. This worked well for me.

    Surround WP kaolin clay has been very effective for cucumber pests for me here in north east Ohio. Just mix in a sprayer and keep it applied to the plants and the soil adjacent to the stem.
    This along with a trap crop outside of the garden may help you out.

    Great video! FYI, do your research on adding sand to clay. Sand, clay, and water are the ingredients for concrete. People use this combination to make cob for earthen houses.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, Jennifer. I actually advise against adding sand in the video I mentioned (the improving clay soil video) for this exact reason! I was shocked by the number of folks who said I was wrong. I have learned that there are different types of sand, and while you definitely don't want to be adding 'playground' sand to your soil, there are some types that might be ok... I'm dubious, but I just have to sate my curiosity. So I'm going to try to get a hold of 'horticultural' sand. We'll see how it goes. Worst case scenario, I'm only adding it to a small strip of my soil!

    • @Beaguins
      @Beaguins 2 года назад

      Concrete needs lime and cob needs a binder like straw. Some people really do have success adding sand to clay to make softer soil

      Nice! It's awesome how truly cold hard some of these veggie are. I've had strawberry spinach on my 'wish' list for a long time, but have yet to grow it. Is it tasty... and how do you like to prepare it?

    • @Hosemastenbrook
      @Hosemastenbrook 3 года назад +1

      @@GrowfullywithJenna it’s surprisingly tasty. I just eat the berries raw. When they’re deep red, almost purple, straddle the stalk at the base with your forefinger and middle finger, grasp gently and slide your hand to the tip. They’ll all pop off into your hand. They taste like sweet, earthy spinach. Maybe spinach/strawberry/beet is the best way to describe it. The leaves can be used any way you would use spinach. Wilted in butter and garlic or fresh in a salad.

      I'm trying the string system with the plastic clips and they are to much to full with a experience with cement fence and as you advise not doing strings next year but either cattle panels or the cement and the cattle panels will outlast the cement panels.
      Thanks for the teaching, And" Hanging High " video of working with the arch cattle panels next?

      @@johnjude2685 I'm not familiar with cement panels, but I was definitely not a fan of the string when I tried it. The cattle panels are much easier. I'm hoping to do a whole tunnel of cattle panel arches behind the garden this year- so hopefully I can get that shot! Take care!

I also live in the same zone as you and have been looking for youtube gardeners that live in the same zone as me and I found you. Ive watched many videos over the years of gardeners in different zones and even though their knowledge is wonderful its not the same as what is needed for our zone with our winters and frost dates, and even pest/disease issues. It's looking amazing! The soil amendments experiment will be interesting. I'm in the same boat with clay here in the pacific northwest. My tomatoes are catching up to yours even tho I started them as seed a month later than you. June started cooler than late May with plenty of cold rain (lost 2 melon plants and 2 cucumbers to rot) then ended with 2 days of all time record highs. Officially we got to 102 and then 115 for two days after that! My blueberries lost leaves and the bulk of the fruit shriveled up. Everything else ok. Remaining melons are loving it as I was sure to water them many times during the heat of the day. The neighbors 4 year old fig tree is also very happy and looks to produce about a gallon of fruit. All in all looks promising this year!

    I’ve been plagued with 3-lined potato beetles (basically cucumber beetles) and I started spraying with Monterey Garden Insect Spray. It knocked them back really well. I’ll still see one or two but they were absolutely infested before I started spraying. And their little gooey booger larvae that was all over the place has disappeared.

    just incredible. such a lovely garden you have. :) And it's so obvious how much you love plants for their own sake - some gardeners are all about food production or beauty, but you are with the plants, touching them like pets. I do that, too. :) I actually tried to take a video of my garden at lunch today and my phone didn't record the very middle of it! haha. That's ok - it doesn't hold a candle to yours. Thank you for the info on the Mexican marigold! It was labeled Mexican tarragon when I picked up the start at Lowe's. I had never heard of Mexican tarragon, so I thought I'd give it a try. But the way you describe the flowers, lets me know that it's definitely the Mexican marigold. I wonder if it's supposed to have the same pest deterrent properties. Because I far prefer the smell and look of it to traditional marigolds. Plus it really does taste like French tarragon (imo). I have limited space in my current garden, and last year the marigolds were a smelly pain in the neck! They spread so massively in my small raised beds and took up precious real estate that I could have used for food. So this year I didn't plant any. I did notice an increase in slugs and snails in the spring and a slight decrease in bumble bees currently. So I would be game to plant small pots of them outside of the raised beds if needed, next year. But if this Mexican marigold can do the same job, I'd MUCH rather plant small sections of that.
    Also, have you preserved any of your toothache plants before? If so, did they retain their anesthetic properties when dried? I am growing them for the first time this year, and I need to start to harvest them. They're growing out of the pots where I planted them. But I don't have a medicinal need for them right now, thankfully. I'm also not sure if I should save the leaves and the flowers 🤔. Sorry for so many questions. I truly love your videos and I trust your opinions. Thanks 🙂.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 года назад

      You're welcome- I personally have not noticed if it does or does not repel pests, but I did come across some really interesting info here: www.naturalmedicinalherbs.net/herbs/t/tagetes-lucida=mexican-tarragon.php which claims "Secretions from the roots of growing plants have an insecticidal effect on the soil, effective against nematodes and to some extent against keeled slugs, they also have an effect against some persistent weeds such as couch grass. These secretions are produced about 3 - 4 months after sowing. The growing plant also has a repellent effect on various insect pests such as the asparagus beetle and bean weevil". I've not had a chance to verify this, but if true, could be quite useful!
      I preserved the buds of my toothache plants last year- I filled a glass jar and covered them in vodka- both the liquid tincture and the buds themselves can be used. I've not tried preserving the leaves. The buds can also be dried and used later for tea & such.
      Don't be sorry for the questions... keep them coming!! Take care!
