  • #argentina #travel #travelvlog Dominica and I are in Buenos Aires, Argentina and today we are discussing the current state of getting money from the ATM, Western Union, Avenida Florida, the money exchangers, banks, and more and what the exchange rates are, understanding the dollar blue / blue dollar and how you might use US Dollars in cash, or BitCoin when coming to Argentina. If you are going to spend time in Argentina, understanding the currency and the exhcange and their #inflation or hyperinflation are critical to making your time affordable.

    If you transfer money to your self using western union you will always get best exchange rate very close to dollar Blue exchange. It is not illegal to exchange money, but it is not guaranty 100 % the money is good. Also if you pay with a foreign visa card you will also get a financial exchange rate of about 20% better than the official rate, Mastercard also gives same financial rate but it is confusing as they will give you a rebate for the difference after 3 or 4 days after purchase time

    Interesting video. I like numbers. By the way, 20 pesos would work out to about two cents American. 20/1000 = 0.02. You just moved the decimal .3 places to the left.
    Interesting, too, to learn that they prefer $100 bills. When I have traveled in Southeast Asia, they don’t want $100 bills because they are the most often counterfeited. I always brought $50 bills and made sure they had absolutely no blemishes on them, otherwise they would be rejected.
    I have been on the Avenida Florida. Back in 2007, it was the main pedestrian shopping mall. Back then the exchange rate was three pesos to the dollar. By the sounds of it, though, the price of a steak dinner for two in US dollars really hasn’t changed much.
    One more thing… Your wife’s Spanish pronunciation is excellent. I’ll leave it at that.

      Same here in Nicaragua, $20 used easily, $100 almost never allowed.

    When I traveled in Bolivia it was worse..we exchanged 800 dolars and the first street buyer could only do 500..then the second did the other 300.we went to buy a airline ticket and the pile of money no exaggerating was about 20 inches by 10 high..it took the agent 40 minutes to count it and as we waited ANOTHER GUY with a shopping bag full of cash came in lol this was about 37 years ago

    No hace falta ir a la calle Florida para cambiar dólares. En todos los barrios hay lugares donde se puede hacer en locales que son Casas de cambio, Joyerias o Turismo.

      I can't imagine robbing a bank there. You would need to arrive in a convoy of semi-tractor trailers.

      In some ways, it makes cash very safe to carry. No one can be bothered to streal it!

    Some Western Unions exchange USD at a pretty good rate (maybe not as good as the ones in Calle Florida, but really similar). You should be able to find them in your area pretty easily, they are all over the city.

      WU uses the Blue Rate (as far as I know).

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  9 дней назад

      They seem to have a good rate, but not the blue rate. Blue is about 1300, WU is about 1200, Bank. is about 950.

    Did you take your Argentinian money back home? It's nice to play poker with such money. It's so cool to say ... "I'll raise you 10,000". Playing poker with 1,000,000 bills is the best (I'll raise you 10,000,000).

    Scott, with the continuing Argentine monetary crisis, is obtaining residency and/or citizenship as a retire a good idea.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  5 дней назад

      Well this might be taking it too far but.... given the ongoing crisis, doesn't it make it a great time to take advantage of the situation? As a retiree, the crisis only benefits you.
      The fear is the crisis ending, from a retirement perspective.
      It's similar to the housing crisis in Nicaragua. Super unfortunate and we want it to end. But as an expat, it only benefits me personally. There's no negative for me. What aspect of the Argentinian situation would give pause for retirement or citizenship? Obviously, the ATM situation is annoying and you might need to do some creative bank transfers. But beyond that, the actual crisis is exactly what retirees would want.
      And in reality, the new president SEEMS to be on a good track towards ending the crisis (over a period of years.) But so far, he's attempts to fix things have not backfired. It's a gamble, but the crisis doesn't appear to be an irreversible thing.

      Jaja, well no, she doesn't speak Italian, I do. That one has always been funny. She picked up Spanish faster than me. But I learned Italian and she didn't. WHen we lived in Italy, I had to do all the talking.

    Mrs Miller appears calm and thoughtful...however she's giving you a lot of side eye bud...she's inwardly laughing when you say you have a hard time getting cash. Notice her comment about not getting enough cash out of an ATM in Nica?!?! She simply goes to another machine and gets more...
    I think Mrs Miller is much better at getting her little mitts on cash than you are Scott...
    I did notice she's not offering to help you get money to spend...she's clearly too intelligent to let you spend the money and I suspect she's FAR more competent at spending money.
    She's also beautiful and you married up :)
    In Argentina, you're better off paying with cards. And always bring your beautiful better half when shopping so you don't get overcharged...

      We were trying to get cash because 1) most affordable places don't accept cards and 2) when using cards you pay 30-50% more because the cash exchange penalty is 30%, and many places give 10-20% cash discounts. So the cumulative savings is insane. You want to avoid cards if at all possible.
