Thank you for laying this out so simply. I first watched this video over almost a year ago. After long consideration with studies of manuscript traditions and translation philosophy, I now read the KJV daily and I am blessed for it. Although it took a while for me to adjust, it forced me to carry out word studies and now scripture memorisation is much easier. Thank you again pastor Doug.

Who did it right?
The underlying Greek text of the AV KJV, is by far the superior underlying Greek text, being in agreement with the majority of copies ever made or discovered. The reliability of a copy should not be determined by its age, anymore than a witnesses testimony in a court of law should be determined by the age of the witness. Especially when that witness's testimony disagrees with the overabundance of the majority of witnesses, whose testimony harmonizes with one another's.
this is not right though. what do you mean by majority of copies ever made ? the Greek text the KJV is based on, called Textus Receptus, was compiled somewhere around the 16th or 17th century, and had as few as 6 manuscripts and as many as 40, from the sources i’ve heard. the earliest Greek manuscript the compilers of the Textus Receptus had access to was written in the 10th century 900ad, 800 years after the original was written. The new Greek compiled texts, mainly Nestle Aland and the UBS are compiled based on the now roughly 5000 manuscripts that we have access to, with the earliest dating back to only about 50 years after the original texts were written, as well as complete new testaments by the 4th century. I could understand if you were arguing for Byzantine manuscript superiority over the majority Alexandrian, and I think Syriac as well, manuscripts. but if you are saying that - assuming you are talking about the Greek compiled text called “Textus Receptus”- that the KJV is most accurate compared to the Textus Receptus - well of course it would be, since the KJV was written from the Textus Receptus. Otherwise, if you’re not using the Textus Receptus Greek text - are you comparing the newer Greek compiled texts to paraphrased translations such as the NIV and NLT, and then contrasting between the KJV? because if you are comparing paraphrase translations to the literal translation of the KJV, you are essentially comparing apples to oranges. The common argument for KJV-onlyists isn’t majority of manuscript and historical tradition, it is Byzantine manuscript superiority
also it isn’t the same as a witness’ testimony being determined by their age. What we are arguing for is the credibility of a witness based on the length of time from the incident and their relation to the incident relative to their position in time from the incident. So you would much rather prefer to have an early 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd account witness who was alive when the incident occurred, or is at the least second generation, rather than only have a witness who lived 800 years later and is going off of information that has been passed down 100s of times. By all means, if all that we have is 800 years later and we can faithfully trust that account based on historical context, studies, and surrounding information, then it should be considered trustworthy, but if we have much earlier sources that are corroborated by commentaries from the same time period, then why should we deny them to their rightful place?
I agree with Doug Wilson. KJV is a different Bible from the others. Just compare the translations. I am not a KJV only. But believe it is the best English translation. If it wasn’t for copyright laws, modern versions would look different. They did not choose the best words. They choose words that allowed the publishers to own copyrights.

I agree. I do not use the King James any longer. At this point in life, it is to difficult to try and interpret what it says. I simply do not speak that version of English.

While I disagree with Mr. Wilson on the Byzantine family being more reliable, I find the other points he made to be quite compelling and ones I’ve not heard from a KJV only type.
I see your point, and it lines up with your philosophy of also wanting to return to imposing Christian law on non believers. That said, I disagree because the "church" in the public eye doesn't represent the true church of Christ. Just because the people that wrote the KJV identified as Christians doesn't mean we should give them any special treatment or authority in what they do. From the small research I have done I thought that the manuscript tradition for the KJV was weaker, but I still have a lot to learn on that element so I'll give it to you. I've been mostly studying from the ESV as of late, but I always like to compare versions whenever anything seems remotely unclear to make sure that I don't misinterpret based on translation alone.
KJV for me just feels more authoritative and formal and meaningful. I think because I struggled with it so much as a kid while also having reverence for it.

@@1Sackettgirl if I remember the video correctly, he didn't like copyright and the business driven translations. The WEB doesn't have either "issue". In those regards, the NKJV is just like other translations. But it is based on a similar text to the majority text, so you're right in pointing that out. I personally think the comprehension factor of the KJV isn't worth the benefits Doug pointed out but that's just me.

The 3rd point is a great point. The WEB is actually a non-copyrighted modern and literal translation and I believe it's based on the same/similiar manuscript family as the KJV. The NET Bible is copyrighted but provided free
Pastor, you might want to check out the Simplified King James Version (SKJV) from Barbour Publishing. It is in contemporary English. It is technically not a new translation, but a revision of the KJV, so still based on the same manuscripts. So far from my studies of it, it seems closer to the KJV than the NKJV.. Unfortunately it is under copyright .
The NKJV checks all the boxes for him except that the copyright is owned by Thomas Nelson Pubs....and for that reason ALONE he does not use the NKJV? Not a good reason not to use it,

I call kjv "original intent", especially in this age of revisionist history. Before all of this revisionism to history, America went by the Geneva and Kjv Bible, as they were from the same manuscripts. Now, there is much more fracturing happening in the western church and everybody has a different translation. That's okay, but there needs to be where they go back to a word for word translation tether than a thought for thought translation.

I often use the English Study Bible which is a revision of the Authorized Version, known popularly as the King James Version. This revision was done with constant reference to the same Hebrew and Greek manuscripts that the translators of the KJV used. It sounds like it is what Doug Wilson is looking for. I respect Doug greatly and follow his ministry and content he publishes. I will agree with his last point. It is too bad that our contemporary Bible translations are owned and controlled by corporate interests. My Bible translations of choice are the NASB 95, LSB NT 2021, ESV, CSB and of course the KJV. However I am a critical text advocate. I am not sure of the ownership/copyright status of the NET Bible. I have heard it is open and free and have heard otherwise from those I trust.

Why? What do YOU find lacking in the KJV? The NKJV has a few differing editions. I must question if you really believe "(ALL) scripture is given by inspiration of God" Remember Jesus said "but the WORDS I SPEAK they will judge you in the final day" Are you really okay with men changing (the words) by which we will all be judged in the last day?
This is earnest and sincere. But absolutely incorrect in a lot of ways. To say that newer versions are devoid of the church involvement and to imply it’s all corporations and corrupt has no basis. The NASB for example was absolutely formulated with an ecumenical, Christian run organization. Created by Christian scholars that are masters in Greek Hebrew and Aramaic. We know more about ancient Hebrew and Greek today than they did in the 1600s. King James had given directives on certain things. We know this so it’s kind of funny how newer Christian organizations are supposed to be more corrupted than literally a king/government directive? To say that the manuscript tradition is more reliable is another blunder. Newer translations are again dealing with more information, higher scholars, more ecumenical, many more manuscripts and earlier manuscripts than the KJV. No and I mean absolutely no doctrinal differences are found in kjv or any of the reliable newer versions. I love the kjv, I was raised on it and still quote the kjv more often. But to say that you have to use it because the nasb2020 is lesser in any way, is absurd. If anything I trust its accuracy to the original Greek much more.

Protestant King James the 1st authorized and financed scholars who knew Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, and other relative languages to compile the most accurate translation of the Holy Scriptures in an English translation for the common man in his kingdom. Back then the average Bible was chained to the pulpits of the local Church buildings. There were scarce copies back then and a lot were in Latin. The Catholics hated King James for that and because the King was Protestant. Roman Catholic Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate the King and his court by using barrels of gun powder below the floor of the King's court to blow them up. But he was caught and executed.
@@MegaGeorge1948 You have to understand the context of the times. A Bible was chained to the pulpit because, prior to the printing press, every Bible was produced by hand, usually by Monks. In addition most ordinary people could neither read or write. However, in 1582 an English version of the Bible was printed by The Catholic Church, called the Douay-Rheims version, which predates the Protestant King James which appeared in 1611. You're right about Guy Fawkes being caught and executed. Not that I condone his efforts but when it became clear that King James was not to grant Catholics any relief from the persecution of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth I, this desperate plot was hatched. Nothing to do with Bible versions though.

But when you hold our current translations up against the original texts, the KJV is not the most accurate. From my own studies and comparisons, I'd say the NASB ('95) comes out on top.

The "Archaic" language is absolutely imperitive. Removal of the thee's, thou's, thine, ye's etc. Has completely changed meanings of entire passages. Christians really need to stop elevating men of intellect and simply trust their Bible. Is the Creator incapable of preserving His word in one complete book? When you read the KJV only like these Biblically misguided and miseducated KJV-onlyist guys here you get to believe that "unicorns" exist as they are mentioned (that is, erroneously translated) in the KJV Bible! All I needed to read was 1 John 3:9-10 KJV Just for starters...adding nothing, taking away nothing....and receive it into my heart. I will never understand the KJV onlyism logic - if there is logic - Three major reasons to choose KJV: 1. The familly of the manuscripts chosen by Erasmus. i.e the Byzantine late corrupted manuscripts of which Erasmus didn't have but half a dozen! you know that there is many differences between the TR of Erasmus and the Byzantine text? 2. The pholosophy!! what ever he ment by it, it has no weight or value in textual critic. 3. The church, where is the church in the new english translations? It is like hearing the Pope of Rome in the medivial ages. The Jehova witnesses have a translation that you can consider as a work of the church - not the building we call church they don't have one - and you can see the bad infulence of the church in this translation. Still who says that all the modern translations are made by atheists or non christians?

When you call yourself after another man’s name (who is not Jesus) you’re being carnal. My friend study the word for yourself. Many people can convince others of strange doctrines by using verses out of context. If the matter were not so we would not have so many different denominations. We would all do well to throw everything we once knew into the trash and start fresh from the ground up. Sift every doctrine through the scriptures. Not isolated verses. Read the whole books and letters in one sitting. You would be blessed. When you read always ask Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

The underlying Greek text of the AV KJV, is by far the superior underlying Greek text, being in agreement with the majority of copies ever made or discovered. The reliability of a copy should not be determined by its age, anymore than a witnesses testimony in a court of law should be determined by the age of the witness. Especially when that witness's testimony disagrees with the overabundance of the majority of witnesses, whose testimony harmonizes with one another's.
this is not right though. what do you mean by majority of copies ever made ? the Greek text the KJV is based on, called Textus Receptus, was compiled somewhere around the 16th or 17th century, and had as few as 6 manuscripts and as many as 40, from the sources i’ve heard. the earliest Greek manuscript the compilers of the Textus Receptus had access to was written in the 10th century 900ad, 800 years after the original was written. The new Greek compiled texts, mainly Nestle Aland and the UBS are compiled based on the now roughly 5000 manuscripts that we have access to, with the earliest dating back to only about 50 years after the original texts were written, as well as complete new testaments by the 4th century. I could understand if you were arguing for Byzantine manuscript superiority over the majority Alexandrian, and I think Syriac as well, manuscripts. but if you are saying that - assuming you are talking about the Greek compiled text called “Textus Receptus”- that the KJV is most accurate compared to the Textus Receptus - well of course it would be, since the KJV was written from the Textus Receptus. Otherwise, if you’re not using the Textus Receptus Greek text - are you comparing the newer Greek compiled texts to paraphrased translations such as the NIV and NLT, and then contrasting between the KJV? because if you are comparing paraphrase translations to the literal translation of the KJV, you are essentially comparing apples to oranges. The common argument for KJV-onlyists isn’t majority of manuscript and historical tradition, it is Byzantine manuscript superiority
also it isn’t the same as a witness’ testimony being determined by their age. What we are arguing for is the credibility of a witness based on the length of time from the incident and their relation to the incident relative to their position in time from the incident. So you would much rather prefer to have an early 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd account witness who was alive when the incident occurred, or is at the least second generation, rather than only have a witness who lived 800 years later and is going off of information that has been passed down 100s of times.
By all means, if all that we have is 800 years later and we can faithfully trust that account based on historical context, studies, and surrounding information, then it should be considered trustworthy, but if we have much earlier sources that are corroborated by commentaries from the same time period, then why should we deny them to their rightful place?
I agree with Doug Wilson. KJV is a different Bible from the others. Just compare the translations. I am not a KJV only. But believe it is the best English translation.

While I disagree with Mr. Wilson on the Byzantine family being more reliable, I find the other points he made to be quite compelling and ones I’ve not heard from a KJV only type.
I see your point, and it lines up with your philosophy of also wanting to return to imposing Christian law on non believers. That said, I disagree because the "church" in the public eye doesn't represent the true church of Christ. Just because the people that wrote the KJV identified as Christians doesn't mean we should give them any special treatment or authority in what they do. From the small research I have done I thought that the manuscript tradition for the KJV was weaker, but I still have a lot to learn on that element so I'll give it to you. I've been mostly studying from the ESV as of late, but I always like to compare versions whenever anything seems remotely unclear to make sure that I don't misinterpret based on translation alone.

In those regards, the NKJV is just like other translations. But it is based on a similar text to the majority text, so you're right in pointing that out. The 3rd point is a great point. The WEB is actually a non-copyrighted modern and literal translation and I believe it's based on the same/similiar manuscript family as the KJV. The NET Bible is copyrighted but provided free

Pastor, you might want to check out the Simplified King James Version (SKJV) from Barbour Publishing. It is in contemporary English. It is technically not a new translation, but a revision of the KJV, so still based on the same manuscripts. So far from my studies of it, it seems closer to the KJV than the NKJV.. Unfortunately it is under copyright .

I call kjv "original intent", especially in this age of revisionist history. Before all of this revisionism to history, America went by the Geneva and Kjv Bible, as they were from the same manuscripts. Now, there is much more fracturing happening in the western church and everybody has a different translation. That's okay, but there needs to be where they go back to a word for word translation tether than a thought for thought translation.

I often use the English Study Bible which is a revision of the Authorized Version, known popularly as the King James Version. This revision was done with constant reference to the same Hebrew and Greek manuscripts that the translators of the KJV used. It sounds like it is what Doug Wilson is looking for. It is available for free as an app from Grace Ministries India. It was produced by the American missionary Bob Crow and his Indian colleague Jeevan Nair. It also available in Telegu. I respect Doug greatly and follow his ministry and content he publishes. I will agree with his last point. It is too bad that our contemporary Bible translations are owned and controlled by corporate interests. My Bible translations of choice are the NASB 95, LSB NT 2021, ESV, CSB and of course the KJV. However I am a critical text advocate. I am not sure of the ownership/copyright status of the NET Bible. I have heard it is open and free and have heard otherwise from those I trust.
Good points. I find myself feeling the same way. I do use the NKJV and MEV in supplemental fashion to the KJV in preaching. Would be curious to hear his opinion on the WEB.

This is earnest and sincere. But absolutely incorrect in a lot of ways. To say that newer versions are devoid of the church involvement and to imply it’s all corporations and corrupt has no basis. The NASB for example was absolutely formulated with an ecumenical, Christian run organization. Created by Christian scholars that are masters in Greek Hebrew and Aramaic.
We know more about ancient Hebrew and Greek today than they did in the 1600s.
King James had given directives on certain things. We know this so it’s kind of funny how newer Christian organizations are supposed to be more corrupted than literally a king/government directive?
To say that the manuscript tradition is more reliable is another blunder. Newer translations are again dealing with more information, higher scholars, more ecumenical, many more manuscripts and earlier manuscripts than the KJV.
No and I mean absolutely no doctrinal differences are found in kjv or any of the reliable newer versions.
I love the kjv, I was raised on it and still quote the kjv more often. But to say that you have to use it because the nasb2020 is lesser in any way, is absurd. If anything I trust its accuracy to the original Greek much more.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. All your reasons are reasonable AND KJV is so beautiful. It’s easier to memorize BECAUSE it’s Shakespearean English. Our current culture is so dumbed down; it would do them good to stretch their vocabularies. I love the KJV.

I agree! I love the Shakespearean English. It's what the Reformers used so it has a special place for me.
I know the critical issues with the AV, but find them less than the so-called Critical Text.
I thought that the King James Bible came to be because of the rule of a king.......like maybe a certain King James.
Protestant King James the 1st authorized and financed scholars who knew Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, and other relative languages to compile the most accurate translation of the Holy Scriptures in an English translation for the common man in his kingdom. Back then the average Bible was chained to the pulpits of the local Church buildings. There were scarce copies back then and a lot were in Latin. The Catholics hated King James for that and because the King was Protestant. Roman Catholic Guy Fawkes tried to assassinate the King and his court by using barrels of gun powder below the floor of the King's court to blow them up. But he was caught and executed.
@@MegaGeorge1948 You have to understand the context of the times. A Bible was chained to the pulpit because, prior to the printing press, every Bible was produced by hand, usually by Monks. In addition most ordinary people could neither read or write. However, in 1582 an English version of the Bible was printed by The Catholic Church, called the Douay-Rheims version, which predates the Protestant King James which appeared in 1611. You're right about Guy Fawkes being caught and executed. Not that I condone his efforts but when it became clear that King James was not to grant Catholics any relief from the persecution of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth I, this desperate plot was hatched. Nothing to do with Bible versions though.

But when you hold our current translations up against the original texts, the KJV is not the most accurate. From my own studies and comparisons, I'd say the NASB ('95) comes out on top.

The "Archaic" language is absolutely imperitive. Removal of the thee's, thou's, thine, ye's etc. Has completely changed meanings of entire passages. Christians really need to stop elevating men of intellect and simply trust their Bible. Is the Creator incapable of preserving His word in one complete book? Has he left it up to modern scholarship to give you absolute truth? Have you ever wondered how a Pastor can hold up a bible and proclaim that it is the infallible word of God while simultaneously there are other Pastors doing the same thing with a different version? There can only be one my dear brothers and sisters. Start at the beginning and follow the line of manuscripts, research greek philosophies that were corrupting the word of God and use your own discernment through prayer instead of listening to men like James White. His sole purpose is to turn people away from the KJB and I will not be convinced otherwise. It is painfully obvious that he trusts his own opinion above the King James Bible and that should be alarming to everyone, but for some reason it is not. Why is that? Has satan so marvelously casted doubt in the minds of the majority of professing believers. Doubt that they can actually hold and read the words of Almighty God?
