My first exposure to this song was way back in high school. We had an event called Junior Ex (Junior Exhibition) that was followed by the formal junior prom. Junior Ex was basically a talent show put on by the junior class. In 1984, a group of junior boys did a lip sync to this song wearing their tuxedos they were wearing to the prom later! I’ll never forget it. 😌
Something I find great about this song: it has a HUGE sound, rich and full and dynamic... but it's pulled off with just two guitars, a drum kit and the vocals... the subdued lead blends so smoothly with the main riff it's like he's playing both at the same time... and the whole thing is mastered so that it still sounds great even on a crappy mono speaker.

It's got all kinds of punch that would come through even on the cheapest 80s boombox. Besides, I don't think you got the right idea about "doubling guitars". I can hear what sounds like the *two* guitarists playing the main riff at times, but I think you might be mistaking a bit of millisecond delay for run-of-the-mill track doubling. I mean, listen to the phrasing, the guitars got all kinds of tremolo-like bends that would totally get out of phase if they were just straight up doubled as you suggest.
@@blurvough the guitars are doubled. Plus there is a second guitar. It's standard on recordings to fill out the sound. Happens with the vocals too..... just saying this is super produced..... the sound isn't coming from only 3 instruments. When it is, it sounds different... and better.

But Billy Gibbons, who both sings and plays lead guitar was playing a special setup which is most prominent and very much is not doubled. The production team helps out by singing the background harmonies. A recently discovered cousin (thanks Ancestry) used to own a music shop in El Cajon, CA. He knew Billy Gibbons already. One day there was a biker and chili festival in town when Billy stopped by - so he was in a good mood by the time he got to the shop. At the time, cousin was leading a guitar lesson for a teen on his acoustic guitar. Billy walks in and tells the boy to get himself an electric guitar. He proceeds to pick one off the wall and buy it for him. The boy hurries home to show off the guitar to dad. Dad is sure it's stolen and drags the boy back to the shop to return the guitar and comes face to face with Mr. Gibbons. Billy revealed that he was given a guitar by Hendrix and was paying it forward.

I am 68 years old from Deep East Texas about 110 miles from Houston and these guys are great. I have seen them 7 times . I have seen them in Houston, Beaumont, Topeka, Ks., Tuscon, Arizona and the last time in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Tx. I think they said the attendance at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas was 85,000 and what a show.
When I first heard this treasure on the radio, I was awestruck and could not imagine ZZ Top's music could keep getting better and better. Their music was already top of the line in the progressive rock realm. But they did it with this icon of the rock world!!! It is a shining sun in the lexicon of the rock & roll era. My favorite video of Sharp Dressed Man is the: Nickleback Sharp Dressed Man 2007 Live Video!!! Beyond mere words!
