Justin has made his name in the history of guitar. And in teaching. He will raise an army of guitarists and musicians. I can't think of a bigger honor.
Such a pleasure to have you, with your usual cheerfulness, patience and enthusiasm, continuing to give these lessons, during these tough times. Recently turned 70, just over a year in to learning guitar on my own, and this has been such a help. Am, finally, making real progress, despite frustrations (mainly fingers not doing what I want them to do), by sticking with practice, and not rushing things. We have time! Being a folk music fan who wants to play my favourites this finger style is important, and this lesson makes a great start as a solid basic foundation. With many thanks and much appreciation.
I'm 71 and have the same problem keith does. Wayward fingers but guess it's all down to practice and muscle memory. Problem is the old memory, brain and muscle ain't what it used to be but I'm not giving up. Also into folk/ country so enjoyed the fingerpicking introduction .
@@mnphilip Very difficult! Still not mastered. I know it's about practice and patience, developing muscles and memory, but my fingers don't want to get into the right shape on guitar to make barre chords work. Despite Justin's excellent lessons and advice. At the moment I use alternatives to barre chords, to keep enjoyment going, while making regular attempts to have another go at barre chords. Progress is slow, but as with other areas of playing, there is progress!
I've only been playing guitar for five months and my fingerstyle has actually surpassed my flat pick strumming because I'm doing way more of it. Another great video.
That you understand beginners far more than the vast majority of internet / YT teachers has never been exemplified better than in this video. I have been learning with you for a couple of years and couldn’t be happier with my progress. But recently I decided to go off piste and look at some ‘beginners’ finger-style videos on YT (because it had’t come up in your course yet). I found those videos very discouraging, and not just because they all feature good-looking French guys. Eg using obscure chords and difficult chord changes in the first ten minutes when I hadn’t even begun to get familiar with PIMA. So, I came home to you and I am happy again… You are the best (and yes, Tommy Emmanuel is the other best!)
yeah, he's a very good teacher. A good teacher knows how to teach to people who don't know how to do it! bad teachers usually don't know how to do that and are showing off part of the time
Been playing for over 35 years - self taught and by ear. This is simplest explanation and teaching of finger picking styles 6/8 4/4 I have come across - thank you
20 years ago, I attempted to learn to play guitar, but I gave up. I wish I had Justin as a teacher. Had I known these 'basics', I'd probably have been playing today. I'll definitely recommend beginner players watching this video.
I totally get it now what he means by ''you kinda gotta feel it'' when he's talking about picking the strings. I spent a few hours on 'Romanza' and its a very basic fingerpicking pattern but in the beginning youre still very conscious about it especially when changing chords and things get mixed up. But there's this breakthrough that just happens out of nowhere where youre not picking the strings anymore and your fingers just kinda wave over the strings. There's no pressure anymore and it just waves over it with the softest touch. It's such an amazing feeling to have!
I love your guitar teachings in general and in this tutorial I particularly smiled at the nail part. I know that I'm supposed to have long nails for classical guitar playing, but when I play the bass guitar, this doesn't work. So glad to have found a teacher who leaves it up to us!
Came here to to get away from my finger pain what a great way to give the left hand a bit of a break and still keep learning it sounds quite nice with that d chord and then open strings.
First time listened to one of your lessons. What a pleasure to find an instructor sooo easy to follow . Am hooked now. Been plonking about 3 years using thumb for every note. Def will now concentrate full finger style over winter. Many many thanks.
You are the best Justin, I played guitar when I was in high school but I quit after a few years, partly because my tutor wasn't as great as you are. I just bought a telecaster and giving a second try now in my late twenties. Fingerstyle is one of my favourite styles as I would love to emulate mark knopfler, so I'm really looking forward to continue with these type of lessons!

Thanks, Justin for your awesome and FREE tutorials! I learned whatever I know today from them. I am beginning to learn fingerstyle now and had a question. I wish to play songs with the ability to switch between pick-strumming and fingerstyle and I don't want to rely on some less-common things like a thumb pick, since it may not be available everywhere (in that moment). 2 main recommendations I've come across while researching are: 1. Using thumb + 1st finger with the pick for the 3 bass strings and fingers 2,3,4 for the last 3 strings. 2. Holding pick between finger 1 & 2 and learn to switch back and forth (as in Rhett Shull's Fingerpicking tips on youtube. I'm not allowed to post links here it seems) It would be helpful if you or anyone experienced in the community could recommend which way to practice.
Justin, thank you very much for all your lessons. Extremely helpful, and your gentle and friendly approach to teaching always makes me feel good and understood. I learn guitar on RUclips, and you are my number one pick amongst all guitar teachers here. Absolute legend, the amount of content you produced over the years is truly impressive. Great website too! I started fingerstyle trying to anchor my little finger but found it really tense and awkward, so started playing without the anchor and eventually made some progress. Tonight for some reason when back to trying anchoring and for some reason it felt much more comfortable than before. Townes van Zandt here we come!
Warning about playing with fingernails: I come from playing classical (i.e. nylon strung) guitar where use of the nail is almost universal among concert players. However, "playing with nails" is almost a misnomer. It is really playing with a COMBINATION of nail and fingertip flesh. The nails should be kept short, projecting only 1 or 2 mm beyond the fingertip. The string contacts the flesh first and then slides off the nail as the finger plucks the string. If your nails are long and you only use them you will get a very hard, often tinny, sound. I've found that playing on steel strings a lot will thin the nail and it will eventually break. I don't have the thickest nails so YMMV. If you do use nails, they should be shaped so that the string can slide off smoothly without catching. This means NOT shaping them so they have a peak right in the middle and are tapered on either side. The most common shape is shortest on the side of the nail that first makes contact with the string (the left side of the nail for right handed players) and gradually shaped longer towards the other side. The shape may also need to vary from finger to finger depending on your particular hand position and finger shape. Experimenting with your particular situation is usually necessary.
tbh I think the littlefinger anchor thing probably just depends on your hand shape/ finger sizes. When I tried to "self teach" fingerstyle (bumbled my way through elliott smith guitarpro tabs)- I naturally/unconsciously did the little finger anchor, I actually assumed it was a bad thing since I figured more complicated fingerstyle songs would need the little finger to be ready to pluck strings - I just find it naturally comfortable and I don't think there's any technical advantage aside from it just being naturally comfortable for certain people.
I’m so glad you’re doing finger picking!! I bought a guitar to learn how to play my favorite songs, and nearly every song is a finger song!!! Auggggh Syd Matters, Daughter, Leonard Cohen... they’re all finger picking songs 🤦🏻♀️

Question: Started playing at 55ish been a year, thanks for your help. When plucking do you have to pluck all the strings that your fingers are supressing on a fret? Is the base string the primary that you absolutely must pluck?
Sometimes you hold a full chord shape yet only pick some of the strings of that chord. It is simply good practice to form the chord anyway. Other times only a partu=ial chord needs to be fretted. Awesome! I'm finding this so easy that I must be doing something wrong! Nothing like the struggles I've had trying to get chord changes fast & accurate
Appreciating your comments about playing in different places along the strings for tonal variety. I've been developing this skill since I'm mostly using my Gibson Les Paul Junior Tribute DC these days (weren't these originally intended for beginners and students anyway?). Who needs a neck pickup? 😂And of course as you say, the technique sits very nicely on an electric guitar. One day I'll get an acoustic guitar. One day.
I got a pretty nice one at a pawn shop for $80. It was nearly brand-new. Sure it only sold for 120 we're so brand new. But it's a great backup guitar to have on hand to take with me.

Been trying to learn guitar now for some time and I'm into trying to finger pick a song. I have no trouble reading tabs and I can play the song pretty well now. But what I find so difficult, in all fingerpicking songs for that matter, is to play in time to it when its a bit more advanced. Been looking through youtube to try to find some tips for this but no luck yet. Great videos though Justin, you should make one about keeping time in advanced fingerpicking :)

Come to think of it, a G chord in this pattern is really a Gno5; you've got 3 strings on G and one on B. Still functions as a G, though. Or, if you do your "big G" chord with the 3rd fret of the B string, you lose your only B and get a G power chord.
Nice video. May I refer you to one of the greatest electric guitarists in modern times, Mark Knopfler of "Dire Straits." He uses finger-style. (Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Sultans of Swing, just to mention a few great songs).
Awesome videos and they were highly recommended. I have never played guitar but I want to learn. I'm musically inclined and have played Sax and the harmonica, but I want to get into guitar so I can sing as well. Mostly for campfire jamming with my kids. When I think about learning guitar, I think about the scene from August Rush where he plays a percussive fingerstyle tune and that's how I see the outcome of learning guitar. However, idk where to start. Do I need to start with regular pick style or can I learn using finger style from the beginning and add percussion once I get a handle on it? Do you have a thread on fingerstyle for beginners that would start me from the very basics?
Just bought my new Taylor. Complete Newby. I don't really care to "strum". Can I not learn finger style first? If so, learn cords first or get a Pickers version of scales??
Congrats on the new guitar. If you're a total newbie then the best recommendation you can have is one that thousands of others would give: follow the lessons of the Beginner course: www.justinguitar.com/site-map-and-lesson-structure Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher

Dose it really matter where you place you pinky finger as an anchor? I find it works well if I rest it on the bottom of my middle pick up on my electric.

Once again, awesome lesson. Thanks!!
How's the video uploaded 2 mins ago but your comment is 1 month old??
Greatest tutorial! Thank you!
Come to think of it, a G chord in this pattern is really a Gno5; you've got 3 strings on G and one on B. Still functions as a G, though. Or, if you do your "big G" chord with the 3rd fret of the B string, you lose your only B and get a G power chord.
Looking forward to the upcoming fingerstyle module!
God bless you my dear teacher
Can you practice finger picking and pick at the same time. I'm trying finger picking and pick but just learning both and chords as well
Hey Justin! I have a question. What camera are you using to film your videos, and what mic are you using?
John Mayer plays fingerstyle on electric all the time
E-guitar played with just the fingers? Check out Jarred James Nichols. Not exactly classic finger style. But what a sound from a simple rig.
And he plays epiphone!!!
Another great lesson from our Justin!
Sir, when will this playlist (beginner lesson) end? I'm currently on lesson 1 and just curious about how many videos we'll get.
Thanks 😊
Good stuff here. Honest basic instruction. Thanks.🤠
For finger style do you suggest a nylon string guitar or steel strings ?
It depends on which style you want to play! Some people find easier to learn on a nylon string guitar.
Hi Justin what is the the best finger picking style for slide on either on electric guitars or eletro accostic or accostic guitars
Just bought my new Taylor. Complete Newby. I don't really care to "strum". Can I not learn finger style first? If so, learn cords first or get a Pickers version of scales??
Congrats on the new guitar. If you're a total newbie then the best recommendation you can have is one that thousands of others would give: follow the lessons of the Beginner course: www.justinguitar.com/site-map-and-lesson-structure

New guitar? Mic inside. Great sound.
The calluses on my fingers become rough and snags on the strings. I use a course fingernail file to smoothen the tips on my fingers.
What about finger picks like when playing the banjo?
Thanks!
Many thanks for the super thanks and supporting the channel. It means a lot. Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher www.justinguitar.com
Omg thank you for this
Dose it really matter where you place you pinky finger as an anchor? I find it works well if I rest it on the bottom of my middle pick up on my electric.
