This is the first that I've ever heard of Dr. Carol Anderson. I feel cheated for not being familiar with her until now. I enjoyed listening to her assessment of civil rights v human rights. Great argument. Some of the facts I knew, many I did not. She did a great job of connecting the dots.

I am glad to have found someone of note with sentiments the same as mine. Human rights trump civil rights every time. We cannot count on individuals to be civil-ever.

After being educated in the Moorish Science Temple, I always wondered why so often the thrust was for civil rights instead of human rights, amongst our black leadership. Thank you professor Carol Anderson for providing the answer to my question. Goddess bless you.

WOW! This woman has EXACTLY the opposite philosophy of my parents (and Republicans generally), who told me (by the way I/they are white) over and over "No one has a RIGHT to housing, medical care, education, but they must WORK for that!" Hard work is important but to them it was just that simple. When I found out that my father was given $10,000 by his father for his first home's down payment, I was furious! I agree with Ms. Anderson, "Human Rights" would be a better way of stating it, but for all humans, not just civil rights, or black rights, HUMAN RIGHTS! Very intelligent woman!

Yeah well life is super easy when you get a head start in life and someone helps you run your race! I'm sure if you dug more that's not the only "help" they received but that's a ginormous help in life that's more help than most people get in life!

Lisa O. Davis Your parents are “right.” Natural rights are what you’re born into the world with - they are God given, or naturally given: the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness (the right to keep the fruits of your own labor). Rights are not stuff. Stuff has to be given to you by others, or earned through your own work. You’re not born and naturally given a house, or food, or employment, or health insurance. These things must be acquired or provided by other people, thus they are not rights. These are things - not rights. You’re free to acquire said things, and no one can take them away from you without violating your “rights,” however by insisting that you be provided these things at the expense of others necessarily deprives other people of their naturally born rights.

Just wish they would stop categorizing us as AA. We are indigenous to this land. We were here 200 years before “so called” Columbus discovered America. Visit your local library and go through the microfiche, where you can find all this information. So, blame Jessie Jackson for agreeing to this term African American.
