  • In this video, I share what I consider to be a valuable aspect of breathing that TT Liang demonstrated to me in the mid 1970s.

what a great find for me to find your RUclips videos. I took classes at TT Liang's studio in Boston in the early 1980s. So funny that he played that little joke on you, but also what a great lesson.
When I took classes Master Liang was mostly just sitting in a large easy chair, he often seemed like he was mostly sleeping while one of the instructors would be teaching. Then every so often TT would jump up and he had a rolled up magazine and he would bop the instructor or a student with the magazine, then say no no you doing it wrong, and he would proceed to show the correct way to do it. Sometimes his demonstration would involve bouncing a 200 lb football player off the back wall. Wow! good demo! LOL!

A beautiful explanation about the importance of deep breathing. Also happy to hear more anecdotes about TT Liang, thank you for sharing.

Thank you for expressing your appreciation. I recommend reading a very well-written and interesting book about TT Liang by Stuart Alve Olson:
"Steal My Art: The Life and Times of T'ai Chi Master T.T. Liang."

It’s nice to hear from one of the more mature Tai Chi students of NYC! The experience is invaluable. Thank you!

@@dsfgnk4 you’re welcome. I’m a “younger brother” from William CC Chen’s school. I moved many years ago but it’s nice to learn from an “older brother” today!

This is sooooo important! I am on a shaolin course and the first thing we get taught is breathing. Both the deep belly breathing like you described, but also the middle chest breathing and at the end the top breathing or clavicula breathing. First seperately and then all three together. This whole exercise takes about an hour. We need to practice for this method 21 days.

Yes, I’m glad that you made that point. It is very important for us to utilize our complete breathing apparatus. Much attention is paid to abdominal breathing because so many people fail to utilize it, so the importance of use of the rib cage is then neglected. I will consider doing additional videos on breathing.

This is a wonderful RUclips channel Robert! Always insightful and it really helps, because with this busy life it’s not always easy to make it to class. Referring to the lessons that you post and then working on applying them can be done anytime! A great resource because I know what you teach is trustworthy. … ed
