Extracting the theobromine from cocoa powder

  • Theobromine is an interesting molecule and is very similar to caffeine. It appears in a high concentration in cocoa (a small amount of caffeine is also in cocoa).
    In this video, I am extracting theobromine from cocoa. In the future, I might prepare cocoa powder from raw cocoa pods.

    First: really fun video! :)
    Second: you should consider getting a Soxhlet extractor; the solvent efficiency of your extraction step would probably have been improved considerably by using one. You probably also lost quite a bit of your yield percentage to your final filtration step since the total yield is already quite small; in your place, I probably would have redissolved the theobromine in an appropriate solvent directly from the filtration funnel and recrystallized it.
    Edit: looks like some folks beat me to the punch with the Soxhlet extractor comment. You shouldn't need to mix the cocoa with anything to get the extractor to drain, though; any sufficiently fine filter paper ought to do the trick as long as you don't let it block the draining tube.

      Pretty much everything is dog poison lol.
      Theobromine, caffeine, xylitol (an artificial sweeter used in gums, candies, toothpastes, etc.), the _allium_ genus (onions, garlic, chives, etc.,) alcohol, hops, grapes/raisins, macadamia nuts, yeast dough, corn on the cob, tea tree oil, NSAIDS, THC (Humulus lupulus [hops] and Cannabis sativa are closely related members of the hemp family,) methamphetamine, antifreeze...
      But don't just assume that dogs are no fun at a party... Most dogs seem to enjoy psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Dogs who have accidentally consumed them out in the yard have been observed to preferentially seek them out in the same area of the yard again at later times, so some dogs may like to get down, but only in safe ways 😎

    • @universalnetwork264
      @universalnetwork264 4 года назад +8

      I can't believe I'm saying this but meth isn't *that* bad for humans. It's our tendency to get carried away with it because it's a quick hitting stimulant that allows you to stay awake.
      It doesn't feel unhealthy despite its rep but it puts a big strain on your heart, during the high you feel pain and pressure where your heart is but it's not that bothersome.
      When people stay up all the time, get addicted to it and shit. They end up getting meth mouth, skinny cheeks, lost the way of life, fuck others and themselves over etc.
      What starts off harmless quickly turns into a habit that completely degenerates you. That is why it's so harmful. It's not all that toxic compared to Adderall and caffeine if you were able to use it responsibly which I do not know anyone who does.

    Received my beakers about 2 weeks ago, they are of great quality and the price is hard to beat! One thing, if you order the set, do not nest them in each other! the two largest sizes can stick inside each other and I made a small scratch on the inside of the largest (500 mL I believe) extracting the other. Completely my fault for trying to make them easier to carry, but just something to be aware of.

    A couple of questions here: For the first step, neutralising the tannins, do you think zinc oxide would work as effectively as magnesium oxide? Then for the extraction step, if the theobromine isn't all that soluble in the DCM, wouldn't it be better to use a soxhlet extractor? The design of which means that you're constantly extracting the solids over and over again with freshly distilled solvent until all the soluble components are in solution.

      soxhlet extractors aren´t that cheap. probably Nile doesn´t have one otherwise you´re right a soxhlet is perfect for extractions but also only for the first step. ANd remember soxlet extractions aren´t that fast either. they are meant to be used for when you need expensive solvents, so you can use a minimal amount of it. (or they can be used for better yields in ether synthesis, but there i have to take Nurdrages video as a reference. i got quite some talking from my organics prof when i asked for the soxhlet. It isn´t cheap as i said)

      give me the link pls, i was scolded they´d be. if they are just 20 bucks i buy one myself and can use it, whenever i need it. however does it work properly (though i don´t see how low quality glass would tamper with simple physics)? and what´s the material? I just can repeat what was scolded for. Don´t know what the fuck he paid for it. given his reactioin WAY to much

    • @LilGugz
      @LilGugz 7 лет назад +5

      I wouldn't say they're $20, but we use soxhlets all the time in our lab. Even a cheap small 100 mL sox will do, the yield you'd get with a sox vs. doing repeated extractions yourself is immeasurable. PLUS the labour, haha

    Interesting method, thank you for sharing.
    Only thing I might add is that the plant is called cacao, not cocoa. Cocoa originated from a misspelling when first introduced in England, which became commonplace thus its constant usage, nowadays its mostly used to refer to processed cacao powder, which is used in cooking/making hot chocolate.
    Several languages use the spelling cacao as well, from the plants scientific name theobroma cacao.
    Keep up the good work!

    Using a different non-polar solvent does work. I just finished extracting some theobromine using an acid-base extraction with "naptha" (generally, a combination of alkane fractions) as the organic solvent and yielded some beautiful crystals.

    Why not use a Soxhlet extractor for this extraction? Something that you extract in two steps and still get such low yield seems like a perfect scenario to use a Soxhlet extractor to me. Do you just not have one, or do you want to keep it to relatively basic equipment?

    • @MrMontugar
      @MrMontugar 7 лет назад +1

      he does have one. he used it in the Capsaicinoids video. the problem is that he would need to mix it with celite so the soxhlet could drain. he don't have any celite right now.

    Nice video, for the piranha solution issues have you tried base piranha (Ammonia+ H2O2)? i have heard that it is more manageable than the acid version.
    Besides it would make a good video alongside the one you made about the acid version, there is no video on the subject and the way it works is not clear to me (i just know it works)

    • @Cadwaladr
      @Cadwaladr 7 лет назад +4

      Base piranha solutions can eat away the sintered glass; acid is easier on the equipment.

    Do NOT use cocoa powder. Use CACAO powder. Cacao has much more theobromine than cocoa does as it's been unprocessed so you'll get a higher yield with cacao.

      I dunno if he wants that kind of traffic from those kinds of videos, I mean the freebasing one was kind of a joke about clandestine chemistry.
      But technically it's legal in the US (except in Illinois), there was apparently an exemption in the CSA for it: under the CSA, all optical isomers of listed Schedule II opiates are automatically Schedule II substances. Since dextromethorphan is an optical isomer of the Schedule II opiate levomethorphan (but does not act like an opiate), an exemption was necessary to keep it a non-controlled substance. The Federal Analog Act does not apply to dextromethorphan because a new drug application has been filed for it.
      But that's Wikipedia, so... Don't bet your free life on it.
