  • So in this video I’m going to show you the Tricks that I use to save me a little bit of time in doing the timing belt on my Audi 3.0 V6 also I explain to you why there’s no need for the engine to have timing marks and show you how the tools work when used properly. I do believe that the information contained in this video will make your job simpler because you’ll understand exactly why I don’t loosen the Cams so that’ll probably save you a good 30 or 45 minutes so the video is definitely Worth the watch through even though I run my mouth quite a bit in the video so if you’re working on an Audi with the V-6 in it dual overhead cam this video should be helpful for you thank you much for viewing God bless and have a great day.

    good vid, very helpful!!!
    wood like to mention couple of things:
    1: do not insert belt tensioner if you don't want to mess with camshaft adjusting bolts. it's one way or the other (you did mention that, but should give more info on why you insert belt tensioner afterwards).
    2. TDC (Top Dead Center) for correct timing is on cylinder 3, in order to put crankshaft plug without any issues.
    3. should give more info on how to insert crankshaft plug and where it's located. spend like 2 hours on dame thing, lol
    4. it is an interference engine, so try to rotate it (without timing belt) as less as possible.
    Ones again, thanks for the great vid :)

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  Год назад

      No . You can take the valve cover off then remove the cam holders that will allow all the valves to press upwards then you can turn the engine as much as you like but more than likely if your timing belt broke you’ve already got bent valves so what you wanna do is remove the cam hold down journals then do a leak down test on each cylinder this will tell you which cylinder is broken if any. Sometimes you get lucky I hope you do brother

    Been on this job for about 3 weeks, 2003 A4 B6 3.0 AVK engine, first time I've seen anything about keeping the belt tight to reduce deflection, so that is a great tip. I'm halfway done, had to order parts one at a time. I'm at the camshaft seals, the passenger side exhaust cam looks like it is leaking but not sure if it is leaking leaking, or just from removing the caps and the Niagara of oil ran back to the space when I removed them. How can I tell if the cam seals really need replaced, or if it's more from the valve cover gaskets? There's oil everywhere on this engine. I'm assuming alot came from the crankshaft seal as well. I have all 5 seals on hand ready to replace

    I need help getting the cams back in synch. I done the timing belt just like your video but my cams are 30 to 40 degrees out, because the timing belt pulley on the crank came off when I removed the crank pulley and I didn't have the cam locks in place place so the cams jumped time but I thought no big deal because the cam locks only fo on one way , but they are put of such. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

      OK in that scenario you need to take off the cam caps put the loosen the bolts
      Put the cam holders in the correct position to align the Cams correctly then tighten the bolts back down. There’s extra steps they are not steps that I used in this video because it was unnecessary in my particular situation because my cam holders went on the cams correctly.

      Thank you very much for the kind words. I greatly appreciate than welcome to the channel. Happy to have you Technically speaking, if you’re unable to get the tool onto the cams when it’s near the proper position, you’re supposed to remove the cam cover caps and move the cam gear to the proper position. I did not do that procedure in the video because it was unnecessary

      When you have the Cams locked properly takeoff the caps and loosen the cam bolts then tighten up the cam holders and that should get rid of your slack. I didn’t do it in this video because it wasn’t necessary.
      But when you have extra slack like that you need to take the caps off and make sure the timing is tight

    I really like your video, but I have one question. After rotating the crankshaft and getting the engine to TDC, it was easy to install the cam lock tool on the passenger side, but it is not lining up properly for the installation of the cam lock tool on the driver side. How do I rotate or move the driver side camshaft so that the tool sits and lock in properly? I tried rotating the crankshaft back and forth as you did in your video, but the driver side is not moving at all, at least not enough to set the camshaft lock tool. Any suggestions? Thanks.

      Did your timing belt break? If it broke your valves are bent
      Takeoff the caps of the cams and you will be able to rotate them where they need to be.

      @@sharpcarco No the timing belt is okay. It doesn't look stretched or any teeth missing. I don't know how it got off timing, if that's what the problem is. Do I take the caps off of the cam & loosen the bolts to rotate the shaft? Also do I leave the timing belt intact as well as the cam lock on the passenger side? Sorry for all of the questions, just trying to get this right. Thanks for your help!

  • @vernonjackson6387

    I rotated the engine clockwise until both the intake and exhaust cam lobes on cylinder 3 on the passenger side cylinder head were pointed upward and uniformed. The cam locking tool fitted perfectly onto the camshaft. I was unable to get the cam locking tool to line up with the slots on the driver side camshaft. Is it safe to turn the crankshaft until the tool can fit? When I tried turning the crankshaft, the mark no longer lines up on the crank and the shaft refuses to turn because the cam locking tool on #3 is preventing it from going but so far. Any suggestions? Thanks. Yes, the timing belt has not been removed.

      I would take a look at the belt when you remove it...... i’m assuming there’s missing teeth.
      You’ll be very lucky if it did not bend a valve. So make sure you try to start it up before you put it all back together and see how it runs. Block off the coolant and transmission lines power steering lines etc. I wouldn’t even put the alternator belt on. Or the front end

    Hey The Clay Way,
    I live near Houston, TX. I am changing head gasket on 02 Audi A4 quattro 3.0- After putting the camshaft locking tool, I removed the cylinder heads. I found bunch of coolant on the pistons as well. What i found was all the Valves are not inside on the right cylinder head with the locking tool in place. Some valves are seating inside and some were out littlebit, boss. So is that normal or all the valves had to be seated while Camshaft locking tool in place? Please help me, Thank you.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 года назад

      So as the cams spin around they open some valves that have some closed you need to look on the cam and look at the lobe if the high spot of the lobe is pushing the valve down then yes the valve should be open if it’s not then you have a bent valve.
      But if it was running fine before you took it apart and you’re just doing head gaskets you shouldn’t have to worry about that only if the timing belt came off while the engine was running would you really have to worry about bent valves but I would recommend taking it to the machine shop and having them look at it.
      Just to be on the safe side
