And in America, it's the don't expose your shoulders or wear skirts or shorts too short lest you excite the boys. I think its fine to be modest. I dress modestly actually for religious reasons. But it is not okay to say modesty is to deter the eyes or actions of men. They are more than capable of controlling themselves. If not, then they should be caged like the animal they are. 🤷‍♀️
I didnt grow up in uniformed schools though. And didnt have any restrictions on hairstyles that I can think of. So its weird to me to dictate whether someone can wear a ponytail or dye their hair. I can maybe understand hair dye because its practice for a professional work environment. But hairstyles?

Of course kids, boys and girls, can control themselves. They do it every day, in a lot of ways. It's when you tell them that it's okay not to and to thereby abuse others that you get problems. And it's only boys and sex we treat in this manner; we don't allow girls to, say, use anger as an excuse to start punching everything in sight, and then tell the people they punched that it's their fault for wearing a colour that pissed the puncher off or whatever.

By that I mean the outfits they would have as 'uniforms' for the cheerleaders. Some of the schools had the cheerleaders dressed way too skimpy & some of the 'cheer routines' made it clear which teachers (and sometimes which parents) had questionable morals....

It stems from the traditional dress. The back of the kimono is pulled back to expose the back of the neck. On geishas, that area is only half painted. With a full face done, and the paint going all the way down to under the front edge, hands and that spot back there were all the skin you would see. Granted, modern geishas are more than what most think of them as (they're entertainers, musicians, conversationalists, etc), but that image is still there. Pair a high ponytail with a school uniform shirt that has fallen backwards, and it creates the same image. That is where the logic stems from.
That being said, I agree with that one gal. We shouldn't have to accommodate perverts.

Stating that men who get sexually aroused by a lady's neck are perverts isn't backward? Perverts are not defined by what they feel but by what they do. You can get sexually aroused by many things and learn to control it. Indeed many men are easily aroused and learn to control themselves since they are teenagers which requires self discipline and takes a lot of energy. I believe male sexuality is a tabu, usually we experience arousal in a more violent difficult to control way.

Your erection is not her fault, her responsibility, or her problem. If your boy can't stop himself from venting his sexual frustrations by harassing girls because he blames them for his lack of self control, and he can't focus on his schoolwork because he can't take his eyes off of her body, then it is his parents' responsibility to keep him home from school until he can tell the difference between a sexual setting and a non-sexual setting. His sexuality is not for her to manage, she's not obligated to endure inconvenience and discomfort just so that he doesn't have to govern his own behavior. Every girl you meet is not your mother, dude.

The feelings of the men who can control themselves is the least of concern right now, they’re not the ones losing basic freedom. I don’t get why every problem that directly impacts women have to be made about men too.
Edit: plus, there’s no one else to blame for the precautions taken around dangerous men, because there have been, in fact, many dangerous men. If it insults you so much, why am I not seeing that many men fighting against creepy men? In fact, all I’m seeing online are women sticking up for themselves, or men trying to justify the actions of the creepy men one way or another.
When a man harms you, you best bet people will say it could have been prevented had you taken care of yourself more by taking meticulous precautions. They will not directly victim-blame you (to avoid getting called out for it), but they sure will insinuate that your actions ultimately led to yourself being in that situation. These people are often none other than men.
Though this is not to say banning women from basic freedom is the solution. If you ask me what the solution is, I’d say it’s for the world to end. Because there’s absolutely nothing that can be done to stop men from being scary, dangerous, and destructive. Crime stats do not lie. We’re all just waiting for the next person unfortunate enough to get assaulted when you’re just trying to live normally, especially if you’re a girl or a kid.

It's an old leftover from times when kimonos were still the most common piece of clothing. As body curves had to be filled in with padding to show off the kimono and sash belt, the neck was turned into the equivalent of a decollete. Then some old teachers introduced the ban 60 or so years ago. And nobody ever bothered to remove because "it's always been that way" and the questioning of rules and "culture" is deeply dissuaded in this country. You just go on repeating the same thing even until nobody knows any longer why someone started it in the first place.

I once attended a school that had the exact opposite rule. Girls were required to tie up their hair because having your hair down naturally is seen as “dressing up” and “caring about your appearance too much” and that might “distract you and everyone else from studying”. It’s just ridiculous. If students are so easily distracted by normality, such as exposed necks or people caring about how they look, then the school has done a terrible job educating the students on sorting out their priorities
Edit: I didn’t talk about this from a sexism POV because this particular school had other rules that were equally ridiculous but applied to both male and female students. Example: no sneakers more expensive than $100 (USD) were allowed to be worn
I’m aware that many dress code violations are unfair to females and as a female I feel that. But the point I wanted to make in this specific comment is that, if schools want students to learn self control, then they should educate them on what’s important, instead of fanning out normality masked in alleged “distractions”.

    • @angelalovell5669
      @angelalovell5669 Год назад +39

True. And when those kind of rules show up, it has often been shown to lean heavily in favour of dictating feminine dress which, you know, is unjustifiably discriminative. And in more ways than one! That person at the end was very insightful saying that it's disrespectful to assume a lack of self control in boys. It's disrespectful and it sets a low bar. And, of course, it's even more disrespectful to imply that girls must adjust their appearance for the comfort or convenience of boys.
The fact that this is such a binary system betrays it's weakness. At least if we tried to apply these rules across the board, I think it would become apparent more quickly how useless the whole endeavour is.

      I disagree.
Kids in the teen years can easily be distracted when it’s a mix of both male and female in the classrooms.
It has nothing to do with the school not doing it’s job.
      That is ridiculous.
This is the time when hormones are revving up in young people and it is only part of the natural process that boys will start feeling more attracted to girls and vice-versa.
It’s the time when each is trying to get the other’s attention even if they are unaware they are doing it.
I don’t think it’s right to “blame” anyone or the school.
Different cultures may focus on different things that are considered distracting to the opposite sex.
Whether we agree or disagree is not the point. It is what it is.
Being female, I am all for female emancipation, but you can’t be foolishly blind to human nature either.
Maybe it is a good idea after-all, to have high school age boys and girls in separate classrooms so they focus on learning and not get distracted by each-other.
Then girls do not have to be needlessly and unfairly subjected to certain rules and boys don’t have to be either.
Grade school and college age kids are less likely to be affected so it seems ok to mix males and females without them distracting each other.
Which again, is normal and natural.
The concept of schools is what is not really normal or natural (to lump together a huge mass of young people), and expect them, at the ages when hormones begin moving them towards adulthood, to not feel or experience some distraction, even if they don’t act on it.

You're right. Perverts also hide with this mindset that this is the normal mentality of men. This is not the norm. There are more decent men than there are perverts and maniacs. It's just that society has allowed it to be catered more to the perverts.

It goes back to a point I read in a book once, that the moment you accommodate to a minority who wants to step in and make things worse for society, it's the moment you burn the majority, a majority that is beneficial, the whole that is the whole world. It creates a dystopian reality where we live as if we aren't burning and angry or hurt, even if the world is on fire right before our eyes, cascading down into a bottomless pit of systemic unhappiness.
This reality has already started and has been a thing for centuries. Some come have come in and "put an end" to the burning, and it seems all fine, after the fire, even if a lot is still burnt. Sometimes the fires come back, or maybe they were always there, ready to be ignited with a bit of air, a slight shameful breath whom wants to see the world burn.
This is just a big metaphor relating to what she said.

As a dude, it is kinda messed up to make some guy's neck fetish into every lady's problem. They are the common denominator. They are the ones that need to control their own urges. Not only as a matter of fairness, but to teach him how to properly behave himself in society widely. It also gives these kind of boys the wrong lesson, that their fetish is some one else's problem. When it is their duty to watch their own behavior and they really need to be taught self accountability for their own actions.

I stand by what you said.
There are really messed up regulations placed on girls, and not a lot of meaningful effort in teaching boys proper sexual functioning and management, it's usually a one dimensional stories of, Girls have to cover up, because boys are sexually obsessed machines.
However, i don't think that schools are a place for sexual flaunting, however that should be rigidly defined and constrained to secondary sexual characteristics and common sexual display present in the animal kingdom, and it must be applied to both sexes, if a girl shows up showing cleveage, it's a no go, if a guy shows up with a tight shirt to show off his muscle, it's also a no go.
      That's my idea.
