Whenever I forget my reusable bags, I just punish myself by dealing with the hassle of having no bag (as opposed to buying new ones). Now, I rarely forget my bags. Negative reinforcement for the win!

I think u mean positive punishment. Neg. Reinforcement is the removal of a stimulus to reinforce a behavior. Technically, you're presenting an unwanted stimulus (having to carry things without a bag) in an attempt to decrease a behavior (forgetting a bag). You aren't really reinforcing a behavior; you're trying to decrease one. Its easy to mix up

      @BrookeBaubles 5 лет назад +17

@@AlluKat Negative reinforcement is when something is removed to increase the likelihood of a behavior. My thinking is that I'm removing the convenience of bags to increase the likelihood of me bringing my own bags. I think we might just be seeing things differently.

@@BrookeBaubles Realistically both can be argued. The thing I learned in psy 217 is its all about what you're trying to measure (Whether you're looking at increasing bringing your bags vs. Decreasing forgetting them as the behavior)

I always have to giggle a little when anyone mentions using a wash cloth as a zero waste swap. I am assuming that it’s a generational thing because I am 44 but I have always used a wash cloth. I think that cotton rounds and makeup wipes being used must be a more recent thing. When I was in high school in the early 90s and started needed to remove makeup everyone used Noxema or Ponds cold cream and a wash cloth. I use oil to cleanse now. I just use my hands to apply it and massage it into my face and eyes and then add a little water and wipe it off with a wash cloth. It used less oil then putting the oil onto your cloth to use.

People saying straws are useless is sooooo ignorant. There are so many people with disabilities who need straws (some actually need plastic straws, and that's why instead of just banning plastic straws we need biodegradable plastic straws). Also the zero waste movement is so not inclusive of disabled people. Like hey hi we exist and we don't want to be wasteful but some of us literally can not do all the zero waste things that abled body people can do. Like I try my best but my disability makes it to where I can't be as zero waste as I'd like and it sucks that's why companies also need to be putting in the work and not just individuals.

That’s not ignorance to say that since that isn’t the majority of people. When people make that statement they always refer to fully able bodied people who buy them because they think they have to it or they’re part of a zero waste kit. Like what @sustainably vegan did. Zero waste (including every single one of shelbi’s videos) for the most part encourages to do what you can with what you have. If your disability prevents you from going low waste in some areas that’s beyond your control and I’ve never seen anyone victimize or not include them for it. No ones gonna be like, “oh you have Parkison’s or multiple sclerosis? You still have to buy non plastic packaged food even tho prepackaged and already cut is better for you” So pls stop painting a picture that doesn’t exist.

@@leilanidru7506 wow. Just because you haven't experienced something doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That's like a white person saying racism doesn't exist because they have never experienced it or someone saying that abuse doesn't exist because they have never seen or been abused. You really need to wake up and realize you aren't the only person who exists. I never said every zero waste person is ableist, also I know that shell is chill and supports people doing their best, I love her and her videos i would never say that she is ableist or anything like that. DON’T BUY PRODUCE BAGS!!! Try using your mesh laundry bags. You can still use them normally in the laundry after grocery shopping. That requires no cost, no demand for new products, no sewing. They are lightweight, see through, and already have a zipper to make everything easy and secure. They are literally a better version of the overpriced draw-string produce bags and you already have them
Alternatively, use spare pillow cases (no need to sew or alter them so you can still use them as pillow cases after washing them), or sew some out of recycled fabric.

My mom would get pissed at me for getting mascara and lipstick stains and stuff on hand towels, so I always used to just use toilet paper, but then my friend bought me those rounds and honestly I love them. I don’t wash them in the laundry, I just pour my excess hot water from boiling water for tea and then add a touch of detergent to clean them. You should give the cotton rounds a second chance !! The way best way to use them is to wet the round, use a remover (i prefer oil free micellar water), and let the pad soak over your eye makeup for a few seconds so it can break down the makeup while it's on your face, and lets you get all of the makeup off in one swipe! I personally like them because I feel like I waste less product this way compared to using a full sized rag, since it takes more oil to get it concentrated

I regretted the natural laundry detergent that I bought a long time ago but products improve. Bar shampoo from years ago was terrible but I love shampoo bars now.

I end up using my extra reusable HEB backs as packing fluff for packages I send to family! They live in states where it's really hard to find reusable bags so I send them their way and they get new bags to use for grocery shopping. Helps me pair down because I def have too many!

We tried Toothy Tabs, too.i kind of like them. My daughter does not. I also agree with quality over second hand.

I Absolutely love my silicone reusable straws, they're one of my favourite things. And it is necessary for me, I have a hard time drinking without straws!

You may think you’re zero-waste, but the stuff you’re buying produces a bunch of waste and pollution. Zero-waste also requires the things being all-natural. No synthetics whatsoever. And even then, it gets more complicated because even if things are natural, it doesn’t mean they’re eco-friendly or purely organic. Lush definitely isn’t all-natural or sustainable/eco-friendly. So I guess it depends on what the intention or ultimate goal is.. do you just dislike the burden of taking out the trash? Or is the intention to make the smallest negative environmental footprint?

I find those makeup remover pads too abrasive for my skin. I use the microfiber pads instead -- face halo

I use my reusable cotton rounds every day for toner and to wash them I just put my dirty ones into a mesh bag for washing

Cotton isn't a super great fiber. Takes tons of water and pesticides. Go with hemp or bamboo material if you can

A good way to avoid forgetting your reusable bags, therefore preventing you to buy so many extra unnecessary bags, is keeping all or some reusable bags in your car.

I don't have a car, but I keep a tightly rolled-up nylon bag in my purse. I got it years ago as a give-away item at a pharmacy. I don't use it frequently because I have a shopping trolley for planned grocery shopping, but it still does its job.

Lush had a Clove flavor toothy tab a few years back that I loved. They discontinued it, which sucks. I hate the other flavors.

Another big plus of reusable straws: When you go out for a drink (especially cocktail) you can tell them you won't need a straw :-). Depending on the glass it can be hard to drink without a straw.

All of my useable bags I've gotten for free from events and even the grocery store. I've given then away I had so many. I still don't have produce bag. I did buy reusable utensils but its foldable so fits in my tiny purse.

I wash my socks and cotton rounds in a 'dirty' produce bag... They both need to be washed and I never lose socks this way.

My mom has sensitive teeth and has always used straws.
But no one else in the house will.
She would save the plastic straws from places and wash them but they would degrade going in to the dish washer and tea, coffee. And to me they never seemed clean. Especially since she adds oil to some of her drinks and teas leaves and seeds would get stuck in them.
I bought her reusable straws with a cleaner...... thank goodness, it was a win

Aldi near me did the special buys with those and they sold out in like 3 hours. They need to do it again, super popular. I missed out because I seriously didn’t think my area was into that. Glad they sold out.

With the cotton rounds there are many other uses. I bought some from etsy that are "uglies" and she put a ton of uses on the paper packaging such as wetting them and freezing them for when you have boo boos. Finding other uses for things is helpful to reduce regret lol.

Hey Shelby, this is the first videos I’ve seen from you and you had a lot of really great tips! But I had a quick comment about your tripod buying whoas. Haha. I am a professional videographer and have lots of gear (camera, lenses, tripods etc) and I DEFINITELY am on board with your statement of quality over second hand. However, you can find really great quality items second hand. We actually buy a lot of our gear second hand! The main tip I have for buying tech gear second hand is to do your research, know the brand that you want and be really picky about it. Sometimes it takes a little while to find the exact one you’re looking for but often they show up. Anyway... don’t be discouraged that your tripods weren’t great, just do a little more research on brands next time :)
