I'm a 65 year old guy and I've just found your channel and began watching your carpenters reactions and am enjoying so much hearing a younger person discover her magical voice and records. Yep, 67 tomorrow and an old Hippie and metal head but Karen Carpenter has made me cry for 50+ years now. The most affecting voice I have ever heard, it goes into your soul and touches you in ways like no other. She does to me with her voice what David Gilmour of Pink Floyd does to me on guitar. These people are other worldly musical beings that will never be forgotten. ♩

I'm 48 and have been ALONE for a handful of years in my one bedroom apt with my dog. I've been sooo hurt and disappointed over and over again. I used to be devastated by this. But now, I'm just resigned. This song was so accurate for me. And to respond to Sue in the comment above me... I'm told that I'm very good looking and I am pretty confident in many areas of my life. So, I don't think good looking and confident means you're exempt from this being your theme song. 😕

In a way, this is a good description of my life to date, though I don't have anything like the same problems that Karen had. All I am is short and fat and introverted; in a part of the country where none of that is in any way acceptable. So, this song really kind of hits home for me, even if a master vocalist like Karen hadn't been the one to sing it.

Karen had the most beautiful smooth voice ever. She rarely "belted" out songs but rather, sang just above a whisper. Her brother Richard, was himself, an accomplished composer and music director. Together, their harmonies rocked the 70's, and early 80's. Before Karen was known for her vocals, she was already considered one of America's most talented drummers! I was so blessed to have grown up with their music!

It is very sad to listen to. You never have to hide or apologize for your tears, sweetheart. I wish more men would show us more of their emotions-- always fighting them back, gulping them down, is terrible for human beings, male and female. Thank you for doing this one, and for letting your very appropriate feelings show.

Exactly. It was a big deal. Controversial..At that time, it was thought by "introducing this element" it would change their image. To "Hard rock"That was business side. But these people had made millions already and were followed internationally- especially Japan. What many people don't get is that these people were serious musicians in their own right., especially Richard. Tons of talent and training. These people are accomplished players . They knew behind the scenes editing, dubbing, tracking. Herb Alpert didn't screw them either.

Yes, it’s sad for all of us who don’t have much luck in that department. Karen was only 32 when she passed and being that young she probably would have found the love she desperately wanted. I’ve seen documentaries that seem to indicate that she was kind of marginalized by her Mother in favor of Richard who was the golden boy in her eyes. Some of these issues she had to deal with were obviously deep seated and ultimately manifested in destructive ways. It’s just so sad.

What you don't realize until you really listen to this song is the incredible breath control Karen had. Listen to the lyrics she is singing... they just go on and on and on without a pause, without a chance to grab a breath. Unbelievable! Very few singers of any generation could've pulled it off. And she makes it sound effortless. Try singing along with her... you'll see what I'm talking about...

I can't believe that whoever requested this didn't include the caveat to get a box of tissues before putting it on! You will definitely need them!

I was there "at the beginning" of the Carpenters. I still miss Karen terribly. I know you love them also.

This is my favorite song by her. It describes my feelings so perfectly. And I feel that it describes her as well. Such a sad song.

When you relaize her story and how utterly devistated she was thanks to the family she was trying to please you can understand why she had so much despair.

This song is a window to her real life….it’s heart breaking but true…she was never happy….she was told what to do..even not to play her drums….which she love to do…they told her she has to be in the foreground not the background….

Some people say that the only thing the Carpenters needed to succeed was Karen, but that's like saying, if you want to fly from LA to New York, all you need is a pilot. Karen was a great pilot, maybe the greatest.... but Richard was the airplane. That's why there is an "s" at the end of Carpenter.

Absolutely. I don't think many would have been brilliant enough to come up with the climax of this song.

I learned the other day that Goodbye to Love was the first rock ballad with that style guitar solo. It is credited to Richard Carpenter for it.

What a great reaction. Karen Carpenter can touch you with just her voice, but the lyrics are beyond sad. It’s obvious you felt this song, so sad she passed way too soon.

You've just got yourself another subscriber. I'm sixty years old, been there, done that, got more T-shirts than I can find space for and I tear up when I hear this song. I like that about me. Don't change.

Jim Peluso is the guitarist for the Carpenters. They asked him to go wild on the ending. He played it a couple of times...and Richard said, "Wilder." What an awesome end to a love song.

Richard Carpenter on Goodbye To Love:
“But Karen, along with Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis and John Gary, could take one breath and do the super-human bit where they just kept singing and singing. You are absolutely right in your mention of 'Goodbye To Love', which has some very long phrases. Other singers would come up to Karen and comment on this; I remember John Davidson asking, 'Do you have three lungs?' because Karen took a breath and sang, 'time and time again the chance for love has passed me by and all I know of love is how to live without it…' and that Karen just did naturally. 'Live', as well. It’s not like we had to get it in multiple takes in the studio."
