Paris is a PHENOMENAL trainer. Super supportive and very communicative. He’s client oriented and his strengths are in growing and learning. One of the most insightful trainers I’ve ever come across.
When he said pullups is the key to looking like you lift, this is so true. I truly think i started looking big when I got into daily pushups and pullups. Throw in some band face pulls there too
This is a late comment but can I ask did you bench and do rows when you were doing these daily or was it a case of simply using just that? And if it's the former did you accommodate for volume?
@@owyn4799 I basically did pushups and pull-ups on everyday that was not a day where I hit chest or back at the gym. For example, i my main chest movements are incline bench and weighted dips, and I do these on Tuesdays and Fridays. On every other day of the week, I would do push-ups using a greasing the groove method. Usually 3 sets of 30-40 reps spread out through the day. With pull-ups I would do the same thing. I do pull days on mondays and Thursdays. On these days, my main movements are weighted chins and pendlay rows, as well as upper and lower back work. On the days I’m not hitting pull, I do 3 sets of 12-15 pull-ups spread out through the day. Important note: for me, 30-40 reps of pushups is not much at all, and 12-15 pull-ups are not much at all. I can easily do more than that, but I use these two ranges to just stimulate and not destroy, so that my recovery isn’t shot and my gym days aren’t effected. This is kinda nucleos overload, and also a way of making me recover better, by keeping my glycogen stores high and keeping my nervous system sharp so that then movements I do at the gym don’t feel too foriegnz

Alex, thanks for the encouraging message you posted on my bench video. I set the USAPL state record. It's been several years and I'm approaching 500. People question my natural status but fail to realize I started working with a strength coach at 12. I'm 40 now and can't recall spending more than 2 weeks away from lifting. A lot is possible with 28 years of consistent intense training and optimized programs. My weight hasn't changed much but I've been carb cycling so I'm leaner. Best lifts so far are 465 bench, 560 squat and 650 deadlift. I'm recording my routine for anyone interested. I know a lot but I'm always open to trying new exercises and your videos help me do that. Great points about leverages affecting training volume. We have similar builds and I can bench more frequently and with greater volume compared with deadlifts.
You're a true inspiration, Dominic! Years of consistent, proper training paid off and I have no doubt you'll continue to crush PRs in your 40s. Keep representing the long term grind and showing what's possible 💯💪

Yeah I was thinking for a while now that my lack of progress despite pushing myself every workout is also due to not being in a caloric surplus. Nice to see others having that experience too.
As a novice I’m beyond glad that I was blessed enough to stumble upon creators like AlphaDestony and Bald Omni Man and not get sucked into the vortex of juice head teens

I completely agree with what you said about ohp having carriover to bench, I've been training for a year and in the previous months I trained primarily ohp and Incline bench as an accessory, I still flat benched don't get me wrong but not with the same intensity. So after hitting a 2 plates strict ohp pr I tested my max on the bench and it was 265 although I could have probably done more (the previous pr on bench was 225).

Weighted pull-ups are in my opinion the only exercise you need if you want a jacked back. Years ago when I started out, I simply took a look at the exercises that the majority WASN'T DOING: Pull-ups, dips, squats and deads. Add progressive overload to those exercises and you cannot NOT improve. After Corona hit and the gyms closed, I tried being creative with my back training but I wasn't getting the same stimulus as weighted pull-ups no matter how hard I tried. My back got much softer. Used to pull a bodyweight of 198 Lbs +154 Lbs of added weight as my 1RP. I just got back into it (bought a pull-up bar for my terrace) and am struggling with my bodyweight +70 Lbs (kettlebell). I appreciate the content guys :) It reminded me that you don't change a combination that works.

I definitely feel that having a little higher BF% helps with resiliency in other sports (I mountain bike). Having a little bit of cushion really makes a huge difference if you crash. 👍
regarding benching, I'm the exact opposite as Alex, I struggle like hell off the chest, but when I get it up and the triceps do their work I can lock it out no issue, also I discovered today that I have some really bad leverages for benching, I go way below the bench
Concurrent periodisation hair cuts. Volume and intensity hair cuts rotating the appliance used (one week razor, one week scissors, one week waxing...) XD
I have an easy time with squats. I thought I was quite good when I squated twice my bodyweight. (About 350 lbs) Now I squat that weight for 10 reps. Same story with ohp where I do 4 reps with my bodyweight. I don't feel like I would be close to some limit, but I am content. I have other interests too. So I mostly maintain strength and try to gain some arm size. It sucks to squat such weights and people still suggesting I should start lifting, due to lack of arms.
As someone who just finished Week 8 of Coach Butlers 10 Week Black Swordsman program, I can't say enough about the progress I've made. Currently 28-30% BF at 226 but seeing more musculature than I ever have in my training career. The variations he programs and how each week is planned gave me something new and exciting to look forward each training session, especially when it comes to the hypertrophy/RIR work since it's never been a focus of mine before. Seeing you and Coach Butler talk and really click is truly wonderful and informative to boot. Thanks to you both!
@@BaldOmniMan Fur sure Coach :) I'm looking forward to running it a 2nd time. Having not used RIR in my previous training (mainly variations of 531), it's taken a bit for me to grasp it but this week, it really clicked in what it should feel like and I got to push myself more. Being in a slight 200-300 calorie surplus is also helping as well, even though I'm slowly losing weight so now also playing around with my calories to find my actual surplus.
I was a hyper tuck presser on bench (255) and OHP (135), I put fat grips on the bar and it forced my elbows out to where I can get a good chest and shoulder stimulus. Going to rebuild both to my PRs with my hyper tuck form and see if my delts and chest get larger proportionally to triceps.
My gym was closed again for a month this time and im love weighted callesthenics so it was not that big of a deal and so i did weighted push ups etc in the park and my incline bench pr was 90kg i came back yesterday and my pr is now 95kg pretty easy i think its gonna be 100kg in 4weeks if not earlier
I've was stuck on 135 lbs for a while on ohp. I finally focused on improving my incline bench press for like a month and then I just was randomly able to do 135 for 3 reps on OHP. I was surprised. I guess incline bench press must have had carry over or not doing flat bench for a month made my ohp go up.
One thing that makes little sense to me now is the obsession with the term “strength” and judging a movement by your ability to move more weight on it vs another movement. While I used to agree with this for a long time, after several years in other modalities I realized it’s very flawed. People throw out the term “strength” a lot… and I know what theyre referring to… typically related to basically skill in a movement. It’s all relative to what youre trying to do, right? What makes a big bencher stronger than a farm hard who works with their hands all day? It’s just weird parameters we throw on it. But somehow progressing in a pullup is strength but adding 10lbs on an isolation movement isnt also strength? I used to do exclusively weighted calisthenics and could rep over 100lbs added pullups at a bw of over 195lbs. I do exclusively cable lat pull ins for lats now and my back is bigger than it was before. It’s been 6 years. My lats grew… i worked them more optimally. Am I weaker now bc I dont do heavy weighted pullups? That doesnt make sense. Hypertrophy and strength are not as mutually exclusive as some ppl think. Finally… if youre really hitting a target muscle correctly… you wont need that much weight…. But when you consider factors like magnification, alignment and resistance curve… youre actually lifting MORE than most compounds geared towards that movement. Thanks for coming to my ted talk haha
OHP and dips took my bench from a stalled out 225 baby bench that I had been stuck with for literal years to a slightly more respectable 305 in less than 3 months with the first 45 pounds being added in only 2 weeks. Anyone who even suggests OHP doesn't have carryover to the bench, doesn't lift.
Hard to say cause 305 is magnitudes harder than 225, and if you added 45lbs in 2 weeks to your bench which had been stalled for "literal years" no offence but your previous programming must have been extremely braindead lol
@@jonathancheng3763 Yeah it was. I hadn't even been doing low rep ranges because some "smart" bodybuilders claimed you didn't need them and I was overly concerned about their BS of tearing a pec. Essentially once I got the right mindset realized my 1RM was really a 2 or 3 rep max and started doing exercises to correct my weaknesses I had explosive gains.
Very apparent now after being in and out of gym for over 30 years. Natties carrying significant amount of muscle move significant weight. Makes sense, body adapts to move weight.

The begging was so on point, ive trained and went to the gym for 6ish years . 5 of those years i can say where basically junk , shit that id learn and study from very un reliable sources and also focusing on body building rather than to thing that i really enjoy (strongman/powerlifting) . Learn what you want early and don’t be scared to fail we all start from somewhere
Appreciate the discussion on longer arms and leverages. Ironically for my bench #s right now usually locking out hasn't been an issue (just off the chest to the middle is probably the most grindy part). Thankfully I've got some good safeties for my rack to help work on the sticking points. I never got into doing floor pressing much as I thought the ROM decrease was almost comical (probably 6" off my chest). 5'11" tall and 74.5" wingspan for ref 🙂

Same problem. I can build my squat up really easy, and hardly plateau and my ohp is decent for my size, but my bench sucks and always stalls.

My gym was closed again for a month this time and im love weighted callesthenics so it was not that big of a deal and so i did weighted push ups etc in the park and my incline bench pr was 90kg i came back yesterday and my pr is now 95kg pretty easy i think its gonna be 100kg in 4weeks if not earlier

I've was stuck on 135 lbs for a while on ohp. I finally focused on improving my incline bench press for like a month and then I just was randomly able to do 135 for 3 reps on OHP. I was surprised. I guess incline bench press must have had carry over or not doing flat bench for a month made my ohp go up.
I'm happy with he info I've gotten from AlphaDestiny. Just joined the two plate club in bench today! I want 315 now! Let's watch.

One thing that makes little sense to me now is the obsession with the term “strength” and judging a movement by your ability to move more weight on it vs another movement. While I used to agree with this for a long time, after several years in other modalities I realized it’s very flawed. People throw out the term “strength” a lot… and I know what theyre referring to… typically related to basically skill in a movement. It’s all relative to what youre trying to do, right? What makes a big bencher stronger than a farm hard who works with their hands all day? It’s just weird parameters we throw on it. But somehow progressing in a pullup is strength but adding 10lbs on an isolation movement isnt also strength?
I used to do exclusively weighted calisthenics and could rep over 100lbs added pullups at a bw of over 195lbs. I do exclusively cable lat pull ins for lats now and my back is bigger than it was before. It’s been 6 years. My lats grew… i worked them more optimally. Am I weaker now bc I dont do heavy weighted pullups? That doesnt make sense. Hypertrophy and strength are not as mutually exclusive as some ppl think. Finally… if youre really hitting a target muscle correctly… you wont need that much weight…. But when you consider factors like magnification, alignment and resistance curve… youre actually lifting MORE than most compounds geared towards that movement. Thanks for coming to my ted talk haha
OHP and dips took my bench from a stalled out 225 baby bench that I had been stuck with for literal years to a slightly more respectable 305 in less than 3 months with the first 45 pounds being added in only 2 weeks. Anyone who even suggests OHP doesn't have carryover to the bench, doesn't lift.

Hard to say cause 305 is magnitudes harder than 225, and if you added 45lbs in 2 weeks to your bench which had been stalled for "literal years" no offence but your previous programming must have been extremely braindead lol

@@jonathancheng3763 Yeah it was. I hadn't even been doing low rep ranges because some "smart" bodybuilders claimed you didn't need them and I was overly concerned about their BS of tearing a pec.
Essentially once I got the right mindset realized my 1RM was really a 2 or 3 rep max and started doing exercises to correct my weaknesses I had explosive gains.

Very apparent now after being in and out of gym for over 30 years. Natties carrying significant amount of muscle move significant weight. Makes sense, body adapts to move weight.

5 of those years i can say where basically junk , shit that id learn and study from very un reliable sources and also focusing on body building rather than to thing that i really enjoy (strongman/powerlifting) . Learn what you want early and don’t be scared to fail we all start from somewhere

Appreciate the discussion on longer arms and leverages. Ironically for my bench #s right now usually locking out hasn't been an issue (just off the chest to the middle is probably the most grindy part). Thankfully I've got some good safeties for my rack to help work on the sticking points. I never got into doing floor pressing much as I thought the ROM decrease was almost comical (probably 6" off my chest). 5'11" tall and 74.5" wingspan for ref 🙂
