The carrriage is called "Ammendorf", an absolute classic! More than 30000 were build at VEB Waggonbau Ammendorf in Eastern Gemrany for Soviet Railways, and they still can be found running in all of ex-USSR countries. This one received only a few cosmetic changes, even the original signs in Russian can be seen like "Press pedal to flush the water" or "Cold and hot water pipes stop-cocks locations"
This brings back memories. We did the overnight sleeper from Budapest to Bucharest about 7 years ago. I couldn't figure how the journey took so long on the timetable, but as the ancient train never exceeded 30mph the whole way I soon realised. No chance of actual sleeping (party of 4, each with our own compartment) as how the train managed to stay on the tracks I will never know. Dinner was served by a young man who kept bringing bottles of red wine, and helped us drink them. It all got very drunken, but at least I could smoke in this no smoking carriage. Signs everywhere, but ashtrays on the tables! In the morning, at "breakfast" we found our young waiter asleep on the floor under a blanket. He reluctantly arose to serve us. My partner was very brave and ordered an omelette. It arrived looking disgusting. "What's in it?" I asked. "Eggshell mainly" he said. Marvelous views of the Carpathians though.
i’ve taken that same train and now feel like i massively missed out lol, it was a fairly average experience as sleeper trains go, tho the rolling stock was kinda nostalgic

I love your work Noel, as someone who was in the travel business for decades, I travel 'virtually' with you everywhere. Just one small suggestion though: instead of sticking with the all-pervasive Western fast food outlets in the wonderful places you visit, why not try the local food in each place? Great opportunity for interaction with fellow travellers and locals, colourful content (entertaining whether you like what you're eating or not..!!), and a chance to broaden your culinary horizons and benefit the local economy! Just a thought...
Sometimes, you're in a rush and you just gotta power down the animal fat for energy. I agree, try the local cuisine when you can, but sometimes you have to catch a train first. Not ever vacay is leisurely.

I appreciate you review some long train ride to complement the airlines travel. I love using both . I could say that I find it difficult to have a good night sleep on train but it is not so bad if I compare to a 8 hours flight in economy class on some airlines.
That's a real classic, amazed it's still running. Had my first Caledonian Sleeper trip last week and was surprised that was quite so bumpy. Not sure what I was expecting but I didn't expect to almost feel seasick. So I don't envy you this trip.
On CS, you’ve got to make sure you’re as close to the middle of the carriage as you can be if you’re a lighter sleeper. It’s much quieter and a bit smoother. Also, you’ll get a better night’s sleep on the highlander going northbound, as you start the journey on the smoother west coast mainline, compared to trying to get to sleep on the jointed tracks of the highlands. After a few times I’m quite used to it, and sleep well now ☺️
That's night trains for you! I've been fortunate enough to do quite a few now - mostly in Eastern Europe but sometimes in Scandinavia - and I absolutely love them. Something about the repetitive clunking and the slight swaying gets me (often an insomniac) to sleep in minutes. And I love being able to lie down and look out of the window while I'm reading. I hope you have a better experience with them in future - they're so much less stressful usually and I genuinely think there's something magical and old-fashioned (but in a good way) about a night train
My dad was a train driver here in the UK. He went on the sleeper train from Scotland to London (as a railway employee we get very reduced rates) and he complained that the driver was using the straight air brake and this made for an uncomfortable ride. After watching this I think he doesn’t know how lucky he was ! Not exactly a relaxing train journey eh Noel ? Great video as always. 👍👍
Was your dad working with electric or diesel? Because if it was an electric locomotive then yes there’s no need for air brakes to stop a passenger train.

In Australia each state has different railway gauges so changing bogies between states was a pretty standard occurrence. Every night the trains between Sydney and Melbourne needed to stop and change bogies at the border city of Albury.
I've done this train before too, and back to Bucharest. They changed the wheels too, but I felt so weirded out when the guards took my passport and left for an hour!
FYI the city Iasi just before the Moldovan border is pronounced Yash (not ee-ahs-ee). Also seeing those train cars get lifted from the outside is also a sight to see. And Ungheni (the city where the wheels get changed) is a great place to visit!

If you want the real deal with changing bogies take the Train from Hook of Holland to Moscow, change bogies in the middle of the night at Minsk. Change trains in Moscow for Trans Sib to Beijing. Change bogies back to standard guage in the middle of the night on Mongolian/Sino border but this time accompanied to Chinese martial music and flashing lights. The common denominator being you always change bogies in the middle of the night. It's what they do! Great series. thanks
Really great video….. did remind me of some fairly ropey European trains back in the 80s…..Italian coaches which kept the wooden boards but forgot the cushioning. 2 favourite bits 1) the loo review for all the wrong reasons ! and 2) background music is just fab !
Ps another comment re changing the wheels reminds me in my youth the Catalan Tango train used to be the only train between France and Spain as it’s wheels were specially designed to change at the border because of gauging. Nowadays you can simply get the TGV from Paris to Barcelona direct. Different Times !
There is retro Noel, and there is outdated. Still I would love it and given my age I can actually remember hen trains were about mass public transport rather than luxury travel . Thanks for the video Noel, looking forward to the next one.
In some parts of the world trains still are mass transport Duncan. India and Pakistan particularly and also in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. I expect the same would be the case in many other countries in Asia.
@@rais1953 your 100% right. I lived and worked in India for some time and used the train a lot. Basic, but cheap and ON TIME all of the time. Nothing wrong with basic but westerners would not put up with not having WiFi or a plug even on a typical commute these days. ✌️
Looks like you might have been a bit unlucky. The berth over the bogey (wheels) is always the most uncomfortable. If you can, try to get something in the middle of the coach.
In fact, these cars were made in the GDR, but were widely used in the USSR. I traveled on such a carriage with my family on a summer vacation from Leningrad to Sochi in the early 1980s. The one way trip took 2 days.
Absolutely brilliant. I actually laughed out loud when you opened the door to your berth on the train. What a journey. Love these train blogs. More please xxx

P.s I still think you should make some stickers etc saying Approved By Noel Phillips for airlines etc to display with their liveries.😀
Noel what a brilliant review Bucharest railway station looked very colourful. Your train journey seemed like a fun adventure too . I’m already looking forward to your next vlog 😀👍
I was wondering when you were going to pull out the bed... but there was not one to pull out! As for changing the wheels that's the weirdest thing I've ever seen! Viz the loo could have been worse, many are just a hole in the floor as you will know. When I went to Russia we stayed in what was described as a "country lodge" and it had Soviet beds. This is basically MDF with a thin mattress. So glad to get home to British beds. It was a great experience, I'd do it all over again, but I'd probably book my own accommodaton.
I'm originally from Moldova. Been to Romania several times. I've only been to Bucharest once. I'm not sure about now, but at the time Bucharest did not seem that safe. This was 22 years ago.

I eat at that Burger King quite frequently since it's near my workplace. Funny to see it on your channel 😂 By the way the border patrol said "I hope the camera is not recording" 😂
Noel superb vlog as always A tour of Bucharest would be interesting The cabin on the train reminds me a certain hotel room you stayed in not to long ago
10:12 ... How wonderful was that, a Stalin stained matrass from a 1943 meeting on a trip to Sochi, , Bald and Bankrupt must be furious. How very dare you, the English Rose bedding were for him on this very soviet First Class Train 🤣 The wheels on the train go on and off, on and off, on and off 😁
Great video on the soviet train from bucharest to chinisau of course the most intresting part of the video was seeing the carriages being lifted up and them changing the wheels from european standard to russian railway guage. The hotel at the end was quite luxurious and I guess it didn't cost too much to stay in there either
That journey must of been a nightmare. I know here in the UK the sleeper has a maximum speed of 80mph so your less likely to get thrown about going over points and at curves. I liked your explanation how it was like being in a washing machine haha! I can't believe they wake you up for your passport, not that you had any sleep and the engineer coming into your cabin during the bogie change! Another great video.
Right before watching this video I viewed trek trendy on his fancy orient express train. . Boy what a difference ☺ I must say your video is much more entertaining. Love that mattress you pulled out from under the seat 🤪
Actually not new boogies, but ajustable ones, Talgo does them and they just pass on a machine that unlocks them and then increases or decreases their width then locks them in place again.
So super cool- looks like "fun"...love the music you find for Eastern Europe/Russia trips. Unbelievable changing the under carriage wheels, wow! The Berd's Hotel looks great! Thanks for this trip!!!
There's a break-of-gauge from western/central to eastern Europe. One in Tornio, one at Terespol, one in Uzhhorod, and one at Galati as seen in the video, among several others not listed.
A very nice and interesting film it´s interesting that all those boggie changes on passenger trains are made in the night waking the passengers up. I think i know the reason they have to uncouple the whole train is that they change the couplers too.
Love a good train ride. Just wish it was cheaper in the UK. Thinking of things Soviet, suddenly seeing loads of adds for Baltic air. I'd never heard of them before this year, any chance of a review 🙂

Change bogies back to standard guage in the middle of the night on Mongolian/Sino border but this time accompanied to Chinese martial music and flashing lights. The common denominator being you always change bogies in the middle of the night. It's what they do!
Great series. thanks
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Quite an intrusive first class compartment there! Great vid, so much character in that train and a nice Bald nod is always welcome too.
Your a brave man. That train was sketchy. Thanks for the interesting journey.
You braved that train for our viewing pleasure , hats of Noel enjoyed as always and see you on the next one 👍
Noel, it was good to meet you at the In the Hangar show this past weekend. As I said, you gained a new subscriber... :-)
Same to you, thank you!
Noel, very very funny. Lifting the train to fit the track width. Really funny.
😂😂 loved it. Was in tears with your washing machine journey terminology. Gold 👍
😁
The change of wheels thing is crazy and a lot of effort, you definitely get your moneys worth w that 👏👏👏
Wow! ! What a kind of extraordinary experience!! I laughed a lot with the " 'washing machine' expression regarding the train.😊 😅The changing of the wheels are really unbelivable!! Thanks for sharing🙏😆
You're good! Lol. loved the smooth way you pretended to turn the camera off. Made me laugh so much.
I think I noticed a mirror attached to the inside of the door, isn't that right? are the ceilings fixed, or could it be pushed up?
I have to watch this again. One of my favorites!
Like you said Noel probably best not to think about what the stains are on that mattress 😬 thanks for another great video
Ok in my honest opinion I truly think you are way above Sam Chui and he has millions of followers, your content is by far much better and that isn't because of where you go or what you record it's simply because of who you are and how you show it to your followers, your interested in who ever you see and where ever you go and that makes us feel apart of your journey, I really do think that your one of if not the best travel vlogger out there that is still a genuine, honest hardworking person and what really shows in every single vlog is you enjoy doing what you do and that makes all the difference.
Noel what is the one train trip you would love to do in the future and why. Also what do you prefer, trains or planes?
Cool video. Enjoyed the background tunes. I like retro stuff so I found this very interesting.
I'm originally from Moldova. Been to Romania several times. I've only been to Bucharest once. I'm not sure about now, but at the time Bucharest did not seem that safe. This was 22 years ago.
Bucharest is safe these days
Noel
This is absolutely amazing
It brought back memories for me.
I went on a youth mission trip to Moldova and the train journey was fun.
Thank you for making my heart sing.
It was amazing 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I eat at that Burger King quite frequently since it's near my workplace. Funny to see it on your channel 😂
By the way the border patrol said "I hope the camera is not recording" 😂
I was expecting Noel to bump into Bald, grinning like a cat because it's a Soviet train and Simon Wilson who sneaked onto the train for a free ride
What about Harald bringing some Gongo or Fireball on board too?!
Noel superb vlog as always
A tour of Bucharest would be interesting
The cabin on the train reminds me a certain hotel room you stayed in not to long ago
please come to romania
You should do a competition to allow a subscriber to come to one of your trips to travel with you!
Gara de Nord. I remember it well. In 1991 it was even more 'fun'!
At least you didn't have to take your own light bulb 💡
Multumesc foarte mult! 🇷🇴
10:12 ... How wonderful was that, a Stalin stained matrass from a 1943 meeting on a trip to Sochi, , Bald and Bankrupt must be furious.
How very dare you, the English Rose bedding were for him on this very soviet First Class Train 🤣
The wheels on the train go on and off, on and off, on and off 😁
This is some quality content. Nothing better than grabbing a beer and watching a Noel train vid. Great stuff mate!
Glad you enjoyed it
Love your approach and diversified content. Great attitude too.
I appreciate that!
Cant help but think of the joys of SCAT when that music is brought out
Great video on the soviet train from bucharest to chinisau of course the most intresting part of the video was seeing the carriages being lifted up and them changing the wheels from european standard to russian railway guage.
Fun and unique report. Hotel was nice and unexpectedly modern.
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Right before watching this video I viewed trek trendy on his fancy orient express train. . Boy what a difference ☺ I must say your video is much more entertaining. Love that mattress you pulled out from under the seat 🤪
Great vlog as always. Between France and Spain they drive thru like a train wash, and zip. The new boogies are in place. Be safe!
Mate I absolutely love your videos. Absolute best out there.
Glad you like them!
I look forward to your videos every week. Can wait to see your next adventure. Keep up the amazing work you do on these videos for us Mr. Philips.
Glad you like them!
That entire train experience had me so cringed out with that archaic color scheme!! What a brave gent you are! You always seem to prevail 🙂🙂🙂😁
Only Noel could manage to find a train that goes airborne. Thanks for the video, really interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it
Noël: “look at this lovely Soviet retro themed train”. It’s not Soviet retro, it ís Soviet 😁
I love how our beloved host takes the weirdest/lousiest means of travel but treats himself to the best hotel in every town!
This is a very daring adventure, but I kind of wish you visited some of the shops outside of the Romania train station also!
Great video! The way the sleeper car was geared up , would you not sleep above the door in the little compartment ? As it has its own curtains?
Been to Bucharest a few years ago and was told Gare De Nord there was dodgy.
Thats train omg so soviet , Eastern block glad u survived it . The deco was awesome lol. Mind u u can't knock that Hotel room for £40
Looking forward to the next one
