It was great to hear him thank his father in his acceptance speech. For those who don’t know, Robert Earl Jones left the family before James Earl Jones was born. The two didn’t meet until the 1950s. While they were never able to have a complete father-son relationship, due to their estrangement, Robert Earl Jones never gave up in giving his son advice on how to break into the acting world and was nothing short of supportive of his son’s acting career. Great to see that, 11 years after his father’s death, James Earl Jones never forgot about him and took the time to thank him.
I went to school with his kids, and me and my parents also bumped into him a few times there. I was really young though so had no idea who he was and how cool getting to meet him was at the time.
Mr. Jones has so much class that not only did he thank those who helped him as an actor but thanked the police officers who did security for him. I tip my hat to ya sir.

He stutters, as we all know by now; he's said that it's no problem if he's reading a prepared speech or his lines in a movie, but if he's casually talking, the stutter flares up every so often. Could be he was trying to speak carefully so that it didn't creep into this moment.
