Hey friends! Help us get the word out that this 'Hack' works - please share across social media so we can show the world this amazing garlic peeling trick!
I was on Twitter, until last June. My account got knackered, and I was not able to get back on it.
Are you going to make a video in the future on the pineapple hack where you peel off the individual tidbits one by one, by hand? :P Might be good to show how that viral sensation just isn't worth the effort.
My understanding is that you need a very specific variety of pineapple for that to work - If I can track one down, I'll show the difference.
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking I read that too, or it at least needs to be extremely ripe, would be nice to point people to a trusted resource on the matter if they ever bring it up again in the future.
Have you seen the one where they shake the garlic in a bowl to peel it?
I have no words, amazing. No clickbait, right to the point. This channel deserves millions of subscribers
Thank You!
Bless you for actually explaining how this madness works.
Use plastic box for food put inside garlic and shake it when it closed.
It's 100 times better way that this one.
I was so disappointed when i tried the viral video, and it worked only for the large pods, not the little ones.. but he explained well...
@@kat0197 I did just that last night and worked like a charm !
will never peal garlic any other way !
I just pry the bulb apart then cut the root of and squeeze the top. Shoots right out.
Interesting method you explained.
Thanks for this, I tried it and found a safer method to break the bottom part - instead of a knife to cut the bottom, use an apple corer - worked really well.
I'm one of those weirdo's that doesn't look at twitter... so thanks for sharing :)
I didn't see it either, but I like Glen's explanation to how it works. Well done, sir.
Same here
Looks like youre getting ready for the vampire wars with all that garlic
As a kindred, the garlic thing is completely overblown and not true at all.
@A G Step into my parlor said the -spider- vampire to the -fly- mortal.
But no, seriously, with the amount of blood transfusions I've had, I might as well be a literal vampire.
That might explain why his wife didnt show up in this video.

Dyu know Larry?
Wow! I just watched this, tried it and it worked first time! I also managed to do it by only severing the root of one clove, and the bit that was left attached just popped off afterwards, leaving the rest of the bulb intact. Brilliant!
Folded steel knives help with this method too because it makes you look cooler while doing it.
I’ve never seen this method before, I usually break up the cloves, put them in a mason jar and shake vigorously. I’ll give this a try though.
Thanks, Glen (and your wife)! I don't remember seeing (if it was there) the loosening the cloves from the roots bit on the original video. That seems key. You sharing this video is quite helpful, as usual. Grazie!
Your ideas are fantastic. I especially like that every episode you start off doing something and then are almost surprised by the camera... "Oh hello friends!". Keep it up. love your work.
My secret is buying a huge bag of peeled garlic from Costco.
That is the ultimate hack.
I heard Chinese prisoners peel that but who knoes
Whitney Sanders that’s true, I watched a thing on it
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking boss Chinese garlic very toxic..Bec how they are grown
Steve Roginski prisoners are peeling your garlic....not nice!
This really is life changing, thanks a lot! :)
And for those of us who you mentioned who steer clear of very sharp knives and hard garlic, get one of those silicone tubes to easily peel garlic. You pop the unpeeled clove in the tube, roll it on the counter a couple of times while pressing down, and shake out the peeled clove. Probably just as quick as your demo and no risk at all. Just another method. 😊 Thanks to both of you for your videos.
Straight to the point! I love this vid and subscribed immediately in the first few seconds, just love that it has no long introduction.!!
GREAT tip! TY for going through MANY heads of garlic to demonstrate exactly how to peel garlic effectively!
One day I’m going to walk into a store in Canada and find “Glen’s Garlic Bread” on the shelf.
Loving the videos, you’re an absolute content machine.
Bro. You just saved Canada. America. And the rest of the world. Culinary school didn't teach me this. But you did! Love.
Thank you sir... I use a lot more garlic a lot more often than the average person and this will help a ton!
My parents and I eat garlic like no ones business SO THIS IS PERFECT
I tried this last night. Its so cool.
This is absolutely superb. Thank you for demonstrating this properly!
Mind. Blown.
I love eating garlic but hate working with it. This just might be the thing for me. Thanks for posting this vid.
Glen, I somehow came across your channel on a rainy day and now you’ve inspired me to cook and I love it! Please could you show us a version of an English ‘toad in the hole’ recipe? I’m intrigued to see how you do. Once again, thank you for sharing your expertise in a clear and concise manner. Love it
Maybe - I'll have to figure it out.
Glen & Friends Cooking awesome. Love seeing the rise of your channel, thoroughly deserved :)
Toad in a hole? You mean Birdie in the Nest? Eggs in a Basket? Eggs in the Nest? Popeye? Bullseye Eggs? *Googles* Huh... Birdie in the Nest is called Toad in a Hole in some places in the states, but in the UK it literally has sausage, which actually makes bloody sense. I still don't understand why some places call a fried egg made in a cutout of a slice of bread Toad in a Hole, it's never made sense, and now having seen that the UK version uses some actual meat for the "Toad" I feel extra justified in feeling the way I do when people call Birdie in the Nest, "Toad in a Hole."
Absolutely brilliant!! THANK YOU!! Just confirmed on first full clove of garlic.. got 5 more to do.. but sooo simple, now, that is :-)
Still amazed by that device you have to make fried chicken. You have awesome kitchen gadgets.
Finally! A tried and tested way of doing my least favorite chore in the kitchen! Now I can go pick up that 3lb bag of garlic at Costco and know I can knock it off in a jiffy! Thanks Glen!
This is the best method of garlic peeling so far.
Glad I stopped by. Thank you for showing me this neat way of pealing garlic
Love that we can always learn something new, 29 years and many years around chefs in kitchens, this the first time seeing garlic being peeled like this, nice
My life is now #blessed. Please make your favorite #GarlicBread next Glen
I’ve watched over a dozen of your videos. THIS is the one that made me subscribe to the channel. Brilliant work, sir!
I’m trying that today. Thanks for the straightforward video x
Amazing! That's great. I have worked in restaurants where I have done 1000s. Wished I knew this then.
Have you seen the video on You Tube on how to cut a pineapple into bite size pieces with little or no effort. Its called how to Pull Apart a Pineapple. I have tried it and it works. No knife is needed. However, it's important to have a ripe pineapple. You don't even have to deal with the core.
I love your videos. Thanks.
I kinda hope Glen does a video on this lifehack too showing, "yes you can do it, but maybe you shouldn't bother."
Two years after this posted I finally found it! Will try this.
Awesome hack Glen !!! Thanks so much for sharing...can't wait to tell my son who loves to cook...cheers from Ontario
I love good tips. This garlic tip is the best one I've seen, I think, ever. Now I can toss out that silly rubber tube.
Thanks Glen, this is a super duper tip...
I can't wait to try this the next time I make garlic soup. Also loving the hat!
That makes perfect cense !Thank you I'm off to peel a tone of garlic , I'm fermenting garlic in honey today but I usually dread the peeling !
At Safeway you can buy them pre-peeled in a 1 lb bag. I found this to be the easiest!
Garlic life hack #2 and #3:
When using a garlic press, don't remove the skin. Put the whole thing into the press. The garlic will come out as you press, the skin is left in the press and easily removed (typically comes out as you open the press again). Added bonus: press becomes a lot easier too clean.
When cleaning one's hands after working with garlic, don't use hot water as it will cook the garlic on the skin. Use cold water instead and you don't have to suffer garlic smelling fingers.
But what if I want to season my skin before I bake in the summer sun?
I'm a garlic lover. Doesn't bother me to have garlic in my fingers long after. Especially if it's a good meal!
If you run your hands over stainless steel when washing the smell disappears.
This seems great for individual cloves!
I've been using the metal bowls/mason jar trick for a while but I always end up with a whole bulb of garlic peeled and the last 25% of it sprouts before I get a chance to use it. I'll have to give this a shot.
Great video. Also reinforces the point(pun intended) that a sharp knife in the kitchen is safer than a dull knife. Thanks for posting.
Hi Glen, Thank You!!! I use a lot of garlic when I cook. I am from Toronto, however I travel to Europe several times a year. I have seen many methods of peeling garlic. This is one of, or perhaps the best!! Great, I subscribed so I cant wait for more!! The hat,,, yup! yup!! That's what I wear!!!!!! Cheers, Peter
thanks for fuguring it out...need to peel alot of garlic so tjis will make my job easy...brilliant
Hey it’s just me.
I like your idea! Now I can eat more garlic much quicker😆
I'm about to make a garlic confit so I'm very happy to have found this! Thank you!
Thank you it works . I had to peal a lot of fresh garlic 🧄 it was a pain. Thank
Thank you again.
Thanks for bringing back the hope 😆😉, I'll try again
I'm not convinced it's faster, easier, more efficient, or safer. That's a lot of hand held knife work, and you're losing more garlic than if you cut each clove individually. After the cloves are trimmed, it's easy anyhow. For fun, I just went into the kitchen, pulled a clove off the bud, trimmed the base, stuck my paring knife into the clove (with the grain, on the cutting board, held in place by other hand) and twisted. The clove split in half, as did the skin- which fell away. Pretty easy and fast. Will test more when cooking.
That is awesome! Hadnt seen that method before. I will share that one
At the restaurant we just shake them up in a jar and it separates pretty well. We have to wash the veggies anyway so skin that does stick gets fished out.
LOVED this ... isn't perfect but WAY faster than peeling
Very quick response to the viral video 👍 interesting method. Will definitely try. Thanks for showing us how to do it :)
This is going to save me some time and pain. Thanks for sharing!
NOWWWwwwww I learn this. In the 90s i helped a friend who's chefs left the small tropical island restaurant. (Some people cannot hang with island life) So I became a chef by fire for about 6 months. Great exerience. We made tons of fresh pesto about 2 times a week. Id have garlic paper to my elbows all night afterwards. Yeah this was long before tiktok. I till love making pesto.
Veeerrryyy useful/handy technique!
Thank you!
My eyes got so big as I watched the thumbnail! Good share Glen!
Go Julie!! Thanks Glen.
wow...I hope this works for me...I'm peeling a kilo of garlic for sausage, takes a lot of time... I'll definitely try this...
Best one I've seen! You have this mastered!
Thank you. You just solved my garlic dilemma.
Pealing garlic is why I buy jared minced garlic. I will try this.
Can’t wait to try it!!!!! Thanks👍
Thanks, great for canning season! 🇨🇦😊
I feel like this is something I'm going to internalise and in five years time... pretend I came up with.
I'm so excited to try this!
Gotta try this. I bought some locally grown garlic and want to preserve it.
Great technique. Thanks.
Does severing the root from the bulbs reduce shelf life or can you prep them on advance and just use per say 2 one day and some another week?
Have you ever tried to shake it on a closed pan or something like it? Works very fine too
Life-changing.
That is magic!!!
Thanks. I’m in awe!
Thanks you two!!
I'm curious to knoyw, would a butter knife work better or even the same? Less lost fingers and thumbs. I'm going to try this for sure. I really dislike peeling garlic and resort to buying already peeled garlic from the grocery store which I'm sure is not as tasty as fresh. Thank you for sharing your expertise. :)
Great video. How was this described on Twitter? Is there video / pictures on it now?
Thank you sir. Another great video as always.
MIND. BLOWN.
Sure gonna try this! Too bad I lost that recipe I always wanted to make: "chicken with 101 garlic cloves".
It was in a german cooking magazine, years ago, bringing a story about an annual "garlic festival" that is hold in a city in the US. Never found that magazine again.
thanks for this. I had limited success trying the other day. wouldn't the double bowl shake method still be faster for lots of bulbs?
Wonderful, thanks!
Definitely not faster given that prep unless you need them fully intact in the cooking. As I always chop/grind/squeeze as next step, it‘s not needed. Taking out a clove, precisely cutting the root end, compressing the clove with the knife while pulling the peel from the top always works and is quick and smooth.

He's probably shading so many people right now. Me included since I've had my fair share of culinary cuts.
Fantastic, I eat garlic daily. This is great.
Awesome! Thanks for the extra trick :)
May I ask what knife brand are your using?
Calphalon Katana Series VG1 3.5" paring knife
I have a variation on this method. I put the garlic on the chopping board and and put the flat of a knife on it then whack it hard with my hand. It peels itself in one go
Nice method, thanks for the tip
Omg..mind Blowen..
This needs to go viral
Kai - Lets make that happen! Reddit is probably a great place to drop this video.
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking on it!
It's the least I could do for my favorite RUclipsr :)
@@kaimurtagh Thank you!

Jajajajaja!!!!! Muy buenooooooo!!!!
La verdad que no conocía este truco. Felicidades por el canal, muy bueno lo tuyo!
It won't be any coincidence when there is a hummus video tomorrow
Do you think the, shaking between 2 mixing bowls method would work better than this after cutting the roots?
Great work!
Try using your index finger at the end of the paring knife as a physical stop for extra safety. Eyeball how far you'd like the tip to penetrate the garlic cloves and rest your finger there, with only that much blade exposed. This should help prevent a runaway knife tip and give you much better control in case something slips unexpectedly. A shorter knife might even work better, such as a tourne. Either way, this looks like a fantastic trick. Back in my culinary days, I'd just order peeled garlic cloves by the boatload (expensive, but certainly saves on labour), but for a home cooking hack, this is dynamite.
Peeled garlic cloves will last well in the freezer, just use a Ziplock bag and sqaueeze out any excess air.
Ginger can also be peeled easily using a teaspoon...
