Are you going to make a video in the future on the pineapple hack where you peel off the individual tidbits one by one, by hand? :P Might be good to show how that viral sensation just isn't worth the effort.

    • @GlenAndFriendsCooking

My understanding is that you need a very specific variety of pineapple for that to work - If I can track one down, I'll show the difference.

You pop the unpeeled clove in the tube, roll it on the counter a couple of times while pressing down, and shake out the peeled clove. Probably just as quick as your demo and no risk at all. Just another method. 😊 Thanks to both of you for your videos.

Toad in a hole? You mean Birdie in the Nest? Eggs in a Basket? Eggs in the Nest? Popeye? Bullseye Eggs? *Googles* Huh... Birdie in the Nest is called Toad in a Hole in some places in the states, but in the UK it literally has sausage, which actually makes bloody sense. I still don't understand why some places call a fried egg made in a cutout of a slice of bread Toad in a Hole, it's never made sense, and now having seen that the UK version uses some actual meat for the "Toad" I feel extra justified in feeling the way I do when people call Birdie in the Nest, "Toad in a Hole."

Garlic life hack #2 and #3:
When using a garlic press, don't remove the skin. Put the whole thing into the press. The garlic will come out as you press, the skin is left in the press and easily removed (typically comes out as you open the press again). Added bonus: press becomes a lot easier too clean.
When cleaning one's hands after working with garlic, don't use hot water as it will cook the garlic on the skin. Use cold water instead and you don't have to suffer garlic smelling fingers.

I'm not convinced it's faster, easier, more efficient, or safer. That's a lot of hand held knife work, and you're losing more garlic than if you cut each clove individually. After the cloves are trimmed, it's easy anyhow. For fun, I just went into the kitchen, pulled a clove off the bud, trimmed the base, stuck my paring knife into the clove (with the grain, on the cutting board, held in place by other hand) and twisted. The clove split in half, as did the skin- which fell away. Pretty easy and fast. Will test more when cooking.

Definitely not faster given that prep unless you need them fully intact in the cooking. As I always chop/grind/squeeze as next step, it‘s not needed. Taking out a clove, precisely cutting the root end, compressing the clove with the knife while pulling the peel from the top always works and is quick and smooth.

Try using your index finger at the end of the paring knife as a physical stop for extra safety. Eyeball how far you'd like the tip to penetrate the garlic cloves and rest your finger there, with only that much blade exposed. This should help prevent a runaway knife tip and give you much better control in case something slips unexpectedly. A shorter knife might even work better, such as a tourne. Either way, this looks like a fantastic trick. Back in my culinary days, I'd just order peeled garlic cloves by the boatload (expensive, but certainly saves on labour), but for a home cooking hack, this is dynamite.

Peeled garlic cloves will last well in the freezer, just use a Ziplock bag and sqaueeze out any excess air.
Ginger can also be peeled easily using a teaspoon...
