  • Ever wondered what's involved with retrofitting a hydraulic levelling system to your caravan?
    Last month, we took our Elddis Crusader Storm to see the team at Out and About Caravan and Motorhome services, who completed a full Retrofit of the full E&P Caravan Level System.
    In this video, we show you the steps a professional dealer takes in this install.

    Had a full system fitted by this workshop in June 2022. Very professional service and communications, very pleased with the system and the full explanation at handover. While these systems come at a price, remember you are looking at 2 guys labour for a day on a caravan, there is no doubt these need to be fitted by people who know what they are doing and this video prompted me to use this company, even though it was a 3 hour drive, the workshop also recommended an overnight stopping site just 10 minutes away, ready for an early start next morning, that was also superb. What you will find is that a caravan needs to be in a real nose down position to start with, otherwise the system will not activate

    A bit of advice for E & P we have a caravan which was out of warranty end of March, last week end our system failed we had to stay on site for an extra night due to not being able to retract the steadies .
    Luckily for us and our saviour Matt from Heritage Caravan services came early next morning ,
    Seemed to be electronic problem but there was no indication of any emergency retract system apart from in manual , it said optional extra manual pump which we didnt have and was not offered .
    But our saviour Matt crawled under van to the main hub of system and took weather cover off .
    As this caravan is a sited caravan and never towed everything was clean as a whistle.
    And guess what Matt notices a sticker which says EMERGENCY RETRACT SYSEM !
    Matt noticed cable was heading to and around the battery box , checks that out nothing so inside we go lifts the seating up and there she is a cable going to a switch and guess what it says?
    The button gets pressed and yes up the steadies come , we still havent resolved the problem yet but have a local E & P service engineer coming out next week .
    So my advise please to E & P please leave some sort of literature of you product indicating where this is , it could have caused mayhem for us if it wasnt for good old Matt from Heritage caravan services and highly recommended

      Thanks for the comment. We were fully aware of where our emergency retract was installed. This is something which should be discussed and you should be informed of its location by your fitted or caravan dealer.

    This is a brilliant piece of kit, my initial thought was if this was available at dealer level, it would open Caravanning or improve Caravanning for disabled people.
    Secondly I’m shocked you guys don’t have more subscribers! You deserve thousands & I really hope you get there.

    gets me how a young lad would need this system (unless back troubles)and sorry if you have. heavy van and heavy vehicle to tow it so would guess you've passed your towing test as would be well over the 3500kg max weight for somebody so young. good video as was wondering how this is fitted. never seen rivets used in timber or are they special for the job. sorry many questions.

    Great video on such a great bit of kit and how it's all put together, I have always wondered how the corner steadies were fitted to lift the van as well as steady it. Keep up the good work👍🏻 must say it's nice to watch a video that isn't a repeat by everyone else 6 vloggers all doing the same stuff together it's getting boring......this was nice and fresh😎

    Nothing new here, I had a four point hydraulic leg system installed onto my old Ace Ambassador caravan in 1984 by Saltofix Engineering in Oswestry, Shropshire. OK, they asked me if I would let them fit their prototype experimental package to my caravan and if after their testing, I would accept it back with the hydraulics still fitted. End result was very acceptable, one manually operated pump fitted to the tow bar A frame and a 4 way control valve which would activate either all, or individual ram/legs. It worked very well. The legs had return springs fitted so when the hydraulic pressure was zero'd, the legs reverted to their closed positions all by themselves.

    Hi There, just came across your VLOG while researching this kit excellent thanks and also with the dealer that I was thinking of getting to do the work so a win win, very informative. Please can I ask, have you used this on a grass pitch and did you get any sinking over time? Thanks again.

      Thanks Linda! We've so far found it to be a great piece of kit, really takes the effort out of levelling and fitting our secure wheel locks.

    Great video guys, thanks for sharing. Really interesting to see the install process. Just wondering what the noseweight of a Crusader Storm is? I'd be interested to know if fitting this system had an impact on that. 👍

      Thanks for the feedback! Regarding noseweight, we’ve noticed that it is naturally quite heavy at the front. Even when we picked the van up from the dealers empty, the noseweight was his in excess of 100KG. Fortunately, given the location of the transverse island bed, it’s relatively easy to manipulate the noseweight to what you need it to be for your limits.
      The Level system has been suggested to at around 20KG net additional weight when you deduct the original steadies. During the process, I got my hands on some of the components and the weights are not huge. The hydraulic lines and very narrow and hydraulic reservoir very small, all contributing to less weight. It’s clear that this is a well thought out system. The only influence on noseweight is the addition of the big foot steadies at the front which add a couple of KG, but these are offset by new steadies to the rear. As the axle jacks and control module are installed inside the rear axle, these shouldn’t have an effect on noseweights!

      Thanks for your reply, that’s really useful to know.
      Your comments re nose weight are interesting, empty, our own MK1 Unicorn is above 100kgs too and has to be laden in order to meet my vehicles max nose weight limit. It’s strange that even though some UK manufacturers state their products max nose weights are 100kg they are in breach of this when factory delivered. Adds to the fun having to get the balance right doesn’t it 😉.
      Thanks again for sharing the video, and enjoy the new level syetem. 👍

    Great video, very interesting. With all the extra's on the van you can't have much of the original payload left?

    • @youngtourers2078
      @youngtourers2078  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the comment! We've up plated our Crusader to 1900KG, it gives us 260KG to play with. We've got just over 100KG's in extras fitted to the van. Beyond this, we actually travel very light. BBQ's, Chairs, Ground sheets etc, all travel with us in the car. You are right though, we're pretty close to the MTPLM but keep an eye on this at the weighbridge from time to time!

    How much did this cost including the fitting?

    • @youngtourers2078
      @youngtourers2078  4 года назад

      Fitting is included in the price. For the full system your looking at somewhere very close to £3000 depending on the dealer and any options.
