The opportunity to live your dream lifestyle in as little as 6 months from now rather than the traditional strategy of working hard your entire life to maybe realise that dream at 65 is an idea that more and more people are beginning to consider.

Councils really are a big part of the housing challenge in Oz, greater flexibility on what you can live in on your land needs to happen.

It's not just the rules and regulations that protect the building industry, it's the cost of the regulations that do nothing for anybody. Generally these items are part of wise building but often they are requested for sites as a matter of course rather than as obviously needed.. Bal fire rating, insulation rating, soil tests, perculation test, slope assessment, environment assessment, koala assessment etc etc. Each needing qualified and expensive consultants. Funny thing is we built and lived in homes for over a century with none of thedse rules and those houses are still standing

Thanks so much for this! I’m in the process of sending out letters to land owners. Could you make a video interviewing land owners? It would be really useful to hear their perspective on why they decided to take up the opportunity (with you, and other tiny house owners)

I have set one up in my back yard and the most difficult and expensive part is trying to connect to sewage, water and electricity. I found that most plumbers won’t touch it unless council has approved the sewer connection which potentially opens up a whole new can of worms! They also chew lots of power, especially if you run an electric water heater, air conditioning, electric cooktop etc. I used a plumber ‘friend’ to hook up the sewage as he trusts us not to dob him in if council comes knocking.

Hi Adam, That is a great little video. I am interested in starting a community specifically for people with tiny houses on wheels THoW's. In the course of my investigations I have been examining the existing legislation in NSW relating to living in caravans/THoW's on private land. I have discovered that the legal situation in NSW is that a person can only live in a THoW's on private land if:
    1. the THoW's is attached to an existing house,
    2. It is being used as a bedroom space only, and
    3. the person in the tiny house is a member of the household to which the tiny house is attached.
There are two types of exemptions:
    1. There is an temporary exemption if the person living in the caravan/THoW's is an owner builder who is building their own house, but even then there are time limitations mentioned they being one year. They have to apply to council for a permit to do this though.
    2. A person can occupy a caravan/THoW's but not for more than two days at a time, and not for more than a total of 60 days in a twelve month period. There can only be a maximum of two caravans/THoW's on any one piece of land.
The only legal way to live in a THoW's where you are using it as an actual house is in a caravan park. If you live anywhere else you are at risk of being asked to move on by council as soon as a disgruntled neighbour or anyone else reports you to the local council authorities.
I have seen it said that the state legislation in NSW is echoed across Australia in other state and Territory jurisdictions. The conclusion I have come to is that I am going to need to apply for a caravan park planning permit to start the THoW's community I want to get going.
My advice to you is that you need to be cautioning people thinking of getting a THoW's about this legal issue. Many taking your advice are going to get a nasty shock when councils around Australia start hammering down on this and they find themselves with nowhere that they can legally live in their tiny house except in a caravan park.

Hi Bret, thanks so much for the comment. You raise a very valid point. It is a very valid concern for all tiny house owners and also those interested in building or buying one and it is why we are seeing a lot of great work being done around the country by the likes of Andrew, Lara & Greg from The Tiny House Company and also many others who are leading the way in making THOW more widely accepted.
It is worth noting that these rules that you mention in regards to what is allowed do vary from council to council and in some councils such as the Brisbane City Council for example, it is perfectly legal to reside in a caravan/tiny house on wheels. It would be great to see more people like yourself and many others address some of the issues with their local councils in an effort to introduce a better system for enabling tiny house living in a responsible and sustainable way so that everybody involved wins.
We are always totally transparent about letting people know that they are not legal in most situations and it is why I even created a RUclips video specifically about that.
Your THOW community sounds very interesting and I would love to learn more if and when you are ready to share some information about it. I'm sure many of our followers would love to hear about it to!
All the best Bret and thanks again for your comment.

The biggest concerns council's have with THOW's is the waist disposal. You can't just pump it onto the ground. If you install a compositing system or a septic system and do it through council, you will have less of an issue living off-grid. You need to work WITH council not avoid them. That's when they get the sh@#ts.

It’s ridiculous that you can’t buy land and live on it if you keep it clean. You can’t do it here in vic ..30 night limits apply. Unless you have a building permit then you can stay for 18 months.

I had been living in a 10 sqm hut on my land for about 8 years before the Shire found out about me. They did not mind that it was tiny but they did mind that it had no toilet, bathroom, laundry or certificate of occupancy. That is when I realized that the size of the house did not matter, and having checked that with the shire I embarked on my new 33 sqm tiny house, fully legal. They were just glad to have another ratepayer in a struggling shire.

Good luck in Canada. Like Australia housing is unaffordable and unattainable. Yet the idea of smaller homes and lots/ places to put them is just NOT ALLOWED. Find some place other than as a secondary home on a farm or cabin in woods on land you own( not practical for civilization mass housing solutions)

200 dollars a week, I'm guessing this is Australian dollars (I'm in Europe) really makes a tiny house not worth it. The equivalent of 250 a week would be the same as a mortgage for a medium sized apartment where I'm living (Belgium). So 200 a week seems a way overblown price for what's essentially just providing land and not much more.

Isn’t it ridiculous, all you have to do is return to your “certificate of birth” and give up your “birth certificate”, as your birth certificate is worth billions of dollars in Bonds. And being a natural born human and all land where ever you are born is yours and everybody’s to share. Unfortunately Maritime law has lifted everybody off the land and then made us pay fees, licenses, registrations and everything else because we have made ourselves the debtor staying without birth certificate.
