ABOUT CODEWITHCHRIS:
Hi I’m Chris! I’m dedicated to teaching fundamentals about how to make an app. This is important if you’re trying to land an iOS job, be a freelancer, increase or start a business with an app idea. On this channel and my website, you'll find a ton of free resources and tutorials to aid you on your journey to learn iOS development. Many people have learned to code and build apps on their own! cwc.to/reviews
About this video:
Every day, I get people asking me how to download Xcode on Windows or how to do iOS app development if they’re on a PC. In the past, I used to just send a list of PC alternatives for Xcode but in this video, I decided to dive deeper with a step by step tutorial on how to set up one of these Windows alternatives.
I’ll be honest, getting access to a physical Mac computer is going to be the best solution but if that’s just not possible for you, then the method I demonstrate in this video is probably the next best option.

Xcode for windows - step 1: "Get a mac"
There are many people who were able to use Xcode and create apps using Windows though.

Title: "Xcode for windows (2020)"
Date: Feb 1st 2019
Hello, this was released last year but it's still relevant in 2020 because it's featuring iOS 13. Just make sure to use Storyboard as User Interface and not SwiftUI when you create a new project in Xcode 11.
- Kat
Virtual machines and macstation is great for a start to get a feel of iOS development but a hackintosh or actual Mac is the way to go for long term
Agreed!
VM and MacStation are very diferents.
M Games yeah you still gotta have a compatible pc my old ass amd aint gonna run mac vm or hackintosh 🤷🏻♂️
I once tried hackintoshing but it didn’t detect the SSD
I've always had an interest in coding. I did things called "Commands" on the game Minecraft. I could customize the world to what I wanted, and how I wanted to to work. Since then, I've realized my passion is for coding, but I never knew how to make an app. Then I found you! I don't have an app idea yet, but I want to know how to make one. I was watching the other video of yours where you said XCode was for Mac PCs only. This broke my heart, but then you linked to a video about how to do it on Windows, which I have. Wish me luck on making an app that will help many!
Awesome! Glad you found us. Good luck on your iOS programming journey.
- Kat
@@CodeWithChris Thanks. But now I'm going to watch your iPhone app making video instead. It's long, but hopefully it's helpful for me!
Unfortunately Im a poor grad student who struggles with even basic necessities. This is a awesome solution, but outside my current pricepoint. I'll just have to keep designing and selling websites until I can work up enough funds for this.
You'll get there, GJ93! We are also trying to explore more ways on how we can make our paid programs more affordable. Hang in there and just keep on pushing! :-) -Arthur
There are ways do get Xcode for windows for free.
Just use a Virtual box by Oracle...It has mac versions built in...Not sure regarding the version though...
Anyone have a Mac book the don’t mind parting with? 😊
@@Nurdaylight how?
You say we don't need a "Mac: " then proceed to have the requirement of a "Mac: " to download XCode?
That's why there are these workarounds so you will be able to download Xcode even if you're using Windows PC. bit.ly/CWCWindows

CodeWithChris Okay, Thank You I’ll check it out!

Super appreciative of your support, Ryne! Thanks for learning with us! :-) -Arthur
also macincloud existed for ages, but it's just to publish your app, coding in a cloud is not a good idea, so you need a mac anyway, if you plan to do an ios app.
Yup, nothing better than the real Mac!

The lag made it completely unusable for me. Mojave running on VMWare actually ran batter than MacStadium. Not sure how on Earth people use a remote Mac that slow I would pull my hair out.
It could depend on the connection speed but yes VMWare is a good alternative.
-Kat
What video or tutorial did you use to install mojave on VM. i am seeing a lot issues?
Q? After i download xcode in MacStadium through Windows will I have to do this everytime I want to upload a video or create a new image page?
Hello, if you are using macStadium then it should have your mac "instance" intact until you cancel your plan with them. This means that all your files and programs already downloaded should still be there and ready to use anytime

Your tutorials are so far, the most informative that I have found so far.
I do still have some questions that I am confused on and cannot find the answers.

Hi sir, i am 10 years old boy and i want to create a app with a help of my father so can you say how much time will it take to create a app?
It depends on what sort of app you want to make, what its features are, and how long it takes for you to learn programming. There are a lot of factors!
- Kat
Is it recommended a macbook pro, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD, to develop apps? I've heard that the 2015 macbook pro is better than the last model, is this true?
All models are pretty good in my opinion. What happened is that the older models were more customizable (change the RAMs, change the HDD to an SSD, etc etc). With time Apple soldered all those into the motherboard and now, opening them is just useless.
Also people kinda followed that trend of "hating on the TouchBar". I like mine!
For programming, anything will work, but of course, the better the hardware, the faster it will work.
So visit an Apple Store and test them and see if you like one and them.
@AdrienVillez
Can somone help me
i am using 16gb ram, Ryzen 5 4600H, Nvidea 2060 with a SSD
will this virtual machine and Xcode app properly work?
Cause i really want to get into IOS development
Hi Yasi! You can post on our CodeCrew forum codecrew.codewithchris.com so that our tech support staff can help you out. - Pat
Hi Chris, Thank you for the video. 2 questions though.. 1. What kind of an internet speed do you have/ do you think is needed for a bearable experience and 2. Can i copy files from my PC to the MAC and vice versa.
Basically, I have an app that I made using Unity on my PC and am looking for a way to get it on to the app store. Thank you for any help in advance.
Hello, maybe check the Unity documentation if they have support for IOS/swift so you can integrate it in your app
you should have a good network (25-50 mbps minimum) and should be quite close to the server for less ping, try out the free trial to see if its bearable for you. if not then i suggest investing even just on a mac-mini (just make sure ram is at least 8gb, and ssd is your bestfriend for optimal speed)
- Francis
Great explanation, simple and clear. 👍
Thanks for the feedback! It means a lot!
Kat
I remember when I first started watching your videos in 2017 I had to run a virtual machine on my windows to xcode
I think it's a good idea at least until you know it's something you're going to stick with!
OK here is a curve ball for you: I have an old Macbook Pro from 2007 still running strong. It does literally everything I need EXCEPT run the latest version of Xcode. I did recently max upgrade my OS and install the older Xcode 7 (highest I can go) and I followed you through your older tutorial for the "War" card game app (THANKS for keeping those old videos on your channel - so helpful!!). What is my best strategy when I want to develop for latest Apple devices and upload to the Apple app store? Can my old Xcode 7 do this ok or do I for sure need to run Xcode 10? If I DO need to run Xcode 10 can I install a virtual “newer” mac OS emulator and run the latest Xcode that way? I do have a 64 bit machine with Intel Core 2 Duo and maxed out ram. It runs Xcode 7 no problem. Thanks!!
If you want to develop for the "latest and greatest", you'll need a machine that can handle the latest Xcode.
Still pretty amazing that you handle Xcode 7! Like going to war with a spoon and making a massacre!
@AdrienVillez
¿Can use Linux, Ubuntu?
You need a Mac computer to develop iOS apps. -Arthur
Hey Chris! so i have a really good idea for a dating app, but I know nothing about coding and im not the most tech savvy person. What would you suggest i do?
Hire someone or just try to take the leap and learn a little bit everyday.
Some of the biggest companies started like that!
@AdrienVillez
One additional good thing about chris’s video and setup is, you got to taste the beauty of swift language, and can compare it to other language.
Thank you for that!
Would having a windows and a Mac computer be best for flutter apps etc as a pipeline to deploy android/ios apps? Could I just use something like gitlab/selenium etc?
"Hello, if for flutter it would be ideal to have a mac minimum if you want to deploy for both ios and android, this is because you need a mac to deploy and compile using xcode, a mac can install android studio so it can create the android version by itself. whereas a windows machine cant install xcode so you wont be able to compile an ios app only android. Thus, having a mac will enable you to create an android and ios app
- Francis"
I bought a mac. Not going to let a computer stop me from success. Hackintosh may not be a consistent business decision at scale.
Is it possible to use your tutorials to create apps for both android and IPhone models?
Hi, we only teach iOS app development in our tutorials. Just search for Android Studio tutorials if you want to learn how to create Android apps.
- Kat
Hello, I’ve attempted to virtualise a macOS using virtualbox but it was too slow for my laptop. Is it worth me purchasing macstadium if my laptop can’t handle running virtualbox or will it just be unable to run too.
"Hello, the new versions of the mac are quite heavy specially on RAM.. like the new OS typically needs 8 GB of RAM to run properly,, so if you set a low value on your virtualization it will have a hard time.. if you have good internet then MacStadium might help so you can get a feel if xcode (apple) development is for you.
you can also head over to our community forum and post your specs and virtualization options maybe we can help you optimize it or something
- Francis"
I had no idea you could rent a remote Mac. Extremely informative, thanks!
Renting a Mac is a great way to test the Apple ecosystem but the best and easiest way to get your own Mac is to get a Mac Mini which goes for $700 but has some deals around the year to get it cheaper. You just need to get your own monitor and mouse and keyboard.
@AdrienVillez
Or just use a virtual machine with MacOS 🤯🤯🤯
your videos are great, big thumbs up to you.
but you say buying a mac up front which starts at $800. Why not say buy a secondhand mac for less than $800, which is quite feasible.
Of course you can buy a cheap secondhand Mac if you like.

Please Mr.Chris please can you teach us to develop apps for android as you do for ios.

The lag is so horrible for me, feels like I'm on a broken computer from the early 90's , it takes like two minutes after I click something for it to finally open it, and when I type text it's slightly faster but takes about 10 seconds to update too...it's so painful, is it supposed to be this bad?
Hello, it depends on your ping/latency to the server and how fast your connection is, it should only be in a few second delay for it to be ideal (1-3 second delay ideally) but if its 2 minutes then thats too much lag.
if you are just starting out and just want to feel swift developer by following the basic beginner course ruclips.net/p/PLMRqhzcHGw1b89DXHOVA77ozWXWmuBkWX then i suggest you use an online swift compiler instead online.swiftplayground.run/ (it will work the same way as playground on xcode)

Thanks, I'm making Netscape Navigator for iOS.

I have programming experience, I can follow these tutorials without major issues, but just watching this video as one of the very first few on your channel I have come to a stop already; different app templates; searched online - very little to none info about what I should choose at this point - I'd like my app to be dedicated to employees within my business only (not public) - so that they can use it to carry out daily work. It will include uploading of images using iPad and will be iPad dedicated only. Which template should I choose? If that helps, I need like a 'checksheet' / 'report' type app where certain aspects will be documented by taking photos using the actual device. What do you suggest please?
"Hello, if you check out our newer videos (or sign up for our free 14 day trial) it will be using the Xcode 12 version that only has 1 ""app"" template and will be using SwiftUI from now on, there will also be futher modules that have database and somewhat like a social media kind of site, check out our courses here learn.codewithchris.com
- Francis"
The long-term budget solution is to get a used Mac Mini (2010 and newer) add an SSD and boom, u're ready to kick ass with XCode and Swift👍
Be careful that 2010 might start to get old and you'll soon not be able to use the latest macOS version and also Xcode. You'll spend a very low amount of money right now but next year you'll have to do it again. Try target something from 2015.
@AdrienVillez
Same here! I couldn’t stand the lag of virtual machines at all. And I bought a Mac air 2018 for my capstone project.

CodeWithChris Yes!!😁 I am still learning your tutorials on basics😆! Great tutorials! Helped a lot!👍
Would you recommend getting a imac/mac mini or like a macbook?

I feel like there's so many great videos on this channel that I have no clue where to start...been watching the "swift for beginners" series, but don't know where to go after that. Any recommendations or tips? Maybe just go in order from when the videos got released?
True that it is easy to get lost. Too bad RUclips doesn't have a better way for us to organize videos aside from playlists.
To make beginners' journey a bit easier, we spread all the videos into a 28 Day path: bit.ly/iOS28Days

@@CodeWithChris Thank you very much!
Hi Chris, wonderful videos! Question: I use a PC laptop, but I have an iPad that is 5 to 6 years old. Do you suppose that iPad might be usable for installing and writing X Code for an App?
Xcode only works on Mac computers, it doesn't work on iPad (yet). But you can practice Swift on iPad by using the Swift playground: www.apple.com/swift/playgrounds/
And here are other solutions for Windows users bit.ly/CWCWindows
- Kat
What's your take on Flutter vs. Natives?
If you don't want to learn both languages for iOS and Android, it's up to you to use Flutter. It is a great alternative to cut development times and make it easier to maintain a program especially as a new/small developer because it only uses one code base for both IOS and Android. But it won't give you the same level of control as native apps like Kotlin/Android Studio for Android or Xcode for iOS so there will be disadvantages.
Kat
CodeWithChris thanks
The coupon didn't generate savings for me. It was still $79.00. I'm going to keep the subscription while I take the courses. I am an instructional designer creating apps for corporate learning.

Hey love your videos! Maybe this a dumb question but.... You mentioned virtually using another Mac laptop or desktop, what about an ipad? Could I use xCode on my ipad? or Virtually connect with it since typing on an actual keyboard is so much more natural? Thoughts?
Xcode doesn't work on iPad. But you can practice coding in Swift on your iPad using Swift playground www.apple.com/swift/playgrounds/
-Kat
Hello Chris, I have a Mac but it is an old version and I can't install Xcode. Is there a way to install it on old Mac computers? I have a Macbook Air year 2014.
There is a chance your Mac doesn't support the latest macOS version and so, not the latest Xcode version indeed. If you google "how to download older version of Xcode", you can find link to older versions. You might need an Apple ID Developer account to access some pages.
Now using older Xcode version won't be using the newest Swift programming language.
A Mac can definitely be used for a good 10 years, but when it comes to programming or working with heavier stuff, you might have to look to get yourself a new birthday present or early Xmas present! The new Mac Mini is at $599, if you have a spare screen and mouse and keyboard. The cheapest in the line!
Good luck!
@AdrienVillez
Hey Chris I'm not sure how often you check you comments but I'm interested in creating and app for apple store and android. Can I do this on a mac computer?
Yes, but you'll have to make 2 separate apps. There are available cross-platform alternatives (if you don't want to learn both languages for iOS and Android) like Google Flutter, it's written in Dart. But it won't give you the same level of control as native apps like Kotlin/Android Studio for Android or Xcode for iOS so there will be disadvantages.
-Kat

I'm not familiar enough with Windows unfortunately but Googling "how to run macOS on Windows" gives a lot of new and interesting results. Here is one: www.makeuseof.com/tag/macos-windows-10-virtual-machine/
If you are really interested in iOS, the best would be to get a Mac (the new Mac Mini is at around $599 - the cheapest option). Now, since you already have a recent PC and if you are curious about Android, you could also just get started with Android Studio or even learn web.

Hey Chris, I've been watching your lessons these days and I did some research about creating apps and found out that it takes minimally 75k to create the apps I wanted. Does it mean I can save that money by watching Your video here?
Yes, you can save money by learning Swift and actually create the apps yourself. But learning Swift is a skill and it's like learning a new language, it takes time and dedication especially if you're planning to create advanced apps. If it's not worth all your time, then it might be wiser to hire a developer to do it for you instead. Watch this ruclips.net/video/gnyXbea2jyA/видео.html

Hi Chris, can I develop an app iOS app using Apple iMac 21.5" Desktop Intel Core i5 2.50GHz 4GB RAM 500GB HDD MC309LL/A (A)?
Some older iMac are super easy to open in the back panel and replace the RAMs, maybe there is a chance to level that up to 8 or even 16GB! (iFitIt has a nice website to help with that and RAMs are cheap online)
How old is the computer model tho? I would recommend 2015, nothing older has in the future, updates in the OS will get rare.

Pls can you hlep me I have installed Mojave10.14 on my dell laptop but ican’t find the wifi 🥺🥺
Hello, so you have a hackintosh?, i would suggest looking for .dmg (installer for mac) of your drivers (gpu, processor, wifi, usb, etc) and install them manually
- Francis
CodeWithChris OK Thanks I would try to do it 😍😍
Im having an issue when inputting the IP address into TightVNC. "No security types supported. Server sent security types, but we do not support any of them."
For any issues with TightVNC or MacStadium, I would recommend contacting the customer service of the app you are using as we have no access to any of that.
-Kat
hey Mike, I'm having the same error. Did you resolve?
I’m having same issue. I contacted macstadium and they advised me to download VNC viewer.
@@dferg9320 same issue here. VNC viewer works for me.
Is there a way to test your Xcode project on a Physical device using MAC Stadium? Or are you restricted to using the simulator to test apps?
I’m building a game in Unity but would like to test it on iOS for as cheap as possible.
Great video!
-Jacob
I actually do not know that, and do not think it's possible.
Unless Mac Stadium has a way to link a USB from their Mac to your USB at home...
I would read their Q&A or contact them directly. The other option would be to export the project and bring it to a friend or family member with a Mac.
@AdrienVillez
I'm two years late but you could deploy your app to a CI and then generate a build from there
What type of Mac do you recommend? Will the xcode work on the older version Mac?
Chris has a 2015 iMac, I use a 2017 Macbook Pro. Anything from 2015 or newer will do fine. It's too late to go for the 2012 machines as they will soon not get updated.
After that, the better specs the better.
@AdrienVillez
hello Chris i want to create an app for ordering and uploading pictures to be printed in a lab
Awesome, Romeo! Start here: codewithchris.com/start -Arthur
but one one have mac around me is there any other way
Hello, you really need a Mac to build iOS apps. -Arthur
I have an ipa file of my app a developer created for me. I'm trying to upload to my Apple developer account but I understand I need to do that through a Mac. Can I use MacStadium to do that? I don't have a Mac and am hoping this is a solution.
"Hello, yes it should be fine but you will need to access the IPA file through cloud or something so you can ""share"" it to the MacStadium machine
but yes it should work no problem
- Francis"
@@CodeWithChris thank you
@@CodeWithChris Thanks, Chris. I have another question. Do you have a video, or can you make one on how to convert a React Native file to ipa? I had a coder create an app for me and didn't realize the process of uploading to the App store. It needs to be converted to ipa. Is that something I can do as well through MacStadium before I upload to App Store? Thanks
This is interesting, I had never stumbled upon this sort of solution (I’ve seen ads for renting actual Macs)… but the performance is really bad. It’s slower than remote controlling the iMac I had access at my last job!
Thank you so much! Glad to know that this tutorial has helped you. :-) -Arthur
Can I run my app on a physical ios device from a mac thats in a cloud?
Hello, i don't think thats possible unless you put your app in testflight
- Francis
So how do you get the app onto your phone? building an ipa file and using cydia impactor?
Here: codewithchris.com/deploy-your-app-on-an-iphone/
- Kat
CodeWithChris That article doesn’t go over deploying the app if your mac is nowhere near you, like shown in the video
thank you very much i got there and it's going very well thank you again for your help thanks👏👏👏👍👍👍👌👌👌
That's good to hear. Thanks for learning with us! :)

When you rent the remote access to Mac, can you still publish an apple app
Xcode is linked to Apple and the App Store. To publish an app, you need an Apple ID, so it can be done from anywhere.
@AdrienVillez
Thanks for your video. It is awesome. Can you recomend me the minimum model of Mac computer that i need to programming with Mac and xcode. Thanks
I would say anything from 2015 or newer. You can really find a good mac mini or iMac for cheap(er) on eBay. Now of course, the better the longer it will last and also the faster it will run.
As someone who own both Windows and Mac, I can say that even if the initial cost is higher with a Mac, you'll keep it way longer than a Windows pc (and let's not start comparing security, privacy and all the free software that comes with it!)
@AdrienVillez
CodeWithChris you get a 2012 Mac mini with 4gb i5 cpu from eBay for like $250. I got one and works great after the free upgrade from apple to mojave osx 10.14 upgrade.
@@JIMMYPOP7505 Thank you very much for your answer but do you think a newer Mac book air works great to create apps?
Thanks for making great content.
I like the way you explain everything.. I will try this. My question is...
1. is it working smoothly? Any lagging?
2. How fast Internet speed is needed. I have 2-3Mbps connection. Is it fine during running xcode.
3. Can I do this with linux OS?
I hope you will reply.
Hello Rohit, I recommend reaching out to MacStadium to get the best answers for your questions. You can try this with Linux OS.

@@CodeWithChris thanks
thank you for your videos! I'm getting stuck trying to publish my app because I don't have any "devices" registered in xcode. I can't plug an iphone into a virtual system. Any tips there? Thanks in advance!
Hello, there should be extension packs available for your emulator to detect your connected devices. check this stackoverflow answer as it might help you stackoverflow.com/a/58005032

Hi, awesome video Chris. I signed up with MacStadium and installed TightVNC, but for some reason when i try to connect to the server I get the following error: "Error in TightVNC Server: No security types supported. Server sent security types, but we do not support any of them." I am running the latest version of TightVNC available for download on their website. Do you know what's going on or if there are any good alternatives to TightVNC?
Hello, we recommend reaching out to TightVNC's customer support. The other alternatives are listed here bit.ly/CWCWindows

Having the same issue and haven’t heard back from TightVNC. Did you get this fixed? If so, how?
hi, i want to redirect webapplication after click iOS app. and show at iOS app. how to do it?
Hello, do you mean you want your app to show a website? check out this article it may help you codewithchris.com/make-an-app-from-website/

I have the umph on my desktop to run hackintosh. Would this method still work?
You can try along with the other solutions here bit.ly/CWCWindows
- Kat
does it work with all apple computers?
Xcode is especially made for Mac computers apps.apple.com/us/app/xcode/id497799835?mt=12
- Kat
This is really painful to start with, any tips on making this how I can improve the viewer?
Hello, you can try using a different viewer like Splashtop and ultraVNC but it all depends on what is supported and how fast your internet is, best option is still getting or renting a physical mac

@@CodeWithChris Chris, I broke down and bought a mac and now I feel like my decent into hell is complete, I have tried every suggestion and I can't get an react native app with an error out of the simulator. I can't find the directories that most of the forums refer to to do a complete cleanup. I clicked simulator menu, found home, deleted app, then I deleted the directory, created a new basic app with a different name which should be default RN app. Lo and behold it's still running the same code that was failing before even though it should not exists now.
According to home brew I am running macOs 10.15.1, Xcode 11.3.1, CLT:11.3.1, I know you don't talk RN but hoping you point me to where the simulator files might be.
I am ok now, sorry to bother, it turns out that it's the metro bundler that I have to clear and reset as needed, i used "react-native start --reset-cache" in separate terminal
Could you try it on Ipad?
Xcode only works on Mac computers, it doesn't work on iPad. But you can practice Swift on iPad by using the Swift playground: www.apple.com/swift/playgrounds/

I use windows 10 n I try use cydia impactor but it says update Xcode to 7.3 r later, how can I do that????
We are not familiar with Cydia, please use Google to search this topic.

i have the perfect idea for a app - i just need to realise it without anybody stealing my idea... is there a way to convert windows programms to ios apps?
Hello, i think it would be better to "remake" the program into ios yourself to avoid issues with bugs
if you are new to programming in ios i suggest take the beginners tutorial first found here
ruclips.net/video/ySa58y1SRy0/видео.html
if you are not quite new and you want to get practicing on your first app you can follow this tutorial

Xcode is created by Apple to make apps for Apple devices. Luckily, there are some workarounds you can try to make Xcode work on Windows. Check them out here bit.ly/CWCWindows
