Minari also won my heart, I just wanted to hug my grandma when it ended. 💕 Also, really looking forward to your video on the boys, full of spoilers hopefully haha
The Boys season 1 is probably one of the best first seasons to a show I have ever seen. Gotta love Karl "I'm a badass in everything I'm in" Urban. Also American Accent Simon Pegg was pretty sweet.
I'm really enjoying it so far, though Simon Pegg's accent is throwing me off (not because there's something wrong with it, but just because I'm not used to him sounding this way)
Agreed. Oh except maybe in Ready Player One. I don't like to count it because that movie sucked. Also I'm well into The Blade Itself for a third time. Thanks again! 😜
Nice! :D Adding 'The Call' (had honestly not heard of it!), 'Come True', 'Boss Level', and 'Crip Camp' to the watchlist. Movies we've seen: -'The Father' (basically needed an entire box of tissues, wow. Like you, rooting for this and 'Minari' in several categories) -'Barry Lyndon' by Stanley Kubrick (was surprisingly warmer than other films of his that we've seen) -'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' (REALLY loved this. Like, a lot.) -And the scariest thing I saw was a short, several-minute film by David Lynch from when he was an art student called "The Alphabet" that just .... *shudder* It's honestly one of the scariest things I've ever seen, and it felt like what the video within 'The Ring' might actually be like (don't worry, though, I'm clearly alive! :P ). I'm not even sure I recommend it lol :P Oh wow... Anyway, awesome, awesome video, as always, and thanks for all of these discussions -- lots to now see! ))
Come True is one of the most enraging movies I ever watched. It starts so strong and for the first half you think: this movie is AMAZING. And then it just gets weird and doesn't make any sense. Awesome promises and zero payoff. I was fuming when I left the cinema. I mostly agree with your assessment but I'd give it a 1/10 just out of spite because it angered me so much! :D
Ive seen the 11.22.63 series and really enjoyed it. I have the book but havent read it yet it is a very big book i will read it eventually. I just saw The Father thought it was a great movie, glad you liked it
I’m with you on that! I like to think The Matrix is a stand alone movie, although I tolerate the others. Nostalgia watching is great, Iv Close encounters, Jaws and Day of the Triffids planned this month. :)
Been having lots of good luck with first time watches in 2021 and March was no exception my 4 absolute favorites from this month were Burn Burn Burn a nice little indie dramedy, Saint Maud which was phenomenal, Zack Snyder’s Justice League which for a movie with 4 years of hype behind it satisfied me and was everything I could want from a movie featuring those iconic characters, and finally Amélie which I was dying to watch for a while now and I finally got to and that movie was just plain sweet, funny, and wonderful.
100% with you on Come True. After I watched it I posted on Twitter "I've just told the end of a film to f*ck off!!!" I was not happy! Great video as always.
Ted Lasso is also heartwarming. Just found series The Hour (2011) on Tubi and really enjoying it. Loved My Octopus Teacher. The Call sounds interesting. Borat, not for me either! Thanks!
Somehow I didn't end up watching any movies last month, but I've been rewatching The OA, currently halfway through season 2. What an amazing, genuinely unique show -- I'm angry and sad at the cancellation all over again. I suppose if Twin Peaks can come back some 30 years later, I'll just tell myself there's hope for this as well.
How is season 2? I really enjoyed the first season, but for some reason never came back to watch the second, and now that I know it will remain unfinished I'm even less motivated because I don't want it to just leave me hanging.
@@ImpressionBlend Personally I love season 2. It's very different to the point that it almost feels like a different genre of show than season 1, but still has the same elegant ethereal atmosphere. It still feels fresh and original and although it amps up the weirdness a lot, it never feels random. It ends in a similar half-cliffhanger sort of way to season 1, but in retrospect it sort of works as an actual ending as well. I'd probably still recommend it even though it's unfinished, but I can see how some people could be more frustrated with the ending than I was.
Another excellent video 😁 I was just about to purchase “The Call”, not realising I was going to purchase the wrong movie. And not realising it’s on Netflix. Now hyped to watch it on Netflix. Love a good sci fi time travel movie. My favourite recent time travel movie I watched was Predestination, also recommended by you. And I was so blown away. I recommended it to all my friends.

I’ll admit Borat makes me laugh. I love Cohen as a modern day Andy Kaufman (I put Nathan Fielder in this category as well). Totally understand why someone wouldn’t care for it. I’m just curious what type of humor you’re into. Any comedy recommendations? Great video as always!
I mean, it's hard to recommend comedies because I don't know what you've seen, but if we're talking semi recent stuff - some of my favorites are: "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", "The Cabin in the Woods", "The Nice Guys", "In Bruges", "Shaun of the Dead"... I generally prefer when it's comedy blended with something else, and if it's dark humor - even better.
I too watched and suffered through BOTH Borat movies for the first and last time in my life in March, due to pressure from just... everyone. I get what Sacha was going for, but yeah, no, not my kind of thing. And they also shat on my country and culture, which I do not appreciate at all. I got to see Come True and Lucky as well, and I have similar opinions. But, I also got to watch some good and great ones, like The World to Come, The Father (yes, I cried a lot), Zach Snyder's Justice League (which yes, it is THAT good), My Octopus Teacher and two gems: The Empty Man and The Vigil. I am currently interested in watching the documentary A Secret Love. I also strongly recommend you watch System Crasher, it's heartbreaking and wonderful and just hopeless all around. The lead is played by the fantastic Helena Zengel, who you might know from News of the World. I am excited about the reading wrap-up!
I'm just so over Eastern European stereotypes in films in general, among other things, but also the whole "look at stupid people" over the top humor is so not for me. I get the whole angle of "exposing" things and opinions, and that others admire how Sacha gets these ridiculous responses out of people.... but no, thanks. "The World to Come" was beautiful, wasn't it? Definitely was one of the highlights of Sundance for me, as I mentioned in another video. I'm kind of sad it's getting zero attention at the moment - I've seen absolutely zero reviews of that film, even though it's available on VoD. I NEED to watch "The Empty Man", "The Vigil", and "System Crasher"! Thank you for the recommendations!
Just started Invincible, an animated superhero series on Amazon Prime. At first I thought it was just going to be another cynical superhero story like The Boys, and most of the first episode is a very standard Spiderman-esque origin story, but then... well it gets fucking nuts. That's all I'll say.
Minari... I couldn't help but to notice your voice breaking a little bit talking about it... Or was it just my impression?. I would love to see it, I just don't know where to stream it. The Father I would see that movie alone cause I know i will cry my eyes out, i can relate to that topic in a personal level. Nomadland I also need to see that one, I just don't know where to stream it.
So glad that you watched The father. It has become one of my favorite movies of all time. What really surprised me is that you liked The call. I really found the premise really intriguing and promising but the final result was just a mess. For me, it was very silly, laughable, stupid and unpredictable in the worst way. Also, It had way too much plot-holes and some of the characters were very cartoonish. The first 20 minutes were interesting but after that I kept laughing throughout the whole movie. I was really surprised that it had a high rating and I thought that everyone will think as I did but I was dead wrong. Really happy that you enjoyed though. (btw Dark is my favorite show so I really like time-travel movies but not this one).
The film is a LOT more vague than the book, and reading the book actually made me appreciate the film more (because it cleared some things up). But I would also definitely pick the original novel over the adaptation, I've been considering re-reading recently.
@@ImpressionBlend I reread it a couple of months ago and had forgotten how great it was, plus how different it was from The Crimson Petal and the White. Hard to believe it's the same author! I felt like the movie was lacking in the overall tone and texture of the book.
Boss Level had such a great character growth for the main character, the actors clearly had such a great time making it and it was a lot of fun. It had one flaw, not enough Naomi Watts.
Crip Camp really surprised me. As someone who was really bummed Welcome to Chechnya got left out, Crip Camp definitely deserved it and I hope it wins the Oscar :)
I have seen mixed reviews about "The Call" and I was on the fence, but if you are saying it is good, then I am gong to watch it . Probably today. Sometimes I am happy that I am not a movie critic so I don't have to watch stuff like Borat :). Not my kind of humour at all. EDIT: I watched The Call. That was intense. Thoroughly enjoyed! and I thought the actress Park Shin-Hye was great!.
Anthony Hopkins Must Win Best Actor. If Chadwick wins it is solely based on the fact that he Died and it's the last chance to honour him. If they Vote based on merit Anthony must Win. He gave the best performance since Casey Affleck in "Manchester by the sea".
As always, another amazing video. Yes yes yes! Florian Zeller really deserved the nomination for director, and I am rooting for Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor wins. “The Father” and “Minari” are easily my favorites of the Oscar Season. Like yourself, I really disliked “Borat 2”. I think it is obvious the nominations are more of a political statement than a merit of the actual film statement.
I mean, that's always played a part though - they always nominate quite a few films they consider "relevant" in some way. Though it seems a lot more obvious these past few years. I'm still sad "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" got nominated for absolutely nothing :(
@@monkeyangelo717 Maybe is not a very good movie , but Maria Bakalova deserve a oscar nominations , she is a completely different person in real life, from the character that she played in the movie...
Awwww how could you not love Borat? I'm from the UK. It's that British taking the Piss out of Americans type humour. So I guess it's not going to go over well with American natives.
Borat is not my type of comedy. I'll watch call! Why did Borat get nominated? IDK! Couldn't finish Sound of Metal, it was too real for me. I'm currently finnishing the crown and watching the falcon and the winter soldier on Disney+. I'll try finishing the sound of metal.
Borat movie is about a barbaric man who wants to sell his daughter to Donald Trump to improve his country's reputation.. what the hell were the voters thinking about when they decide to vote for this story as one of the best screenplays of the year!!!
I don't love the movie, but I will say that Maria Bakalova's performance is absolutely incredible. She's the heart and soul of the movie, and her character actually brings out some incredibly nice qualities in some of the worst people, and given how "us vs. them" America is, it's actually pretty moving to see people we'd probably label is "horrible" doing something genuinely good and going out of their way to protect someone in danger.
Minari ... don’t you think the film ended abruptly? For movie of this genre, I prefer Brooklyn. For me, being understated doesn’t mean it is nuanced... but again, I agree to disagree. To me, if Yeun could be nominated, then Song Kong-Ho should be nominated at least twice in the best actor category, at least for “A taxi driver” and last year’s phenomenal “The Parasite”......
Oh, Song Kong-Ho was absolutely snubbed for "Parasite" - I'm really surprised he wasn't nominated. Also, "Brooklyn" is one of my most rewatched films, I love it ))
Well, it's too late for that, I'm halfway through season 1, but maybe I'll do individual reviews of both seasons? I'm not sure yet, we'll see how I feel at the end of season 1
I might check lucky out. So called heavy handed message movies don't trigger me. In fact I welcome an artists point of view, even if it's a message I don't agree with. The Dark Knights heavy handed conservatism is an example of a film I enjoyed even though I'm a progressive.
i'm currently rewatching all of the handmaid's tale in anticipation of the new season and i watched i care a lot which i enjoyed so i don't get all the negative reviews for it. i also finished the one on netflix and boy what a waste of time do not recommend such poor execution.
When you were talking about Come True’s third act, don’t you hate that!? I’d rather a film just be bad so I can stop watching, than to get my hopes up and dash them at the end. Some films peter out at the end and that’s disappointing too, but far worse (IMO) is the Unnecessary Twist™. Ever since the concept of the twist was invented, it’s been used to great effect...AND, just as often, it has derailed good films because the writer(s) couldn’t close the deal and got lazy. It can make you feel like you wasted your time completely, like listening to a long joke with a terrible punchline. Тьфу! Glad you finally watched Minari. It feels like that film came out SO long ago because of the time vortex that was 2020. For some reason I thought you’d reviewed it already - my mistake. I knew you’d like it though! A24 can do no wrong )) Right, I’ve got a few things to watch thanks to your video. Your taste in horror is my taste in horror so I’m definitely going to start with The Call...
There are definitely some A24 films that are.... less than great, shall we say? But there are WAY more that range from good to great, and "Minari" is definitely one of the great ones. Let me know how you feel about "The Call"! I hope you enjoy it! I forgot to mention, there is a mid-credits scene which seems to be polarizing, so I'm curious what you'll think.
I thought “The Call” was a solid movie for the majority of its runtime. The mid-credits scene though made absolutely no sense and it unfortunately ruined the movie for me.
I just watched Minari today and completely agree with you about the actress who played the grandmother. She was fabulous!
I watched Minari and I never feel so moved by a movie in quite a while, great video Marianna.

I have no plans to watch Borat, but I have to believe it must have some kind of underlying woke message if it’s actually nominated for awards.
Когда-нибудь я доберусь до корейских триллеров! Просто перестану ждать мужа и посмотрю сама😄
Вот вот! Давай )) Муж потом надумает
I think Anthony Hopkins might be my grandfather
The Boys are fine, no way close to the brilliance of Doom Patrol.
Minari ... don’t you think the film ended abruptly? For movie of this genre, I prefer Brooklyn. For me, being understated doesn’t mean it is nuanced... but again, I agree to disagree. To me, if Yeun could be nominated, then Song Kong-Ho should be nominated at least twice in the best actor category, at least for “A taxi driver” and last year’s phenomenal “The Parasite”......
Oh, Song Kong-Ho was absolutely snubbed for "Parasite" - I'm really surprised he wasn't nominated. Also, "Brooklyn" is one of my most rewatched films, I love it ))
@@ImpressionBlend I love everything about that movie, especially the soundtrack.
I would watch anything you create to be honest but how about a Marianna reacts to The Boys?? Since we no longer have Newcomplex channel...😭
Well, it's too late for that, I'm halfway through season 1, but maybe I'll do individual reviews of both seasons? I'm not sure yet, we'll see how I feel at the end of season 1
@@ImpressionBlend ok, anyways i will watch anything you create 😂
@@ImpressionBlend have you seen "Tales from the Loop"? I am kinda think you will like it.
I might check lucky out. So called heavy handed message movies don't trigger me. In fact I welcome an artists point of view, even if it's a message I don't agree with. The Dark Knights heavy handed conservatism is an example of a film I enjoyed even though I'm a progressive.
Wah, this is a long one.
Well watched the Call great till the cop out ending. No final girls there.
i'm currently rewatching all of the handmaid's tale in anticipation of the new season and i watched i care a lot which i enjoyed so i don't get all the negative reviews for it. i also finished the one on netflix and boy what a waste of time do not recommend such poor execution.
A24 can do no wrong ))
Right, I’ve got a few things to watch thanks to your video.
Yea so... I'm going to pretend that scene doesn't exist because that was nonsense.
Once again, I am the first. Haha.
Niceeee haha
Hi, did you ever watch Dead Snow (Död Snö)? It's a Norweigan Zomie movie. Kind of in the same vein as the Evil Dead movies.
I did! It was fun!
