Looked high and low for a foot locker style trunk to store my daughter's dress up clothes. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxRkkpE1_3gMEZ2mPhAt6b2moNCUXyH8tG I had one growing up that I stored my Barbies in and wanted something sturdy like that for her costumes. This arrived really, really quickly and is exactly what I've been looking for. Perfect size, color (pink) and has stood up for nearly a year so far against my kids using it as a chair, stage, and barricade (😬) to keep each other out of their rooms. I'm probably going to order another one for my daughter's Barbies.
HA, HA! I LOVE THIS! My wife has often complained about how much outdoor, camping, bushcraft, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking kit I have. Then I showed her this video. What I own would fit in a quarter of your kit room. You've made me look positively spartan! Cheers.
I've found Christmas tree bags to be pretty good to hold those large tents. Basically a ton of room where you don't have to roll perfectly, and has handles.
Thank you Simon, this has helped my marriage: I watched this with my wife, who made the comment ‘God, he’s got a lot of crap hasn’t he?’ - to which I was able to reply, ‘You see? You see how lucky you are?’ 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Simon, us mere mortals can only dream of such a man cave, and some great tips! (Give my best wishes to Mrs In the Woods btw!)
Thanks for this Simon. I’ve told my partner that I need more kit and now I have video evidence that I do need more. Great video as usual. All the best. Keep them coming.
Simon, love the videos. For the mouse problems, you can try a few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball. Mice hate the smell of peppermint, it might keep them out of your kit. Just leave a few of those peppermint cotton balls around your building. It should help with the mice, but might make your equipment a little aromatic.
Just watched you first video from Jan 2017. You and Mags look just a little younger back then. 5 years now I've been enjoying going to the woods with you and Mags. Such a wonderful journey. Again, thanks for bringing us along and rub Mags eyes for us all.

A man having a gear room is a fundamental human right. Yours is similar to mine. But a bit bigger, and more organised, and you have electricity, and more stuff.
One of those net jungle hammocks works well for storage of sleeping padsand or sleeping bags. Its a nice way to get things up and out of the way without shelves. You can dry things on them as well. Great video, thx for sharing.
I’ve been to bushcraft shops with less kit than this. They were also nowhere near as tidy or well organised! Great collection Simon, thanks for sharing.
Simon, such a great video. Sharing your system and how you use it, is the sort of information that I have rarely seen shared. You also prove that being organised is the way to be. Thanks.
Envy level is off the scale here! I've got my stuff strung between my apartment, an RV (caravan to you), and one large self-storage unit and one smaller one. Trying to get it all consolidated into two spaces so that all my backpacking stuff is in my apartment, right to hand, and all the camping stuff will be either in the back of my truck, or in a mid-sized storage unit. Thanks for giving us a tour Simon!
Happy to discover that I'm not the only one to have a bag of bags! I mentioned in an Instagram comment that I had kit everywhere: I forgot to say I keep fuel (meths, propane/butane, bio-ethanol, etc) in a separate metal shed. Sometimes there's a 5l jerry-can of unleaded in there too. And a tin of time expired marine pyrotechnics that I can't find a legitimate way to get rid of. No smoking near the shed please! 😄
My husband who is NOT a camper has always questioned me as to why I need different bits of camping equipment. He just doesn't get it. I loved seeing all your kit as I definitely know that I am not the only camper who has more than one tent, more than one cooking system etc. etc. I love your setup, I do have a cupboard I keep the smaller stuff in but also have some space in hubby's shed. Thanks for showing us how you do it. 😀
Why do I have a suspicion there may be some outdoor types experiencing symptoms of jealousy right about now? Thank you Simon for the tour and motivation to upgrade our storage procedure.
I'm not sure what's more exciting - seeing this or seeing someone's sewing set up. Both equally exciting actually!! I loved this video!!! Your stuff is so well organized! And I thought I did a good job last weekend with my new Wham boxes and my sewing threads......The intro music made me laugh - here he is, opening the door, and - WOW! Impressive! And a new sewing machine - a bit different to the Jones you used for your baker tent!
I have had mouse problems in my attic in the house. I like the barrel storage idea. I like your way of thinking on the shelf and boxes too. Thanks for the video.
Enjoyed watching, Simon. The closer I get to retirement, the more gear I'm accumulating in readiness for some wild camping, so this video was really well-timed. At the moment, the gear is strewn all over the place in 2 bedrooms, much to my wife's annoyance! Have to say, your shed is a lot better stocked that some of the shops I've been into.
I like the way you drag stuff in and out, drop your boxes on the ground and stuff things inside your containers. These are skills I must develop if I am to become a real bush-crafter!
I'm grateful for your going through all this kit over the years, as it's helped me find my essential kit list, without having to aquire as much. What first attracted me to your channel years ago were your videos where you packed everything you needed in a single German rucksack or hip pack. I have one of my own now and can set it up for a day hike kitchen and meal, water for 4, tarp, seat, etc. And with quick tuning can adjust it for a smaller trip, or hammock overnight. But to zero in on the essential kit, I've had to aquire a little more to find exactly the kit I like the best, but nowhere near as much as would have been needed without your videos.
Simon, there’s an easy solution to the mice problem. They make a lid trap that fits on any 5 gallon bucket. You simply put some peanut butter on the lid and mice walk up the ramp and walk out on the lid to eat the bait and they fall into the bucket alive. You can deal with them however you want after that.
😂😂😂😂 found this video a little late, but still right in time!! As we are going to have a 5000kwh Solar installed to our roof, my wife has been to our attic may be the first time in years…. Cool stuff. Mice they are my least favorite mammal. Try putting dryer sheets spread around in your cubby holes and between any loose fabric canvas and so on. I have been using them now for 8 years and have not had any issues. A bonus they keep that musty smell away. Try it you will like it!

An organized work/equipment shed means an organized mind. I’m not surprised. Terrific ideas and much appreciated. Mouse traps work too. Just moved from Texas to Kentucky.
A good bit of advice is if you are going to store something put some silica gel cat litter with what you are storing because it’s so hydroscopic all moisture is absorbed within minutes, they sell little packets that do the same thing, but it’s silica gel in them and the cat litter is far cheaper….I use to have a caravan and would pour a pack of it all over it before locking it up for the winter(and I can a sure the winters in Scotland are very wet lol)
Appreciate the video as I was setting up a gear area today. Timing is everything. Had to abandon using various closets as I was losing track of gear. Knowing you have a piece of kit is annoying if you can’t find it easily. Thanks
I have all my kid in a shipping container and I think I should build a gear room in the garden but having a rented property is a high risk for building a shed of this scale 😂. Being a builder it’ll never be built like a shed. More like a house in my garden 🫣. The scariest part is letting my partner see how much kit I have. Yes I’m on par with your kit list.
Regarding the Plano boxes, use backer rod (for filling large gaps before caulking) in the groove of the lid, and it will seal the lid making it water proof when latched closed.
Hi simon, 10-May-2022: Congratulations to your 150k landmark! Celebrate it and you have earned it! I enjoy every single moment with your stories out in the woods! Cheers from CH, Steve
At one time I liver in a house where I had to store most of my gear in my bedroom, I had strung clothesline across the room and after a camp would hang my tent and sleeping bags uo on lines with a couple of fans running to stir the air. A buddy of mine has a closet in his basement that he stores his gear in and has a couple of small fans to move air.
Nice storage i use my garage not heated but everything is in really useful boxes on storage racks. In the process of clearing out not wanted stuff 16 foot canoe arrived so we have that on straps hung from the roof rafters at an angle (garage not quite long enough) looking to install a pulley system so i can hoist up on my own got a few ideas from your video like the para cord drying lines and yes those little mice can cause alot of damage so my aim is to have everything in boxes organised in a similar way to your system but well done. I have just bought my canoe and getting everything ready for my great glen trail canoe adventure in August raising money for Alzheimers Society early days Ant , Richard and Simon are helping me with advice and encouragement. I am in the process of trying to get a team together for the trip. My colleagues who last decemeber wanted so much to do it have pulled out due to holiday commitment etc as you need at least a week to do the trip. Still buying equipment for canoe so your ideals on storage are welcome just need the weekend to arrive to tackle phase 2 of the garage organising and get rid of all the items we no longer use 😊
That is a lot of stuff! Mine is similar but a much smaller scale. I tend to sell off gear I no longer use as I upgrade because I know I'm not going to use it again although always keep a spare of most things so can take family members out with spare gear etc.
Great video. A hoarder's dream! Everything so organized. 😳 BTW, might try sealing the outside bottom of the building, then in an out of the way corner of the floor, drill a 1inch hole and pour in a 1/4 to 1/2 box of moth balls, depending on how much space there is. The gas released from decay of the moth balls displaces oxygen under the floor. Nothing can live there. No mice, spiders, roaches, snakes. Nothing! Doesn't kill them necessarily, they just can't breath, so they leave. For you, just venting when the smell gets a bit much. Just don't over do it with the balls. Can always add more. DON'T forget to plug the hole well. Have used it in camper storage for years. A half dozen scattered on the floor does it. Think it's ethylene gas, from the oxygen breaking it down. Good luck, and keep the videos coming. Love the variety.
Awesome gear storage room. I have a closet for most of my gear and the backpacks and my paddling PFDs are hung in the basement. I'm glad you really stressed the importance of making sure all your gear is dry before being stored. It is so easy to destroy gear with some dampness in it.......Take care, Bluefin.
Just picked up a few Plano brand storage bins like yours (as well as some larger versions). Sorry they are pricey in the UK as they are dirt cheap here in the US ($15 for the small, $20 for the medium and about $30-35 for the large) in any event if you search “water/weatherproofing Plano sportsman’s trunks” there are several good videos. Short answer is 5/16” wide D-profile weather stripping fits the channel in the lid perfectly; easy to install and provides a very good seal. Thought I’d share in case you’re wanting to do the same. Be well Simon.
New sub. This vid I have been expecting, waiting, hoping for from all these camping channels. Yes I can pitch a tent. Yes I can start a fire with belly lint & earwax, yes I can forage & hunt food. BUT I’ve never been 💯 on unpacking, cleaning, storage of the precious gear and kit. Side note: 🤬 rodents. K9 Mum & love how you are with Ms Maggie❤️🌺 Massive respect and thank you for your thorough, concise perspective, knowledge-sharing to us “one day” campers and also scaredy-cat, no clue but love the call of nature wannabe campers. Love your style. Your content is massively informative and enjoyable to watch. Especially love how you roll with the punches/boo boos 🤩 Looking forward to your next instalment. Video suggestion: Coming home and unpacking, airing out, cleaning kit….please!!! I am yet to see a decamp/unpack/stow video which is probs more important for the next adventure. Thanks.
Wow, that's an impressive amount of kit! Nicely organised too.
Simon another great video. Some really useful tips. Now I can use this as evidence to the wife for my Big Shed. Stay safe.
A man and his shed - love it !!!
K9 Mum & love how you are with Ms Maggie❤️🌺
Massive respect and thank you for your thorough, concise perspective, knowledge-sharing to us “one day” campers and also scaredy-cat, no clue but love the call of nature wannabe campers.
Love your style. Your content is massively informative and enjoyable to watch. Especially love how you roll with the punches/boo boos 🤩
Looking forward to your next instalment.
Video suggestion: Coming home and unpacking, airing out, cleaning kit….please!!!
I am yet to see a decamp/unpack/stow video which is probs more important for the next adventure.
Thanks. Sorry to rant. It’s Saturday night here in New Zealand 🇳🇿 and watching content such as yours is my JAM!
Thank you for your channel and content.
Great video Simon. Wow you've got a lot of cool gear. Very well organized 😊👍✊🏕️
Ace....have total shed envy now!
Great vid. I’m planning on pruning most of gear. Life changes and health problems so hopefully others can enjoy the gear now.
Very well organized Simon!!! Well done!
Wow, that is a great setup! I have stuff I use a lot in a heap by the bed then everything else in a cupboard (fairly well organised, in my defence).
WOW. You have invested very wisely.
A dehumidifier can help, as can recharged sachets of silica gel from food packets! Anything to reduce the moisture is of benefit to storage.
Молодец, Simon, хорошее снаряжение и оборудование, благо Вы опытный путешественник и рукоделец надежный друг и товарищь любитель животных и природы, повар и хлебопекарь, молодец! 🧐🤨🤔🤭🤫👏👏👏🙏👍🤝✊👌✌
Brilliant video.
That is what I call organised - the way you've utilised the room to house your kit in & tidy & organised manor , is genius. !!! 👍
It's given me some ideas for altering my workshop area & for storage ideas.
Great Video Simon .. I'll look forward to the next one !
Greetings from Roquetas De Mar ( Almeria ) Spain
Re mice - we had one chew it's way into our tent through the bathtub groundsheet in the New Forest! We had put the food inside the tent hoping to prevent the mice getting to the food. I work up to hear chewing by my right ear!
Omg !! I just bought an expensive sleeping bag ( BIG AGNES side sleeper and stored it compressed) now I know how to store it properly. Thanks ..
Great info. Confirms what im doing right plus new info: sleeping bag storage, i will use. Enjoy your videos, keep them coming :) thx
