Elaine Paige and Tommy Korberg sing 'Mountain Duet' live in Stockholm, 1984.This was part of a televised concert promoting the album 'Chess' with the original LP's cast members.
Other videos are already on RUclips of 'Pity the Child' and 'Nobody's Side'.
Benny and Bjorn of ABBA are in the orchestra and play different roles, such as the piano, the accordion and the typewriters in 'Embassy Lament'. Barbara Dickson apparently took ill during the concert, and didn't sing her role in 'Endgame,' when Karin Glenmark (Anders Glenmark (the Arbiter's) wife), took over and stole the show.

I still think this is the most romantic, most sexy duet of any 'modern' musical. Tommy Korberg's voice melted my heart as a 19 year old, and nothing's really changed. Sumptuous harmonies.

The orchestration, the lyrics and the voices! So much better than the altered Broadway version. This is the real Chess. They are so good.

God, that was stunning. Elaine Paige is not my favorite vocalist, but the way she emotes with her voice is incredible.
Elaine has not the most beautiful voice. But she is maybe the best musical performer .male and female included.
i discovered chess at the end of the 1980s. i had shivers when i listened to this song then. and i still feel the same shivers after so many years. thank you, you beautiful people with your heavenly voices, for this enchanting experience.
Yes, the entire soundtrack is amazing. I bought it in the late 80s just to have "One Night In Bangkok", and found how it has intertwined with my life, esp the 90s when I had a torrid love circle!
back in the day, the radio overworked Bangkok, then I bought and listened to this show from start to finish...about a 1000 times. HA. One of the BEST musicals ever conceived and executed. bravo for this live capture. ty
Think about this a moment. 1979 Evita & Elaine Paige made front page news for its opening night. 1980s Chess had two of one of the greatest pop bands write chess, Michael Ball had prime time saturday evening shows, lloyd Webber became a household name, his girlfriend the same. Phantom & Les Mis are some of the biggest hits even now 30 years later. X Factor type shows start - name me a single west end star that has been in the charts since?

Every now and then I try to find a live recording of CHESS. Today I found this, but not after find the altered forms done in recent years... Those recent muse's ARE really good - but man, these guys utterly destroy the later attempts.... The emotional power just chokes me up even after 20 years of listening to them.... Wish I could go back in time to attend their live performance.... Amazing.
it's such a wonderful song.... breathtaking melodies, vocal harmonies everything. how can that song not be one of the best known musical songs of the last decades ? Chess should be reworked and redone to a proper stage show. With all the media interest in everything from B&B it should regain it's place as one of the best musical scores ever.

To those asking if this was really live - I believe the concert was recorded over a couple of nights. They took the best audio take and the best video take and mixed them together.

Also, does anyone else notice how it incorporates "Nobody's Side" as well as "Pity the Child" when Florence and Anatoly bring up Freddie? The musical references across the show to other songs are so well thought out!!

Chess was such a fascinating show. When I saw the original production I was very moved by the music. However, what infuriates me is the constant tinkering with the lyrics (not to mention the poor libretto!). I do wish we could have a revival of that original vision. It was so dazzling. The re-works are nothing like as powerful.

I was 9 when it first came out I'm now 46 and still love it, would literally give my right arm to have seen the original cast perform.

Given the singing is absolutely identical to the album, I’d say they are lip syncing. Look carefully at their mouths. Of course they are both superb singers but it was common practice at the time with so called live performances of recorded music.

If Tommy had sung that song to me, I would have jumped him right there. So masculine, confident, sexy and sensitive.
