    Go ask your Grandfathers if that's True, that's what the Leafs Announcer used to say !
    Leafs line was

      I agree. Ted Green used the stick as a weapon. The penalty, "spearing", is his legacy. Andy Bathgate wrote an expose for Sport Magazine about Green and spearing. Look at the photos of the Green/Maki stick fight in 1969: Green speared Maki in the throat causing Maki's vicious retaliation. Green should have been banned from hockey.

      @Kaempfer M good point. I read about some of the history of players back in the day and those guys grew up hard. poor, tough mining towns in Canada and alike. also I listened to an interview with tony Esposito years back and he was talking about some of the new rules and how players now a days have less respect for each other then they did. although they were hard on each other back then, there was still this respect. like terry orielly "taz" and chris nilan "knuckles" semi hugging after a long tough faught series. still a tough sport but no were near the wars in the arenas

      @Kaempfer M thank you for your comment. I think you can take it up to the 70's early 80's. I think what happened was they were so eager to commercialize the sport and place harsh rules we lost some of hockey. im not saying it all should be about fighting but just the rough stuff all together. watch closely an old game being refereed by bruce hood and see how many penalties would be called today. do me a favor search out derek sanderson on utube. the bruins and montreal 1970. and check that fight out. today some of those guys would be suspended for the rest of the year if not longer.

      @Kaempfer M thanks for your reply. most fights back then consisted of fists but it was not unusual for guys to hit with their sticks. a lot of guys were hurt pretty bad by that. Howe, Green. As far as that other stuff goes. It was not common, that I ever saw. today, its hard for me to watch an entire game. You got two refs just calling penalties for anything. Ive read comments on here "honey hockey" and other things. The game has sure changed. But when you watch the games on TV the arenas seem to be full. People are watching. Hockey is support to be a tough sport. People don't have to watch it and guys don't have to play it. There is always the ice capades LOL

      @Kaempfer M As far as these hockey players go? you never hear about players getting into trouble. even the goons you never heard about. some got into trouble with the law. substance abuse. fighting? I never heard of it. the great goon Robert Probert "probie" he worked with kids gave up some of his time. he did get into trouble with the law. Sanderson its really ashame.

    Fergusson was a mean spirited SOB who had some skill but devolved into a goon-provocateur,the prototype for guys like Ken Linesman. Shack was a free spirit with occasional fits of bad temper. He too could skate and score but he lacked the self control to stay out of fights he was egged into. Goofy yes, mean NO.

    • @graymalkin26
      @graymalkin26 Год назад +2

      Ferguson played 8 years and won 5 Stanley Cups, he also was runner up for the Calder Trophy and scored 29 goals one year. He never exceeded 186 PIM in a season. PIM denotes penalty minutes, I am indicating that due to your obtuse comment exhibiting your limited knowledge of hockey...Shack was an AH.

      @@graymalkin26 yes he was a jerk and on many occasions was just an instigator of chaotic and aggressive play versus high scoring teams (i.e. Canadians). He was an effective scorer and two-way player when he decided to avoid cheap penalties. In sum, Shack man was a man of multiple personality as a hockey player. 🤨🤔🥺
