They've talked about the next chapter of Band-Maid after their 10th anniversary, and they've leapt from looking cute in maid outfits to looking like they walked off an elegant fashion magazine shoot. Saiki had an idea of the off white for a clean blank slate to see how their colours evolve and what they become and to invite the audience along on that journey. That's a great metaphor.

The guitar riff was by Michael Einziger. Kanami said that she'd never come up with it by herself.
It is unusually straightforward with no twist for Miku's lyrics, but because of that, I felt Miku's sincere and strong feelings towards the members.
"Years from now I'll still be doing this with you" tears me up😥, and I truly hope they continue what they have done for many more years🙏

This is also the first MV to feature Saiki's new hairstyle. She's been wanting to cut it for years but she knew the fans liked it long. I think this was her compromise and it looks great.

The lyrics were written by Miku Kobato. By the the lyrics I think she wrote it about Band-Maid and the members as being family and best friends. Just my opinion..by the way They did a collaboration with Tony Visconti, David Bowie fame. The Dragon Cries they sing in English... 👍👍

This song can become timeless. For some reason I think about my grandparents. This song could have been played at their wedding, all they way to their 60th anniversary, and even after they had passed away. Who knows what the future holds for these ladies. Princess NittPicc, I'm so glad that you took the opportunity to react to this amazing video by the Maids. If this is what heaven looks and sounds like, I need to clean up my act! In my humble opinion, this video is both beautiful, IN SO MANY WAYS, and angelic. All the Maids look angelic, especially Kanami with her gossamer lace "wings". She does take us soaring into the heavens with her solo. I was wondering if you would make any comments about Miku and Saiki's hairdos. They're beautiful!!!!!! Some people may be turned off by their departure from a hard rock sound. Not Me! It just shows how talented and versatile they are. I think they can take ANY genre and give it their own signature sound.
Saiki got Kanami a prom dress and she's just absolutely beautiful. If you want to hear Kanami singing backup vocal, check out the acoustic versions of Puzzle and Anemone. As others have suggested, listen to Memorable and About Us.

This is a beautiful celebration of LOVE. This is a celebration of today. Because today is precious beyond measure. Because they'll be a day when there is no BandMaid. No tour bus trips or rehersal band camps. No more omanje time. All things pass. What they have created will remain. But their friendship will eventually end. And that is why this song is important. This is a testament to a place and time of magical creativity and deep friendship. BandMaid don't do shows they offer servings. How have BandMaid affected you? For me I was alone on Christmas when I watched their acoustic concert. It was grieving the death of my best friend, my aunt and my father. There had been riots in my neighborhood due to hate and injustice. My world had been turned upside down. Through the generosity of a youtube friend I was able to experience that concert. It was a point of hope and light to me.
My point is take this song for what it is. It is a beautiful celebration of friendship. A celebration of right now and a miracle of a band.
Money quote: "No bass line is safe when Misa is playing." :-) So glad you avoided learning about the song and video in advance, because seeing you react in real time to what makes this video and song diverge from a lot of their work was an absolute delight. You've got some serious pigeon wisdom, too, as you grokked many things in your first listen/watch that took me multiple passes to notice.

The song is about the trials and joy they've experienced in their past 10+ years together. Early in their career, they drove throughout Japan playing shows. They played over 400 live shows in 10 years, 8 if you count the pandemic. Sometimes in front of only a dozen or two in the audience. They really ground it out and so are really bonded together.

A truly great artist is always changing and showing off a different charm each time. For me, for example, Miles Davis or BAUHAUS, and now BAND-MAID.
The intricacy comes in waves in this song. It oscillates between more normal music and more normal Band-Maid. Like, if you just listen to Akane playing, parts of it seem like Akane could play it one handed, and then her normal style surges in, in the back half of the chorus.
OMD you have NOT seen Akane singing the second voice for Miku on Sayonakidori (almost acoustic) while all wearing early colours? Or when Kanami sang the second voice for Saiki on an acoustic live version of "Puzzle"? Oh, you have so much to look forward to, my friend. Bestie is one of the songs that rapidly has grown into the top-tier territories of Band-Maid. I am honestly surprised that Kanami's fluffy angel-wingy things did not start flapping and lifting her off the floor during that solo.
Live Kanami and Mikey chan play the opening together. When she plays her solo he gets down on one knee with bowed head and adores her. Totally appropriate.
The more Band-Maid you hear, the more it hits you that they can play anything. So many genres, so little time.

In order to get upset with them drifting away from their norm they would need to have a norm to drift away from. They have proven that they are capable of, and willing to do, anything. Always with grace and style. Even with the foreign DNA obvious in this song, it remains emphatically and beautifully a Band-Maid song.
The pace of Bestie isn't wildly different than About Us or Memorable, which were both love songs to their fandom. Those songs both had quite a bit of English as well. Miku talked about the band being best friends in her MC/omajinai time at Yokohama Arena. It was at PointFest about a year ago that Mike Einziger became their new bestie and that led them to open for Incubus in Tokyo on May 1, with Mikey-chan coming out to play along with them when Band-Maid did this song in the opener.
YES! It's a straight up Incubus song sung by Band-Maid. Reminds me of Dig or yes, even Wish You Were Here.

It became norm, that i need more time listening a new band-maid song, before i like it. It started with Unseen world for me.
NittPicc, did you catch how long Saiki held that note as Kanami tore into that solo? I think it was about 20 seconds long. Amazing! Many people have mentioned how good the mix was in this song. This is a bit of a departure from their normal, both in music, but also the outfits, but they are not afraid to try different things. The Conqueror album is an example of that. If you want to see/hear them take a step back from their usual intensity like in this video/song, check out one of their VERY few covers. "Dawn Winery Theme" is an instrumental song/video that was done for the Genshin Impact Anime that came out shortly before their 2022 US tour. I promise you will love it! The lyrics "I don't want to be shy but I can't look in your eyes" that morph into talking about years from now still "doing things with you" just immediately makes me think about an interview where Saiki speaks about meeting the other girls at first and how she was very shy and Akane kept her talking a lot. This song feels like a gift to each other.
I think it's them telling each other that they are friends forever. It may be the best thing they have received from the band coming together, lasting meaningful friendships.

It is a warm fireside glow on a cold night. A warm dish of soup when you need to feel some home comforts. I understand why some haven't warmed to it. But to me it is Band Maid. Mike Einzinger may have written the music but The Maids make it their own. Fandoms sometimes become protective about bands they admire and love. For me as always Band Maid make it special. Mikey San is a bestie of Band Maid. That is good enough for me.
Band Maid helped me get through the pandemic and for that, they will always have a place in my heart. It wasn't just their upbeat music, but the obvious friendship they had, that made what they did special. I can't say I will always like everything they create in the future, but I look forward to every new experience. I'm glad they have tried something new (costumes, music, whatever) and if they are happy with it, I'm happy to give it a try. I get those who want them to never change, but if they never did, eventually they couldn't help but get stale.

Really enjoyed your reaction, and totally agree this feels like them stepping out of their norm (if they have a norm) to try something new for the collab. The most impressive thing to me is it sounds like both an Incubus and a Band-Maid song. So often collabs lean hard one way or the other but they kind of nailed it. The overall riffs feel very Incubus, but Misa's bass line and Kanami's solo really come across as pure Band-Maid.

From what the Maids have said about the compositional process, "Mikey-san" came up with the riffage, but Band-Maid filled in everything else. Like you said NP, you can definitely hear the Maid's thumbprint in the layering, harmonies, and rhythm section lines. With those kinds of Band-Maid details, this song has definitely grown on me with repeated listenings.
Amazing reaction as always. The first time I heard this song, I was taken aback by how different it was from what I was expecting (that happens a lot with Band-Maid). After I watched the MV, I'm pretty sure this is a love song from each member of the band to the other members of the band. Truly "Girl Power". Awesome!

You should checkout Sayonakidori, the acoustic version. Sung by Miku, playing acoustic guitar, MISA, and Akani, who also sings backup vocals! No Kanami or Saiki.

You should check out Incubus' old works from their first 2 albums for a vastly different sound from them. Nebula, Calgon, Take me to your leader, Shaft are way more metal-ish.
The song, Dragon Cries, which has a MV (hint), is also in English. It was produced by Tony Visconti of David Bowie fame. Saiki and Miku came to the US to work with him on the vocals. While Bestie has a bit of gunge feel, Dragon Cries reminds me of classic rock. Kanami is channeling her inner Hendrix.
Yes, they can all sing. Kanami was a singer/songwriter before Band-Maid. They have done some duets with Saiki and Kanami on acoustic guitar and doing backing vocals. They all show Kanami's genius at arranging and adapting hard rock songs as minimal acoustic duets. Misa and Akane can be heard on Miku's acoustic version of Sayonakidori. Both have said they don't like to because they'd rather focus on playing.
My utmost respect to Saiki for singing the whole in english. Easily my favorite new song now. Those 5 princesses will forever be Bestie

A cool part of those 2 note stabs that Kanami uses near the beginning of the solo, is she repeats it 18 times or four and half bars, then a quarter note rest before proceeding with the rest of the solo. Most players would change at the 4 bar mark. Not Kanami! Akane's stuttering fill after the solo is also epic.

I want to believe that this song could be about the relationship between them and the fans, but also could be about the relationship between the girls themselves
So, maybe it's just my headcanon, but like I said below their MV, between the words of Miku and the voice of Saiki, I can't help to think that Miku wrote it thinking of Saiki, Saiki sing it thinking about Miku, and I found it more powerful and beautiful (but I'm maybe delusional lol).

Yes, MISA's bass line is very beautiful. Just like Mincho played a counter solo at the end of Blooming, MISA took a counter melody for this song. It's very difficult to do that without interfering with the vocals. This is band maid!
I was yearning for more-maid harmony after hearing Kanami, Akane, and even Misa, sing backing on Christmas acoustic concert songs.... and then ... they all sang (on mic) the Christmas acoustic closer Endless Story which made it even more beautiful than its touching rearrangement. If the stars align maybe they'll bust out a couple of bars of 3, 4, or 5-part vocal harmony in one of their gorgeous almost-acapella breaks...

Don't worry about the hard rock, Kanami has already stated that she has written a new song where Akane will have a lot of trouble playing the drums. And one more song where Miku will have a solo.
You summed up how we feel about this song very well. There are those who are for and those who are against there being less complexity on their part in Bestie. I would say that they have the capacity and the intelligence to capture a vibe which is not usual to their music but which they assimilate to adapt it to their taste and make it a sort of musical hybrid between Incubus and Band -Maid. It's a tour de force. This is all new to me and I thought at first that I would place this song among the good ones and not among the best ballads. But after several listens, I'm not so sure. It's funny, I've seen some negative comments about this song on the fan boards---mostly because it's a departure from their "usual" style. As you said, some people don't like it when their favorite artists change anything up. I happen to agree with you, this is gorgeous. And the video is gorgeous too.
On the song 'Freedom' they all sing. Even Misa is 🎤 up and there is a part where you see her sing BV's. Akane does BV's 'Sayanakadori' (great harmonies) on the acoustic version. Kanami sings BVs on many of the songs ( sometimes) lol She's had voice training and it shows. She has a beautiful voice. They all can sing and harmonize 😊

Cool collaboration, don't know Incubus but sure I've head them. At first, from a few weeks ago I was luke warm on this song, but since this video can out I'm in LOVE with it, as I am many Band-Maid Music videos.

You mentioned the outfits several times. This isn't the first time they have done the "no maids" style. When they did the acoustic show, it was close to this. Very flowwy/baggy. With Saiki doing the design work for that set as well.
