Montalo, when I first heard this guy back in 1980 I thought now there's a guitar sound that's totally original and indeed one you'll not forget , and I never have ! It's brutal but also very warm and well you just know it's him. My man. Also there was a quality of songwriting on the 80's stuff quite unique at that time of blood 'n' guts and general mayhem. I still yearn for Steve-o though.
Montalo plays in standard tuning (E) but still has that doomy sound going on like let's say Black Sabbath.( who even played in C sharp to make it more doomy-sounding). He's got a biting overdrive with lots of mids (800 Hz & 1,60 Khz pushed) to obtain a full & warm sound for soloing. I love his tone because he gets the best of both worlds: an agressive rhythm sound plus thick solos à la Brian May . No one sounds quite like him !
